Most of you will remember the exploits of Log, the Timberrogue from our old boards.

For those who need a refresher I'll give you a briefing before I post his latest exploits.

Our party (Cleric, wizard, paladin, ranger) was about to enter the Return to The Temple of Elemental Evil without a rogue.

We were worried about traps.

Until my Ranger had a brilliant idea: The Timberrogue!

The concept was simple. Cut down a tree a good two or three feet thick. Cut out a five-foot long log from it. Cut hand-holds on the side and cut one end to a point.

Now, take said log and roll it in front of the party down suspect hallways. The log sets off any traps well away from the party. On upward slopes or rough floors you might want to employ a pole to push it with.

When you come to a locked or possibly trapped door you have the burliest party member pick up the lof and give it a good hurl through the door. It should weigh a couple hundred pounds so it'll make short work of the door. Same applies to chests. If you want you could probably pick pockets too...as long you don;t care too much about the victim.

A simple tool, a brilliant plan.

But somehow it has become a member of the party!

We started referring to it as "The Rogue". "The rogue will check for traps in the corridor ahead of us." "The Rogue will unlock the door." etc.

Eventually it got to where my Ranger (who has the 'throw anything' feat) would pick him up and shout "SNEAK ATTACK!" and hurl the errant log towards unsuspecting foes.

At one point our paladin preyed to his god to help him smite an evil cleric. He rolled a 1% so the DM rewarded him by having the log suddenly fly up and smite the cleric on its own. But this broke the log and our oarty was griefstricken...especially the ranger, cleric and wizard who, not being privy to the prayer, assumed that it was an act of LOG that did that, and not the divine intervention of the paladin's god.

We quickly repaired him, using mending spells and the like. The log had given its life to save us, only to rise again from the proverbial ashes.

The GM was having a blast with it so he ruled that the touch of god made the log a +1 Holy weapon.

Now my Ranger, who now sees himself as a divine deciple of the Log, has the honor of bearing the log into combat. The first round of every combat now begins with my ranger shouting "SNEAK ATTACK!!" Or (depending on my mood or the nature of the targets) "HOLY SMITE!!" and hurling the, now blessed, log into the enemy.

He's getting good at it. Sometimes he can hit two or three people if they're standing close to one another.

Recently we found this creepy evil altar with a creepy multi-sided pillar.

We decided to use the Log to help us deface and purify the altar. So I picked it up and started smashing the pilar. Low and hebold each side contained a (now smashed open) secret compartment "The log found a secret pannel and disarmed the trap" (in other words, the thing was smashed in and the log set the trap off)

We found incense, a prayer bead, a dru and somethng else. Well, we used them and an evil elemental eyue dealie appeared over the altar. It inflicted temporary levle loss on a couple party members and paralyzed one. The Paladin, who made his save, took up the Log from my injured Ranger and roared a dedication to his deity as he charged the eye.

He smote the eye with the log and saved the day!
When it was all over the party rushed to the smoking log and the injured paladin (there was an explosion that threw him against the wall) and we took up our fallen comrade and raised him up and declared "The Log has saved us! In Log we Trust!"

The paladin was too injured to join in the log-hoist but once the excitement died down the cleric patched him up and we asked him what it was like to be that near to the log when he performed his miracle.

Well...that's the latest exploit of The Log...those of you who already share in the glory of the log, feel free to re-post your experiences from the old boards over here. Or bring in new ones.

You need to put blades on the top and bottom of the log. Makes a nice effect.

Ah, nice to see the Log still has its fans...

One: Blades would be nice, but there's two problems with that. The first problem is that rolling across stone floors would wquickly bend, break or dull the blades.
The second problem is that the beauty of the log is that it's heavy and relatively unoform. The weight is spread otu to maximum effect. If it;s up on blades then the weight is put just on those small points. Which means it's apt to miss presure plates and the like.

But, perhaps a purpose-buoilt Combat Log would be wise...

SputnikCorp: The problem with chickens is that they;re too light and they tend to wander. You can;t trust one to do down a corridor and set off a trap. IT might just turn around, It miught miss the trigger. Or it mighr be too light to set them off.

The pig is a better idea because it's bigger and more apt to go pne direction.

But the problem with both is that they generally only work once. Then you've got lunch meat. Logs are durrable. Decent hardness, all the nice immunities of an inanimate object, and being a couple feet thick it's bound to have a ton of HP. You could even make it steel shod or studded with nails for extra toughness.

And...once your Mage gets up to the right level you can start enchanting the log or even make it an animated object.

Shovel Warrior: Hummm....I like that idea.

But what do you think is better?

It seems to me the timberrogue has died numerous times. Obviously, his AC is too low. He needs armor!

Option 1: Pay a druid to permanently enchant Log with ironwood.
Option 2: Iron-shod log! (Banded armor!)
Option 3: Leather armor. This is best, since rogues naturally wear leather armor due to the lack of an armor check penalty. This will prevent the armor from interfering with his disable device and open lock checks.

Oh...
Foundations = bad!
Cults = good!

First of all, Timberrogue is only useful for a certain type of trap, in part because rolling on the floor makes him kind of ... well short.

One nasty type trap, is a hallway. On one of the hallway, oddly enough where you are, is a small monster. (goblin, kobold, dwarf) The monster sees you looks scared and runs down the hallway to the other side.

What does the party do? Give chase of course! In the process they run into the half dozen trip wires strung about 1' above the head of the monster.

