Each race has three threshold ages, which mark off different age categories. There's the normal starting age, and then they advance through Middle Age to Old Age, and finally to Venerable. When a PC hits Venerable, the DM rolls as indicated on the age table to determine his maximum age. Regardless of race, when you hit Middle Age, you suffer a -1 decrease to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution, but a +1 increase to Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. This is sort of like the increase every 4 hit dice, in that it actually adjusts the score in question. Hitting Old Age makes you suffer an additional -2 STR, DEX, CON, but an additional +1 INT, WIS, and CHA. Venerable, as you'd expect from this pattern, is an extra -3 STR/DEX/CON, +1 INT/WIS/CHA. A venerable character has decreased his physical scores by 6 and increased his mental scores by 3, due to aging. I'll assume you're a human. Middle Age for a human is 35, Old Age is 53, and Venerable is 70 (rolling 2d20 and adding that to 70 to determine the maximum age). If your character is human, he is Middle Age, and thus should have physical scores 1 point lower, and mental scores 1 point higher.
