So Hon 11-26-05, 11:56 PM	I'm a 46 yr old woman and love D&D!!! My husband and I live in Cheyenne, WY. I don't know of anyone around here who plays. I started playing the game after I joined the Air Force and learned of the game. We played the game once a week from 6 pm until 10 pm, and sometimes on Sat's. But as we've moved, we ran out of people that played. I just found this web site and thought I'd cast out the question of what age most of ya'll are that play the game. So Hon Ranger
Eerongal 11-27-05, 12:37 AM	Ironically, i was just talking to a friend of mine earlier today, who works at and runs a gaming shop, and he told me that people in the armed forces make up a very large portion of his sales, he said he's always shipping stuff to some army base or naval base or something. Anyways, on topic, I'm 21 and ive played since i was about 8, my dad used to play years ago, and a friend of his had a son in college, and he always let me play, back in the ol' 2.0 days. I still play 3.5 to this day, and it never seems to get old :P

Me and another player each had all of our clothes burned off by a dragon's breath weapon. We just picked up some loot and ran butt-naked out of there. The other two players decided to fight each other ignoring the dragon. :rolleyes: Though, I don't really count that since I didn't start to play activly until 3e came out.

WhtKnt 11-27-05, 11:10 AM	I turned 39 just today, making me the oldest member of my group (aged 25-38). I've been playing since I was 12, when I taught myself the rules. My newbie player is just learning the game at age 27. My sister, who occasionally plays, is 27 and has been in the game since she was about 15. My father is 64 and still joins us for a game on occasion (when I'm in his neighborhood). He's been playing since he was 37. My brother doesn't actively play any more (his wife and new daughter make finding time difficult), but he's been playing since he was 9 years old (about 27 years). My wife also has trouble finding time to play anymore, but still joins us once in a while. She is 36 years old, and has been playing since she was 14. The oldest player I've ever had in a group was in his late 70s. He'd been playing since the game started in 1974. That means he started in his 60s.

Many a man his life hath sold, If you're looking for a way to play D&D online through a chat or some other similar interface, my recommendation is to check out this (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=347) portion of the boards and search for games in the online category. There are a number of them always starting up and they're linked alphabetically, so shouldn't be too hard to find someone to game with. But my outside to behold, As for me: story time. Lets see, been at this a while. Maybe since I was 13-14. First actually started with something that wasn't in fact D&D. Was out camping with a bunch of friends and we had heard about "roleplaying" and decided it sounded like something fun to do to kill time around the fire, ect... Picked out a friend who was fairly creative and just had him come up with puzzles, "adventures", and other interesting stuff for us as our alter-egos to do. Naturally this was mixed in with a bit of the childhood imagination thing, as we could have almost been called LARPers with how we got into it. We'd flip coins to decided success, and generally had a great time of it for the few days we were out. Once we got back, we figured we'd had such a good time doing that we might as well continue at home and maybe find a set of rules that were a little more comprehensive, so we wouldn't just end up flipping coins for everything we did (maybe have skill *gasp*). Through a friend heard about D&D (1st Ed. if I remember, might have actually been 2nd and backtracked to play 1st.). With about 7-8 of us on a rotating basis we started playing every weekend and sometimes during the week. Did that until got into college, at which point some of my friends went to the same one, and we continued our weekly games. During this period, also naturally broadened out and tried other options for RP and looked into WEG Star Wars, Shadowrun, GURPS, Vamp. the Masq, Rifts, Feng Shui, bunch of other one offs, and eventually the whole d20 line. Also found a few other groups to play with, and for a point was doing about 3-4 games a week. Got a little crazy at a point, as I was DMing two, and playing in the others, but eventually calmed down as classes took over, work picked up, or folks moved away. As I finished out my undergrad, most of my original group except for one had been left behind, and there was a whole new crowd. Was only in on one to two games a week at this point, and kept up with DMing a decent bit in general. This continued through Masters land, but when I decided that I wanted to get a PhD, suddenly I was faced with a bad choice. One of my best offers was in another country, and although D&D didn't factor very heavily into whether I was actually going to take the offer ;), it was still a difficult thing to part with in my leaving. Anyhow, now I'm sitting over here (here being my location /\) with no gaming and a desired to write (damn WotC design test getting my hopes up, time to make another submission) Gilded tombs do worms enfold Man, I feel old and I'm not. Anyhow, as a final answer to the question, I'm a grand ol' 26. Been player and DM/GM more times than I can count on either end. Groups have ranged from 8 to nearly 80, with the mean generally being near my age at the time +-5. Lots of good and bad on both ends, but still enjoy the hobby immensely.