Then there is the "two step" trap. The first step on the trigger, sets the trigger, and the second step sets the trap. Timberrogue then sets the trap and you get to spring it.

Then there is the trigger is placed far from the trap problem. Timberrogue rolls over the trigger, which opens the pit 50' behind the trigger and everyone falls in.

Then there is the teleport trap. This trap is actually designed to simulate an infinite corredor, but with Timberrogue, the effect could be nasty. You roll Timberrogue down the hall and suddnely Timberrogue comes at you from behind. TIMBER! We got a strike! I love bowling for adventurers! :smirk:
Shovel Warrior

06-24-03, 04:04 PM
I think that cult is better.

Tzor: as for the teleport trap, i once had a monsterless dungeon that consisted of nothing but rooms and hallways that looked exactly the same and teleportation rooms. The pc's would enter a room, close the door, open it again and see a different room. When they step out, they are teleported to the begining of the dungeon. God that was a fun session

don't dismiss chickens. when i said i used chickens for trap detection, i should have said for certain traps such as door trapped by sigils. statues have the same tendancy to zap you with some nasty spell too, so you lob a chicken at it.

can your timberlog do this: your low on hit points and your being chased by two rather large and nasty trolls. you reach into your bag of animal holding (we came up with this after we found out nothing can live in an actual bag of holding. the bag of animal holding provides feed and comfortable holdings until the victim is ready) and start lobbing chickens over your shoulder. trolls are so dumb they'll likely start feeding on the fowl than give further pursuit.

it just acured to me that i'm coming off as rather cruel to poultry. oh well, there just chickens. unless god is a chicken...

Well, unless we get a load of people wanting to call it a foundation, I think "Cult of the Timberrogue" is what it'll be.

Dibbs on High Priest/Founder
We could use some middle-manageent priests, acolytes, hangers on, cult groupies and sacrifices though.

We are considering upgrades for the log. Ironwood is a great idea, but not really possible at the moment, as we're currently trapped inside the dungeon. (My kingdom for a town portal scroll) but we might consider studding him or banding him if we can find any old nails or barrels.

Tzor: not much could be done about the teleport trap...though we could probably do spot checks to determine where the corridor seems to repeat. Which could give us a good chance of finding the device with some hard searchings. Once we find the device, Log will disarm it.

But that kind of thing is rare so its not likely to be a big deal.

As for the 'chase the goblin down the tripwire hallway' trap, the ta;lest member of the party is a very short human. The res tof the party is dwarves and a gnome. But even so...

Party sees the goblin.
Goblin runs.
Timberrogue sneak attacks the goblin
The party aproaches the goblin's splattered remains cautiously, easily spotting the eye-level tripwires.

We've actually had a simiar situation. There were no traps that we noticed, but it was a 'lead them into an ambush' thing. We spotted the bait and when it ran I shouted "The rogue gives chase!" and hurled the log at him. By the time we got done laughing and ambled over to the corpse the ambush was blown and it was a short fight.

SputnikCorp: Good point about the chickens.
But the log does have anti-troll capabilities.
Douse him in a little oil and hurl the sucker at the trolls. They catch a +1 flaming, holy log to the chest <chuckles>

Of course, we have to hurry the fight so we can put him out in time to save him...but objects don;t take much damage from energy and flaming oil doesn;t do much damage so it should be fine.

Iconographer has a much more culty ring than artist.

High Iconographer definately has that "ring" I was looking for.

Here's a log-related question: can you use Time Stop to suspend a Log above the BBEG's head, so that it falls on them? How many Logs could you suspend in the time of the spell? This is definately a silly use of the spell (unless you have an Enlarged Holy Smiting Log to use[/i]) but some baddies just need humiliatin'.

And yet another Holy Image.

Use Awaken (Druid spell) on the log. I would rule that since it was a part of the tree, it now becomes sentient, though it does not have locomotion. Worried about it rotting? Pour some Oil of Timelessness on it! And the blades, well, those are unnecessary. Have nets trailing behind it to entangle anyone it doesn't hit the first time.

God, I really wish I had some stories to relate but I haven;t played for ages and I probably won;t play again for WEEKS
Scheduling is hard at the moment. But keep the faith, my bretheren.

Good image, Leaves. And an interesting question. Of course, you could only suspend one log, for there is only ONE *Log* but you could use lesser balks of wood.

Generally just a good heave has been enough to put the splintery smackdown on our foes.

As to the other suggestions offered...blades would be impractical as the simple act of rolling on them would dull them instantly. Besides reducing Log's trap-detection abilities. ANd the net would probably get tangled up. And Awaken woudn;t work because the log is dead already...

But we're working on getting someone who can cast 'Animate Object.'

Requesting position as High Architect of Log! I'd be in charge of developing traps & such for the Temple of Log. Here's a sample:

An ogre's fist is an old D&D trap, here's how it works: Take a big, heavy door leading into a large, spacious hall. Take humongous tree-trunk, suspend it from ceiling of said chamber with Rope #1. When at rest, the tree truck would protude about 10 feet out of the room (if big heavy door weren't in the way). Tie one end of Rope #2 to big heavy door, run the other end through a pulley at the wall opposite to door. Then tie the other end of Rope #2 to the back of giant tree trunk. When the trap is set up, the log will be aimed at the door, ready to swing down, but held up by Rope #2. Keep in mind, that the hinges on big heavy door are very weak, and the weight of the tree trunk would easily rip them free. However, the door's lock is very large and strong, and keeps the door from swinging open and ripping free.

