| Jam_Warrior11-11-06, 07:30 AM | Hi guys, after a bit of advice. My girlfriend and I are currently really enjoying our first D&D campaign. I figured an expansion book which would help out her character (Neutral-Good Elf Ranger) would be a great Christmas present idea, however as a relative new comer to D&D the vast array of supplements overwhelms me! I'm looking for something quite general with a ranger focus. 'Masters of the Wild' seems the obvious choice but any other suggestions? Campaign is 3.5 Eberron by the way. Thanks for any help :) |
| Mesraic11-11-06, 07:46 AM | not masters of the wild as i believe its 3.0 try to get something like complete warrior, or races of the wild. those are pretty good for either ranger or elf. |
| Jam_Warrior11-11-06, 08:55 AM | Dang, I wish there was clear way of telling in the listings what version a book is for. I worry that the complete warrior might focus too much on melee when she's an archer. Is this the case? |
| Wall11-11-06, 09:29 AM | Masters of the Wild isn't actually too bad for a 3.0 book. About half the stuff in it was never updated, so I wouldn't call it a waste of money. Otherwise, I agree with Races of the Wild, and would like to throw in Complete Adventurer as an option. Complete Adventurer has a fair amount of nature-focused stuff (prestige classes and the like) as well as a variety of feats that are nice for the archers and wilderness types. Also a good book for rogues and bards. |
| Benedictus11-11-06, 09:46 AM | Complete Adventurer is good choice for a ranger. Highlights of what makes it suitable? The Scout class in case she wants to try multiclassing. Animal Lord, Beastmaster, Bloodhound, Highland Stalker, and Tempest prestige classes. Some appropriate feats as well, though I won't recmmeond that you get the book for them. Same goes for the magic items. But this book has 13 new spells for rangers and that is just the first level spells. Add six 2nd level, and 2 each for the higher levels. I want to particularly suggest Branch to Branch as a 1st level offering. Play a woodland campaign with a ranger and this spell is lot's of fun. +10 Climb bonus? It would be good for a 1st level spell but the spell does much more in a forest. Not only can you move through the trees of a medium or denser forest but you get a bonus to your normal speed while doing so and the spell lasts 10 minutes per level. Forest floors are rough terrain which slows most people to half speed. High Ground bonus of +1 to attacks are the least of the benefits for taking to the trees with this spell. There are several other great ranger spells on the list. Check it out at least. |