Besides, does it really matter how old you are? The only thing that really matters is how good you roleplay, not your seniority in the group. I know fourteen-yearolds that are better roleplayers than a few of our over-the-hill players.
I_Strahd 11-27-05, 01:21 PM	i started to play when i was in my thirteenth winter. i could of said when i was thirteen but this is nerdier. my older sister use to play with her friends and than talk about it at home. so the rebel i was decided to get some people together and play. i asked about 12 people in my grade and only got beat up once. but i got 5 others to play with me. then that one person who beat me up got a 6 pk. of woop ass from us. revenge is sweet. so in short around thirteen.

I didn't even start D&D till 20 or so, though I played a MUD since I was 16, and text-based adventure games (anyone remember Huge Cave or Stranded or any of Hugo's adventures?) since I was 5 (my Dad's a computer programmer. Always had a comp in the house ;) ) Well, I take that back, I played the D&D board game really really young.

So far, I ran a couple of short campaigns. I'm still playing with my original party, with my original character... The players I play with currently, range in age from 15 to 35.

shadowrisae 11-27-05, 04:42 PM	I'm 22 and I mostly DM. I have had (serious) players between the ages of 12 and somewhere-in-their-mid-to-late-40's. I have had a 6 year old play, but he wanted to be the 12 year old's familiar (a cat - I allowed the cat to be able to talk so he could have fun with it). I mostly play with people older than myself though, between 25 and 40's. And since the original poster mentioned Air Force, my last long campaign had 5 players; 2 of them civilians, 1 US Army, and 2 US Navy. Also at least half of my book collection came from a different US Navy guy that didn't have time to play D&D so sold his books to me for super cheap. I've been amazed to find out how much of the military folks play D&D. :)
Zevox 11-27-05, 05:24 PM	I'm currently 18, and just started playing both D&D and minis about a year ago now. The events that led to my playing, however, started back when I was 14, when as a High School freshman first read Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion, which led to my interest in fantasy books, which led to my reading R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels, which got me reading other FR novels... which eventually got me interested in D&D :) . As is, I play only when my limited time between my College classes (which give a lot of homework - I've two honors classes) and my part-time job permits, which isn't often. I've both been a DM and a player for short one-sit-down games, and have been trying to DM a decent full-size campaign, though we play so infrequently its become hard for the players to remember what we did last session (largely the fault of my schedule :embarrass), so we may switch back to one-shot games. You may be right, and I have no statistical data to back me up on this, but my experience in the upper-midwest (think Northwest Territory land) has been that you can't swing a stick without hitting someone who plays or has played an RPG. And most high schools and colleges have some kind of gamer group, formal or otherwise. My sense has always been that this area is the heartland of roleplaying, but maybe the numbers don't bear me out on that. (anymore?).

Were you living in a college town? We tend to congregate near learning institutions because we're smarter than everyone else and will soon be their masters. *cough* I was looking, but I couldn't find any real data either. I was really disappointed. I'd love to assemble a population density map of US gamers. I'm sorry gentlemen, but Canada will have to wait.

Illion the Red 11-28-05, 09:52 AM	Started with the boxed version circa 1980...been at it ever since. I'm thirty-something, and frankly, too lazy to do the math to figure it out anymore. My group is largely populated with similarly aged players, with one exception...the 16-year-old "kid." He was the real question mark going into the game, but he's certainly not the question mark at this point - proved himself to be a good roleplayer and mature enough to keep up with the geezer league.

kaeso 11-28-05, 12:23 PM	I started roleplaying when I was 7, when the crazy kid down the street was always making up games for us to play (crazy kid: "what do you do?" me: "I run at the monster and kick him in the chest!" crazy kid: "The monster's chest opens up, revealing a bright light. The light grows brighter..." *me and other little kids gasp*), and then at summer camp one year my friends were telling me about Shadowrun. I was about 12, so I went to the hobby store and bought it. I read through a lot of it and did't understand a word, and my interests in roleplaying games fell away. A few years later at summer camp, one of my friends brought his D&D PHB and MM. We made characters, but he didn't have dice or anything so he generally made stuff up. (me: "I hit him with my sword!" DM: "You deal no damage" me: "WHAT?! why not?" DM: "Becuase I said so.") When I got back from summer camp I decided that I really wanted play, so I bought a player's handbook (V.3.0) and a MM (V.3.5... I didn't understand there were different versions.). Now, lots of books later, I'm trying to get a group together. I'm 17 now, but I play on playing D&D for a very long time.
rbrt_Spade 11-28-05, 01:36 PM	Played since age 13. I was at a friends house and saw 2 adults playing. I asked whats that?-dnd. I then asking My aunt(i live with) to get dnd for me. She got the diablo 2 boxed set. Learned off of that. Then many things started to go together. I got the lotr books in fifth grade and got into fantasy. Then i started reading dragonlance & fr. Also my aunt played up in Pittsburg with 1e. She told me about when she played. But before that, she played baldurs gate and got me into many things-computer rpgs. In the present now... I say thanks to my aunt who got me into it, lotr,and those guys who were playing. Now I have 150+ fantasy books, play dnd, and a huge fan of zelda- link to the past for snes, zelda 64, baldurs gate 1&2, never winter nights, Icewindale, dungeon seige, and diablo. Looks upon diablo 3, nwn 2, and bga3 with *glee*. Now sixteen and dm/play. The scary thing that is my mom reads fantasy & playes the listed games. :P Thank you guys for bringing back the good times. :)