If you've followed all this, the end result is: Brutish adventures show up, looking to pillage the Temple of Log. They all stand around the big heavy door, waiting for the rogue to pick the lock so they can enter the large spacious room (that being the inside). Rogue picks lock; door swings open and rips free of hinges; tree trunk (Now Divine Avatar of Log!) swings foward, catching the rogue still in locking-picking postition. Rogue decorates the wall. Adventurers flee the Wrath of Log.

Whaddya think?

Dacendaran
Yes, by all means, take up the LOG and smite down the evil that lurks in your world. BUT! There is a catch. You must relte your stories of the LOG's heroism to us when he is accepted into your world.

As hard as it is to quantify an avatar of such a mighty being, your average Log should be five feet long, roughly teo feet thick and over one-hundred pounds. Hand-holds should be cut in the sides and you may wish one end to be cut to a point.

The log is Large does 2d6 bludgeoning damage. It can be gripped like a battering ram and used in combat (or as a batteroignram) or it can be burled as a full-round action and do 2d6 damage. Technically it should be a martial weapon with a flat 20/x2 crit.

Its main disadvantage is its bulk. It truely takes a mightly warrior to use him effectively in combat. But he has enough buk to roll down a corridor and discharge most traps that would affect humans.

You may wish to gird your avatar with metal studs or barrel rings.

Stigur
You;re right, we could use more men in the middle. But the cult is young. Those will come.

As for the proper spelling, it depends upon the situation. LOG is used when shouting the deity's name exhaltedly, whereas Log is used when merely saying the name reverantly.

Oh, I've been giving it some thought and decided that, if we are to be truely a religion unto ourselves, out clerics (those who are not druids) will need Domains and a glimpse of their deity's true nature..

Some stats on the LOG as a deity...
The LOG is Neutral Good. He accepts any nonevil followers
His domains are as follows:
* Destruction, for the mighty Log does Smash his enemies and, of course, traps.
* Good, for the Log does smite the evil.
* Luck, for the roll of the Log is like the roll of the dice, he is a fickle, tumbling deity.
* Plant, for the plants give us the Logs...also, his incarnations benefit greatly form the Changestaff spell.
* Protection, for the mighty bulk of the Rolling One does protect us from treacherous traps.
* Strength, for it takes great might to heft our cumbersome deity into battle.
* Trickery, for the log is, at his heart, a rogue and enjoys deceiving his enemies with his harmless facad of immobility.
And, finally...
* War, for the armies of the log will roll over and crush the forces of evil! The Mighty LOG's favored weapon is...HIMSELF! Followers gain Weapon Proficiency (Log) and Weapon Focus (Log).

Yes, this is twice the domains of your average, human deity but logs have many rongs, and this one is always rolling. The LOG is a paradox. Inanimate, yet capable of great things whens et in motion. A protective item, which becomes a mighty weapon of war. And thus the Log is a Pantheon unto himself.

The tough, outer hardwood of the Log, and his thick, rough barky hide emody Log, the warrior-rogue. Destreuction, Strength, War, and Protection.

While the softer, inner core wood represent his tricky but lovable nature...and also plants and good. Good, Luck, Plant and Trickery.

And, of course...there are many rings. If any of our divine seekers can uncover more faces of the Log, I'm sure he can work them into his deep and wavy grain.

Perhaps we could call the lay members of the cult "Bumps" and/or "Knots", Accoyltes "Twigs", priests "Branches", and so forth.

Really liked the stats and domains of the LOG.

While not officially a member of the Cult of Log, I have a theory that could make the avatar of LOG into something truly remarkable. As a Wizard I could enchant the Log using a combination of permanency, levitate and unseen servant. I could thus impart to the Log with a small amount of self-locomotion.

For you see the levitation will hold the Log aloft and the Logs servant will guide and move it as the Log wills.

It remains to be seen if this magic can come to fruition. I shall research the technique and report back my findings.

As First Wizard In Charge Of Researching Upgrades for the LOG i am currently researching the LOG as an animated object. It is said that animated obejects with wheels have the best speed (60 or something) as they need not lurch, rock, etc to move and dont use legs. the LOG is round even with lumps where branches were and could be treated as a wheel in it self. this way the LOG as an animated object could roll 10-20 feet (or as party wishes) on its own without the help of players leaving them free to react to anything. also this would allow the LOG to roll past a corner and stop in the corridor confusing any monsters and they will (in curiousity) check it out allowing the rogue to utilize surprize attack and the timberrogue to do so as well by attacking while the creatures are confusingly looking at it. The rest of the party can use this time to prepare for battle (cast spells, get out weapons, load x-bows, etc). Research is still being done but there is why i think animation would be a great idea for the LOG!

Memo:

Welcome all to the cult of the LOG, Sir Galahad, many thanks for instating my power through worshippers in more numbers. The more of you we get, the greater I BECOME...

I do have a few issues that we need to clear up though.
1 - please refer to earlier notes about referring to the LOG. I am not his loggieness nor does one approve of 'big L'.
2 - I know I have been putting on wight recently but I am not 'chubby', no fat jokes or we will play the anvil song, except it shall be known as the timber song...
3 - Many thanks to baneofkobolds for trying to get me moving, refer to earlier point.

Also, wecome to Xeran Van Houten to the cult, can I get an amen? AMEN, can I get a log? LOG!

