What d'ya all think about the concept of the Airship ? My Elven wizard recently(well 1 year ago, and that is real life time, mind you) acquired an Airship. I took that decision after seeing the Zeppelin in the Arms & Equipement book. So whats your opinion on this guys ?

the concept of airships in dnd? in a high magic setting, i think it fits nicely. to me, a real life airship has a "magical" feel to me. compared to, say, a regular airplane. maybe because i've never ridden in an airship. maybe because they seem so huge and because they're so cool to look at from the ground when you're a kid. anyway, they seem cool to me.

If by Magic-setting you meant the FR, then yes. Mine is currently ''anchored'' to the top of my tower, in a small town near the capital of Cormyr, Suzail. We named our town ''Coruscent'', I just love SW ! *Darth-Vader breathing sound*

Be carefull, Cormyr has strict laws about flying ships, and any ship sailing the sky of Cormyr without license will be shoot down by griffon mounted war wizards or Cormyr's own spelljammer fleet.

Can't remember where it's told about this, but it's either "Four from Cormyr" or "Volos' Guide to Cormyr"

I really like the idea for airships in D&D, magical that is. I borrowed ideas from (the best anime show) Esclaflowne. The airships in that show had rocks that were able to float, and the airhsips had some engine type thing that can depress the floating rocks "float power" and also make it able to float higher.

I used that idea IMC, the rock gnomes discovered the floating rocks and built a floating kingdom and of cource airships. They use a magical device to power magic into the float rock to make it float higher, while it also can take away the magic to make the rock float lower. So in a sense I stole Escaflowne's idea. :D

That is not a problem, I will handle Cormyr' army on my own if I need to. Heck, what they can possibly do against a Frenzied Berserker who have over more then 35 his STR ability, and a Prismatic Dragon ?

'Sides, I got this useful spell, y'know, I believe its name is wish.

What ever floats your boat (no pun intended). I never really liked the thought of adding them to D&D but many other d20 settings enjoy them.

I love airships! I based an entire planar campaign based on one that could plane shift. It was huge fun.

I couldn't find any books that had rules for airships in them, so I came up with this, which I posted awhile back. I used the rules in the DMG to come up with the costs.

I introduced a new magic item called the Lift Drive. It can be fitted to anything large size or larger. I used the rules in the DMG for coming up with it, and my players build ships with the Seafarer's Handbook (an awesome book, not by WotC, don't own it but one of my players does). The book has complete and comrehensive rules for building your own ship. Then they fit the Lift Drive to it (most ships require several). Here's the item.

Lift Drive: This large crystal engine is poweed by magic, boosting the power of a levitation spell to a level capable of handling the weight of an airship. Actual propulsion still relies on the traditional method that has been in use for millennia -- heavy cloth sails. The Lift Drive merely allows the ship it is fitted to to sail through the air. It comes in four variants -- Standard, Compact, Standard (Self Driven), and Compact (Self Driven). All Drives weigh 100 lbs.

The Standard Drive can contribute only 300 lbs to the lift of the vehicle, and requires a standard action every three minutes to keep it running. It is the cheapest, however, as it costs only 10,000 gp. It is most often used on ships of the line, which need to be cheap for mass production.

The Compact Drive can contribute 1050 lbs to the lift of the vehicle, and also requires a standard action every three minutes to keep it running. It is considerably more expensive, but the added power is considered worth it aboard smaller ships that can't afford to give up the space that four Standard Drives would require to equal the power. The Compact Drive costs 44,000 gp.

Self Driven Drives provide the same amount of power as their normal counterparts, but require a standard action only every 24 hours, freeing up time. These drives are extremely costly, but are favored by single crew craft, or ships that can't afford to divert personel to maintaining engine power. A Standard (Self Driven) Drive costs 132,000 gp. A Compact (Self Driven) Drive costs 240,000 gp.

I like your mechanic. If you want a good book on airship construction and rules, there's one by Bastion Press called, well, Airships that's really good. It's one of the only non-WotC books I use on a regular basis.

If you're thinking about using airships, I highly encourage you to take a good look at Airships from Bastion Press. I think you will find it fits into any high fantasy setting, including Eberron, quite well.

Yay airships! What ISN'T magical about them?

*Summons airship plushie, hugs it*

No, I'm not obsessed or crazy.

IMC, airships are essentially aircraft carriers for griffon knights.

So the title of this non-wizard produt is Airship ?

If you wish to play with airships may a suggest an old FASA game that has been picked up by another gaming company. I won't bring up the name, because I'm sure wizards would be super ******, expessaly since they stole alot of the ideas from 3.x from it, so I won't. But I'm sure with google a creative man can figure it out. It's simply the best game out there if you wanna play with air ships.