Because all of our friends who played scattered to the four winds, my husband and I play online using OpenRPG (www.openrpg.com). We've been playing online for about 5 years now and love it; we've played with all ages and all nationalities, although we typically require a minimum age of 18 because of the mature themes that often crop up in the campaigns my husband runs.
Bruunwald 11-28-05, 02:39 PM	I'll be 36 on New Year's Eve, my wife will turn 30 a couple weeks after. I started playing when I was 11. The people we play with range from 21 to about 38. The lady who owns the local hobby shop is an avid gamer at about 45-ish. My son loves all minis and my terrains and grids but doesn't play yet (he's 5). I recently got my (just turned 63!) 62-year-old stepdad, 52-year-old mom and their 52-year-old friend (my auntie, as I've known her since I was born) to play for a whole weekend while they were visiting. We had a great time! So that makes our group and its associates loosely 5 to 63. ;)

The OP was allowing us to flourish all as we are, and to show off how diverse we all are. We are many. We are legion. But in the good way.

Started playing in 1974. I was 8 years old. My uncle had a pre-release version of the game they played at Cal Tech. When the game came out, I got a copy for my birthday. jericho23 11-28-05, 03:49 PM	This is the first time I have actively pursued D&D. My wife hates it but I have always read Forgotten realms, dragonlance, greyhawk, and I love JRR Tolkein. I have never created a character (officially) and I have no idea where to start. I have downloaded the .pdf files for player creation on this website, and that is as far as I have gotten. Oh, I'm 25 by the way and this website is wonderful. Hope to get to know some of you..............

(I'm not sure if I should want to run from the word 'decade' or not.) I sometimes wish that I'd started sooner, but today I find myself wondering if that would have been the best thing. It appears that I found gaming at an optimal time in my life.
DragonDeadite 11-28-05, 04:16 PM	I'm 22(23 in a couple more weeks) and got introduced to it when I was about 8 or 9 years old thanks to my parents(mainly mother) but had been around the game pretty much since I was born because they played while the DM's daughter watched up to make a few bucks. Since I couldn't get much of a game together me and my mother used to play (ready for this?) Hero Quest!! I ran a group for a little while in HS then fell out of it till 3.0 came out, got into a group then 3.5 came out and I've been playing pretty steadily ever since. Wrote my first game as a DM when I was about 12 for a few middle school kids I was hanging out with. Brought in all the stuff for a Game Day (those days where it's a half day before a holiday and the teachers just don't want to do anything) and ran through the full adventure. Ran across it the other day and think with a few adaptions I could still use it! My groups: I DM: 16(sister) to 29(CJ, good friend!) I PC: 22(Me) to mid 40s (everyone else)