I am afraid almost all of the positions are taken; cult idiot, cheif wizard, researcher, high priest, but we do have a role open for you.... Chief massage therapist for the LOG, I have many knots (bad pun I know) and would greatly appreciate a devout massage once in a while.

Thenk you for you attention

I swear to uphold the tenents of the Almighty Log and bring his great Splintery Wrath upon any who defile or betray his Church.

All Hailz the LOG!

Now, let us rejoice in and praise the Almighty Log with a rousing course of our holy anthem... in the key of E:

What rolls down stairs, alone or in pairs, rolls
over your neighbour's dog?
What's great for a snack and fits on your back?
It's Log, Log, Log!

It's Log, Log, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
It's Log, Log, it's better than bad, it's good!

Everyone wants a log!
You're gonna love it, Log!
Come on and get your log!

And, I return...
Varthalon, good suggestion. I'm mulling it over now.

Zorander, excellent. Glad to see even outsiders pondering the greatness of the LOG. But I think your plan may be a bit complex.

baneofkobolds, you continue to earn your title, Yours is an excllent idea. And it reminds me of something...in MAgic of Faerun there is a weapon enhancement called "Flying" which teanrs the weapon into an animated object with a flying speed of 30'...it is a +1 enhancement...it might be a good way to go.

And, I'd like to remind everyone (including Timber Rogue) that the member known as Timber Rogue is the cult *mascot* and, possibly, an lesser incarnation of the great and powerful LOG, but he is not the deity himself. Only I, the high priest, am in direct contact with the true Splintery One..and he is pleased wih you all.

Carry on and keep the faith.

Here is an idea:

Get a log and hollow out the core. Saw the log into several sections of equal lengths. Plate the inside of each section with metal, and cut spiraling grooves into the inner side of this plating. Then, create poles (one for each section minus one) about as wide as the core and as long as each section, with spiraling ridges on the outside to match the spiraling grooves in the core plating. Fill in half of the core of one log. Cut a circle into one end of another log that is somewhat wider than the core. Create a metal poll that is just like the others, except that it is half as long and has a wide disk at the end to match the hole in the section that was just mentioned.
You now have MiniLogs that can be screwed together to fit whatever size hallway you need to fill. You can also create weapons that can be screwed onto the ends of MiniLogs.
Oops

07-29-03, 05:38 PM
More metagaming for Log enthusiasts:

Get a Log and hollow it out (you don't actually need a Log, just something similar in shape), but make one end very narrow and the other end very wide. Plate the outside so that it is smooth, but put a wider ring on the end with the narrow hole so that it looks like a pipe in a Mario game. Make a container that wraps neatly around the log and can be pushed up to the ring. Fill the container with water and shove the Log into the end. You now have a Super Soaker.

Indeed! I must apologize for miwssing his post. Indeed, a truely worthy name for a harrier of the Log.

As to these new ideas from Oops...they are interesting, indeed...but their complex nature defies tha natural simplicity of the great Splintery One...They will require much pondering oin the ethics of sawing up our holy symbol...

Oh, yes, and baneofkobolds... *Definately* get magic of Faerun. It's *way* better than Tome and Blood (the onbly thing T&B had going for it was some cool PrCs), even if you don't play in the realms.

It;s got rules on mageduels, most of the feats inside it were pilfered for tome and blood, it's got over 200 spells, almost 200 magic items, almost a dozen Prcs, it;s got new materials for making weapons and amror AND special materials for making more potent magic items like Wands.

Definately a must-buy for spellcasters of *all* sorts. Even at $30, it's worth it IMO.

Oh, and it's almost twice the size of T&B and *color*

As cult mascot I feel I must add my 2 cp about this whole hollowing out the a log thing.

A log, stop me if I'm wrong, is an attempt to mirror THE LOG in our realm. the LOG ain't hollow, this is mere desecration of our holy lord of the heavenly woods.

Methinks we need a ruling from the high priest...

Xeran Van Houten my friend, fate is fickle mistress indeed!:D

I'm sure there is an adjustable Log system that doesn't involve hollowing the Log, but it would still require the Log to be sawed into several sections. Also, neither system would be practical without someone very skilled at metalworking, and the water jet thing isn't something you need a Log for; you just need some form of funnel. Don't you have to saw off the ends of the original Log?

You see, Oops, the Log already existed within the tree. Removing the Log from the tree by sawing was merely causing the being that was Log to come into full fruition.

Or, something like that. Personally, I like the customizable, attachable mini-Logs. I don't think the minor modifications interfer too severely with the fundamental Log-ness.

Warm, wooden welcomes to all the new members!

Q: What is Log's favorite form of politics?
A: Logrolling
Varthalon

07-30-03, 01:27 PM
While I wouldn't recommend hollowing out an incarnation of the LOG, many of the LOGs avatars are already, naturally hollow.

A hollow log would be very useful party member without greatly reducing its mass and weight. The hollow LOG could store items for the party. It could create bardic aspects of the LOG as it inspires the party and demoralizes the enemy by letting another party member use it as a drum or diggery-do. Also, you could fill the log with liquid mercury to get a mercural LOG with a better critical hit multiplier.

A very hollowed log (with only a thin wall of wood) could be used to store gallons of holy water (actually the water would probably become holy for being stored in the LOG), poisons, and other stuff. The LOG attacks an enemy, bursting in the process doing additional damage. After the battle the party mage casts Mending, restoring the LOG to its original condition.

I have also been thinking of the possibility of inscribing glyphs, wards, magic mouths, and symbols on the outside of the LOG. I imagine that there were times in its early adventuring career that while tumbling down the steps revealing traps, the LOG came to rest at the bottom of the stairs and witnessed the enemy, now warned of the party's approach, set-up an ambush. Poor LOG had to lay there helpless and watch. But if it had, say a glyph of warding (electrical) on it....

"....the LOG expertly spun down the spiraling stairs discharging the traps that would have harmed his weaker skinned friends. At the bottom of the stairs LOG rolled across the room and rested near a wall for the rest of the party to catch up, but wait, a group of kobalds were arming themselves and hiding around the room. "AMMMMBUSHHHH!," screams the LOG to his party, then as a overly curious kobald examines the LOG that just gave away their positions the LOG strike with a 8d6 jolt of electricity for the opening round of combat..."
baneofkobolds

07-30-03, 04:21 PM
as an idol to all those whom revere it the LOG would most certainly fit (in part) a bard inspiring all those who see it maybe the class could be adjusted for the LOG or maybe a special instrument could be devised and become the favoured instrument for bards whom revere the LOG (just as other deities have favored weapons) i will begin peliminary research on both subjects as i am head of research and with comments for the High Priest as well as all the other followers in the cult one can be chosen to fully research

also the motion thing im falling behind on research sorry and animate object seems to be the best and other enhancing spells such as iron wood would be cast on it

a note on iron wood only a small area can be turned to iron woul at a time and if only have the capable area is done it gets and extra enancment (+1 or something) i figure double the minimum druids need to cast the spell and the LOG in whole would have the bonus enchantment!

research to be continued.....

Why not research a way to make the almighty LOG a Golem? Then, it could move as necessary.

And groups of LOG could get some mighty morphing (splintering?) action and form the MIGHTY LOG, a beast of immense power and awesometasticness. :D
Varthalon

07-30-03, 06:35 PM
Golem sounds good. How about a Trent? I'm picturing a nice normal looking LOG that upon need can sprout arms and legs (as many as it wants and with the multi-dexterity feat) when going into Golem or active Trent mode.

These, of course, are highly advanced mortal forms of the LOG.
Galahad_Knight

07-30-03, 07:00 PM
As a quick note, the avatars of the mighty LOG are indeed subject to a Druid (or Log Priest with the Plant Domain) casting Changestaff on them to turn them into Ents.

So it would be a simple matter to make a Wonderous Item LOG that could become an Ent, perhaps three times per day.

i was wondering...

may i have the honor of being first berserker in the cult of LOG? how's about it? Also, may i adapt the concept of the being of LOG into a campaign i play in? i mean, i know it's up to my DM, but my 11th lev rgr/2nd lev DWS does get an animal companion, and if i could only pass that all up to get a shot at a being as magnificent as LOG, i would be greatly honored...maybe for my title i could be second (to the High Priest) ranger in the order of the LOG, and if neither of those, i do suppose any position available so that i may spread the greatness of the Timberrogue would be greatly appreciated...so, is it a'ight if i implement the LOG into the campaigns i'm in? it could be like a spreading of the faith...if we keep at it, LOG could become a full fledged recognized deity:angel:

A thought about the LOG Golem from the Consecrated Harrier division:

Would it be more advantagious to incarnate the golem, as per the Incarnate Construct template in the 3e Savage Species book?

Althought this might not be a good idea since it then loses it's Holy imunities to damage that would harm it's mortal followers...
baneofkobolds

07-31-03, 11:34 AM
An incarnate LOG golem would be an independent person (mostly apt to worship the LOG itself) youd loose control over it but if you were a powerful wizard/sorcerer who worshiped the LOG then it may become follower/cohort.

As head researcher i have to say that a LOG golem would be a great idea on its own. an animated constuct is starting to seem less "great" a golem could be made of various sizes. a medium sized one would be great for and adventure and a huge one would be be great for gaurding a party's stronghold. right now i am researching body design for the LOG golem. i figure that it could use basic LOG design with roots attached to the bottom for a walking movement. to roll the rolls could come to gether extending the legnth of the LOG. as for arms vines would be great as they are strong and thin (folded against body so could still role. eyes may be hole naturally in the LOG from when it was a tree. if anyone has any ideas for how the body could be made better please post.....

research to continue.....
Kexizzoc

07-31-03, 12:32 PM
Kexizzoc, excellent design. The log approves. But, no stairs. Though, of course, the mighty Log can indeed go down stairs, ramps allow him to dander the grounds with more ease and momentum. But, of course, that means our followers will have to adapt. Leaping, Donkey Kong-like over the deity's sacred incarnations as they perform their duties. But sacrifices must be made.

*gasp!* I can see it now... the Glory of the City of Log! Log Heaven!

Logs rolling everywhere, big and small logs, up and down ramps, over bridges and past intersections, everything all shiny and sparkly. Only the most devout would make a pilgrimage to the City of Log, for the Children of Log (those being the said various logs) cannot be bothered with who they may or may not run over. The word of the High Priest are wise indeed.

Imagine the tales of the wanderer with a mighty Log incarnate hefted upon his/her shoulder, aiding those who need aid, Smiting evil, and occasionally carousing in local taverns to rejoice in the glory of The Log.