Started playing D&D at the age of 13, before that I had only played computer RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Diablo, but found the 3rd editions in a bookstore not far from where I live. Read the rules tried to play a bit, soon the the Wheel of Time RPG was released by Wizards and me and some friends started to play it with me as a DM since I had read most of the rules. Switched then over to 3.5 a bit later. Now I have 3 gaming groups, but will have to quit in two of them scine I have to go to the military. We still have the gaming group we started with, and one more have joined, 5 guys (including me) now 17 to 20 years. Two of them are less active now due to work and the military. Started a new campaign last weekend (Dungeons Age of Worms), with this group and adding 3 more members so now the youngest is about 12-13 I think and the oldest 20. In my second group I'm the youngest (18) with one about 20 and the rest in their 20s and early 30s(?). We had a session today and my halfling rouge died :eek: In my third group the youngest is 17 and the oldest in his 30s, he's been playing since the first D&D boxedsets came out... Have played with people about 9-10 years old to people in their 40s before
Memnoch138 11-28-05, 06:33 PM	I've been playing since I was about 9 or so and I'm 29 now. I just started up again about 2 years ago after a break for a good 10 years. I play with a group where we're all about the same age and have all known each other (for the most part) for quite a long time. I can honestly say I look forward to it every week more than anything else i do. Good friends, lots of laughs, a night out of the house. How can you go wrong? I really didn't realize how much I missed playing over the last 10 years until I started again. The best part is when I asked everyone if they would be into it I expected to get some mixed feelings. We literally can't keep people out of the group!!! The more people find out we play, the more try to get in on the action.
tchacotaa 11-28-05, 09:14 PM	I started in Feb of 79. I was 11. (I turned 38 on Oct 30) So I have been playing for 27 years in upcoming Feb. I still have all my original 1st ed core rule books. That I bought in 79 and 80. I started a steady group 13 years ago when i bought my house. It is the first place I had available with plenty of room besides my parants house. I moved away from there 20 years ago. Part of the reason I bought this house was that it offered a great gaming room. I introduced my wife to gaming when i met her. We have been together for over 17 years. She has not played for the last 5 years though. My Daughter is 15. She has played with us on and off since she was 6 years old. A great natural roleplayer. I have been the Primary DM for the last 6 years. I have only had a chance to play when one of my players is running Star Wars. I get a little burned out from time to time with work and what not. I have my own campaign that I run. All the players contribute to the world. This is my main hobby. Other things I do: my wife is a photographer, so we go hiking all over the place for her hobby. I ride motorcycles, and have been a member of two differant clubs, the last of which i was involved with for 5 years. As for military, I live about 40 miles from Fort Bragg in Fayetteville NC. The Game store there has a huge milatary customer base. And the nicest people own the store.

I'll be 16 on january first, and i've been playing since i was 10 or so. My whole used to go to high school together before i got sent to private school, so we are all 14-16. Our DM is my father, who is 46 and has been playing since college. I am slowly teaching him to play 3rd edition.
Stardrake 11-28-05, 10:43 PM	I'm 48, been playing since 1974 (first game was a demo of this new game at the local wargames shop--run by Dave Arneson in Castle Blackmoor, no less!). Actually left D&D in the early 80's for RuneQuest and then many other games--came back to D&D with 3.0, when they finally fixed much of the stuff I couldn't stand. And remember, D&D was INVENTED in the North Central US--Gary Gygax in Lake Geneva, WI, and Dave Arneson in Minneapolis, MN. The Twin Cities in particular are swarming with gamers. (And even 2 game companies--Atlas Games and Fantasy Flight Games.) All your games are belong to us..... :D
Lord Mhoram 11-28-05, 10:55 PM	Turn 39 in January. Been playing since '78 or so. I left D&D in general when 2nd ed came out (still played some seriously houseruled 1st ed after that). In 1985 HERO became my primary system. I came back to D&D when 3rd Ed came out. HERO is still my primary, but I play D&D solo with the wife weekly.
So Hon 11-28-05, 11:13 PM	Wow, thanks ya'll for the wonderful response to my question! I've enjoyed reading what everyone has written. I love to read fantasy books, besides fairytales when I was a kid, the first fantasy book I read was Quag Keep by Andre Norton. It was excellent! I've read books by R.A. Salvatore, Tad Williams, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, The Lord of the Rings, etc. My main/favorite character is a human male, So Hon, Ranger. I don't remember his level at this time. I still have my original character sheets. The reason I mentioned age, was because I wondered if anyone my age still played! I reckon I need to place a flyer out at Laramie Community College and maybe place an ad in the local paper to see if there are any players out there. We don't have a hobby shop here. Fort Collins, in Colorado is really the next biggest college town. Keep sending in your stories, they are great!!!! So Hon Ranger
Wharin 11-28-05, 11:17 PM	25 going on 15. I too actually got started on HeroQuest. And, not happy with the simplicity of it, essentially turned it into a Roleplaying game of sorts, adding in what we thought was "good roleplaying". I suppose at 7th/8th grade one should expect Shakespeare. Heh. Then one of us got access to, and decided to share with us what I assume was 2nd edition AD&D. We played a campaign or two of that. Then came the whole Goth phase shared by many in our clique (present company excluded), and combined with our Schools ban of D&D, White Wolf's Vampire and Werewolf settings were the next step. After that, our GM created his own Gaming system not wholly unlike d20, and that was playtested for a few years And then came 3.0 and our lives were never the same again...

Brother and I learned the game together, and are now teaching my 11 yr old and my 7 year old to play. As a side note, I have seen my 7 year old play a wizard better then most of the 20+ yr olds I have played the game with. He knows already to stand back, cast protection spells on himself before combats, and use enhance spells on the others in the party. **Head swells with pride**