Just imagine the utter terror inspired by those who walk into battle wielding naught but an incarnation of the Almighty Log, laying waste to those who would do Him, The Log Almighty, wrong with a furiously zealous "Splintery Smite!" or "Holy Splintery Smite!"

here's an idea for an embodiment of His Splinteryness,

what about that whole "beget bogun" thing? isn't that like where a ranger or a druid makes a construct out of natural materials? like, say, the whittled trunk of a 2-3 feet thick tree? what say ye?
baneofkobolds

08-02-03, 12:17 AM
i say (as head researcher) a bogun LOG would be great for the character whos not a wizard or the party without one of course size may decrease but thats ok. I will research that as well. Right now my ranger/rogue/psion/sorcerer PC (im DM not him) who happens to worship the LOG has begun the creation of a timberrouge. he also has plans on making golems and if the LOG golem comes out pleasing him he will make it. either way it will be posted. and as a ranger maybe he could be first to try the bogun LOG. Soon the PC will have a LOG of all sorts! After the prossess of all these animations of the LOG i may research some spells that focus on the LOG. Most will end up being ranger and druid spells but some will fit in the other classes. Any one with ideas for spells of the LOG please share. Oh and i hope know one minds if i use my old PC's name in the spell names just like other wizards (like Mordekien and Nystul). If anyone really object to that tell me i understand.

research to continue.........

Indeed! I really think we cannot possibly have too much awesometasticness, and as awesometastic as even mundane timberrogues are, the more and mightier logs you have, the more awesometasticness there is to spread around. For the smiting of evil, and whatknot.

'K, I need sleep now, before the nice men with the straitjackets come back.

You know, a straitjacket is an excellent way to become closer to the Log, because it effectively takes away your limbs, even as the limbs of the tree were stripped away from the trunk to yeild the very first timberrogue.

I can see the makings of a prestige class, where particularly devout followers try to become the log. You wear a straitjacket, and all your powers are lost if you take it off . . .

Eek! No, I wasn't volunteering! Get away from me with that straitjacket, darnit!

Now just out of professional curiosity, are we lurkers actually supposed to be lurking in other forums for a reason or not. I mean are we actually supposed to be learning something:D

Good rant, a bit misdirecred, but I applaud the effort at least. :D

As for the duties of the lurker...uh, sure. Lurk as much as you can. If you find something interesting and valid to the cause, report on it. Otherwise, just feelf ree to luek.

Maybe post on random threads to say that you're just lurking, but in an official capacity. Not exactly stealthy, but the irony factor makes it funny/

Lurk bump.

<I have broken the prime rule of Lurking... i.e. Do Not Post... but I have deemed it necessary to expand the Lurkers of Log 's powers to include keeping this thread from fading into obscurity.>

And just a question about the implementation of a log <small 'l' for I am not talking of the LOG itself, but of a lesser manifestation> in general, and roughly what its dimensions should be, especially weight. Unfortunately, my psion character most likely will not be able to heft the mighty log, but we have now been joined by a paladin, so Holy log righteousness will ensue! Expect stories from either myself or the Holy Architect of Log <My DM>.

Soooo..... for my lesser manifestation of the Splintery Log of Smiting Stuff, i was wondering maybe if we could make a wood golem or something like that, (again with the beget bogun, is that even a spell anymore???), but i was wondering about stat.'s... would it just be standard wood hardness and hp? Also, how is Its Splinteryness's lesser physical form wielded? if i'm medium, is the timberrogue (as a weapon) two sizes larger than me, or just one, so i can use it two handed? maybe we should work on feats or special attacks that would personify the fighting style of the wielded Log. Like the bigass sweeping attacks that beats the hell out of anyone within 5 ft. of you, and they must make a fort save (dc. 10 + damage dealt) to stay on their feet. I dunno, just throwin stuff out...

Ah, good to see the Log continues to roll ever onward.

As to questioins of the dimensions of the Log...the average manifestation is five-feet long, about two feet thick and at least one-hundred pounds. In 3.0 trerms it is a Large weapon which deals 2d6 damage. Typical implementation in combat is to simply hurl it at the biggest target (Preferably while shouting "SNEAK ATTACK!!!") then charge in with regular weapons.

If used as a melee weapon it is probably best to grip it by the sides. Our original Log has hand-olds cut into his sides to allow his human followers to better interact with his earthly messenger. But as pictured above, a metal handgrup wouldn;t be out of line as long as it doesn;t interfere with the rolling.

Once gripped, you;d probably use it with a forward thrust like a battering ram, OR, hefted up over the shoulder and brought down in a massive crushing blow. Those who are truely filled with the power of the LOG may be able to grip it with both hands at the base and swing it as a mighty club.

The original intent of the LOG was not as a weapon fo war, but as a protector, to stave off traps and locks. But the Log needed to protect his companions and thus had to take up the mantle of a holy weapon.

As for smaller versions...I could see scaled down versions fror smaller or weaker followerrs, but these would have less effect as a trap-finding protector and would be more weapon-like...sort of inanimate paladins... I would suggest using the stats for a Greatclub, wiuth the added functionality of doubling as a battering ram.

The idea of a wood golem is still intreaguing, but it may take away from the essentially logginess of the Log.

Below are some possible stats for an Avatar of the Log using weapon enhancements (including the "Flying" enhancement from Magic of faerum)

As a Weapon:
Large Exotic Weapon
Cost: 0 (The bounty of the log is free to all)
Damage: Small 1d10, Medium 2d6
* Enhancements: +5 to hit and damage. Holy (+2d6 against evil), Flying (animated object, see below), Merciful (Can be made to do subdual damage +1d6 if desired)
Critical x3
* Enhancements: Impact (increases crit range to 19-20)
Range Increment 10ft
Weight: 100lbs
Bludgeoning

As an Animated Object:
(Stats for a standard human-sized log, scale up or down appropriately for size)
Medium Construct
HD: 2d10+70 (81 HP)
Init: +0
Speed: 30ft Flying (perfect) or 70ft rolling
AC: 14 (+4 natural) Logs studded with metal get a +1 armor bonus.
Base Attack +1
Attacks: Slam +7 melee 2d6+6(+2d6 vs evil, +1d6 if subdual) 19-20/x3 crit
Face/Reach: 5ft/5ft
Special Attacks: See above
Special Qualities: Hardness 10, Construct Traits, Darkvision 60ft, Low-Light vision, Improved Speed, Also see above.
Saves: Fort +9, Ref +9, Will +4
Abilities: Str 12, Dex 10, Con --, Int --, Wis 1, Cha 1
Skills: --
Feats: --

Besides the magic weapon abilities listed above, the animated avatar of the log can fly at 3oft, with erfect maneuverability or roll along the gorund at 70ft.

Note, this is just the statistics for a minor avatar, a +10 animated weapon. True avatars of the Log have intelligence scores, feats, skills and higher ability scores.
This level of enhancement costs 200,000gp. True avatars of the log are not for erthly sale or manufacture.

With great trepidation, this humble follower feels he must respectfully ask for the High Priest's clarification of his interpretation of the Holy Scripture.

A number of the Animated Object stats are off, compared to the 3.5 SRD. Here's the SRD version, with differences in bold:Animated Object, Medium
Medium Construct
Hit Dice: 2d10+20 (31 hp)
Initiative: +0
Speed: 30 ft. (6 squares); 40 ft. legs, 50 ft. multiple legs, 70 ft. wheels
Armor Class: 14 (+4 natural), touch 10, flatfooted 14
Base Attack/Grapple: +1/+2
Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1)
Full Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1)
Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft.
Special Attacks: See text
Special Qualities: Construct traits, darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision; also see text
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +0, Will -5
Abilities: Str 12, Dex 10, Con --, Int --, Wis 1, Cha 1Now, I understand His Holyness added all the weapon enhancements as per the Large Exotic Weapon above. But that still leaves a number of discrepancies (like the extra 50 hp). Plus it might be easier to spread the faith to nonbeliever DMs using a minor avatar version without said divinely inspired enhancements.

As such, here is my own humble attempt at the basic Animated and Awakened Log, may it please the splintery one...

Animated Log
Medium Construct
Hit Dice: 2d10+20 (31 hp)
Initiative: +0
Speed: 30 ft. (6 squares); roll 70 ft.(*); swim 15 ft
Armor Class: 14 (+4 natural), touch 10, flatfooted 14
Base Attack/Grapple: +1/--
Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1)
Full Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1)
Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft.
Special Attacks: --
Special Qualities: Hardness 5, construct traits, darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision; improved speed
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +0, Will -5
Abilities: Str 12, Dex 10, Con --, Int --, Wis 1, Cha 1
Challenge Rating: 2

Awakened Log
Medium Plant(?)
Hit Dice: 2d10 (11 hp)
Initiative: +0
Speed: 30 ft. (6 squares); roll 70 ft.(*); swim 15 ft
Armor Class: 14 (+4 natural), touch 10, flatfooted 14
Base Attack/Grapple: +1/--
Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1)
Full Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1)
Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft.
Special Attacks: --
Special Qualities: Hardness 5, plant traits, low-light vision; improved speed
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +0, Will +0
Abilities: Str 12, Dex 10, Con --, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 10
Feats: 1 feat
Challenge Rating: 2

(*)Improved speed: the rolling speed of 70ft. can only be achieved in the absence of obstacles or difficult terrain.

Notes: I'm following the Awaken Tree model here. Quote: "An awakened tree has characteristics as if it were an animated object, except that it gains the plant type and its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores are each 3d6." Gaining the Plant type is a little unclear, but I will assume it acts as if gaining a template. Quote: "Unless a template indicates otherwise, the new creature has the traits of the new type but the features of the original type." In the case of Construct vs. Plant type, HD size, BAB, saves and skill points are features, whereas Plant traits and Construct traits are... well... traits. That means the Awakened Log loses darkvision, some immunities and the bonus hitpoints, but it is not destroyed at 0 HP and can heal damage on its own or through the normal healing spells.

Edit: I reduced rolling speed back down to 70ft. I believe the speeds listed for legs, multiple legs and wheels already include the Improved Speed.

Sorry if I stepped on your toes, Baneofkobolds...I was bored <chuckles>

Conaill, actually, my stats were spot on.

You're forgetting that the Log *I* posted is also a +5 magic weapon which does 2d6+5 damage.

Each point of bonus adds one to Hardness and 10 to HP, an animated weapon deals its normal damage and has access to its enhancemtns. It also flies at 30ft

The Flying enhancement from Magic of Faerun is a great value for +1

Although, I did forget swimming speed.

Edit: Noce job on the awakened log though.

Except that when you Awaken it, it gets its own HD and hitpoints, so that +50 HP would no longer apply. And if you Awaken it first, you can technically no longer enchant it as a weapon.

Where does the +10 to the saves come from? Do enhancements add to the saves as well? Couldn't find that one...

If I get into a D&D game, I'm going to see if I can wield a LOG, the way Wan Fu wields his Pillar of Pain in Samurai Shodown II.
Galahad_Knight

08-15-03, 08:54 PM
You're right. The HP and hardness don't apply to an *awakened* Log, but they *do* apply to an *animated* Log.

And yes, magic items get a save bonus to all saves equal to 2 + one-half of their caster level. (Caster level for weapons and armor is their enhancement bonus x3, or the highest caster level of one of their abilities, whichever is higher.) 15/2 =7 (rounded down) +2 equals a +9 bonus to save. Top of page 167 in the 3.5 PHB

The animated Log is a pretty nasty customer.
The Awakened Log is a different story all together. But it has certain advantages the animatred one does not...plus it's cheaper than a quarter-mill in weapon enhancements <chuckles>
Oops

08-16-03, 03:06 AM
Do you want the Log to make as much noise or as little noise as possible?
In WWII, the Stuca dive-bombers the Germans used had devices on them that would make noises when they dove, which is where the sound we think of for such planes comes from. These devices were there specifically to terrorize the enemy.

Do you guys and gals remember from Ren & Stimpy, the whole "Log" commercial thingies??? that could totally be the Log's Holy canticle!!! it went something like...

It's Log, it's Log,
It's big, it's heavy, it's wood
It's Log, it's Log
It's better than bad...it's Good!!!
Everyone wants a Log
You're gonna love a Log
Everyone wants a Log

From Blammo!!!

but i think we could maybe keep that tune and change lyrics slightly to involve splintery smites and sneak attacks and trap-setting-offings and the Log's overall kickassimus nature, which would undoubtedly increase the length of the holy song, but the same tune could be held throughout

LOG ON!!!

I don't see why that would make a difference. For the awakened log, I followed the awakened tree example, which states that "An awakened tree has characteristics as if it were an animated object, except that it gains the plant type [...]"

I still don't buy that argument, even for the animated log. Because in that case the animated log wouldn't need the Hardness (Ex) special ability to keep it's hardness 5 from being a wooden object, and a 1' diameter animated log would have 120 hitpoints, instead of the 2d10+20 it gets as an animated object.

I do agree with you that the Hardness special ability would grant the extra +5 from the enchantment, because it *explicitly* states that the "animated object has the same hardness it had before it was animated.". And the attacks should indeed benefit from the enhancements as well (because the log uses it's own "natural weapons"). But the hitpoints and saves would be overwritten by the Animated Object description.

Oops... "An animated object can be of any nonmagical material." Guess you may need to animate the log first, then enchant it's natural weapons. I think this is the more balanced way of doing it anyway. A flying +5 weapon is not *nearly* as useful as a flying creature with +5 to all its attacks and damage, +50 hit points and +10 to all saves! 100K wouldn't even come close for a permanent enchantment on a creature that has those effects...
Galahad_Knight

08-16-03, 06:51 PM
You probably don't have Magic of Faerun. There's a +1 weapon enhancement that makes your weapon a flying animated object. It is obviously an excetion to the standard rules.

The object is both at once a magic weapon and an animated object.

You couldn't awaken a magical log, nor could you animate one by normal means. But that's what the 'flying' enhancement is for.

I don;t know why you're harping on this. This was done for fun and comedy like *everything else on this thread* it wasn't really meant to be taken seriously and it certainly wasn't meant to be balanced (did you notice where I gave a piece of wood eight domains for its clerics to pick from?), even if it does follow the rules.

I was bored, I made some funny stats for an animated magical log.
I *do* think they follow the rules. But it doesn;t matter in any event.

Heh. You're right, I didn't realize that the animated object part came from the flying enchantment. Makes sense, in a bizarre and twisted way. Only a +1 enchantment, eh? So much for a Permanent Animate Objects requiring 3000 XP! :D With that little detail, I'd have to agree that your version - at least in FR - seems correct. Not that any DM I play with would let me get away with it. ;)

[Yes, I know this thread is for fun and comedy. But I bet I'm not the only one who would love to actually see this idea used in an actual game, so I figured it was worth to get the details right. No offense intended.]

For the audacity of incurring the wrath of the Most Holy High Priest of the LOG, may the Rolling One apply his Splintery punishment to my buttocks!

LOL, it's ok. I probably wasn't being very clear, in retrospect.
Though being a +1 enhancement is actually twice as expensive as a permanent animate object spell.

It needs to be at least a +2 weapon, +1 for the enhancement and +1 to be able to hold an enhancement. That's 8k, 6k just for the extra +1 <chuckles>

Expensive, but worth it.
Anyhow, I'm 90% sure that the stats I listed are actually legal, so if you have a quarter-mill to blow on weapon enhanceents, htere you go <chuckles>

Meanwehile the two methods you listed (awakening and animating) are, undoubtedly cheaper and more accessable to lower-level parties.

The LOG is merciful this eve, he has taken no offense and bids you peace.

"as you lay there bleeding, the cleric unstraps a five-foot long, two-foot wide log from his back, and holds it high above his head, chanting what would seem to be a jingle...he then touches your wounds with the splintery shaft and you begin to feel on the mend, at least, if not healed completely"

Thanks for the much-needed bump, Verune. I'm sorry I haven't done it myselv, but there's really nothing to report. I haven't played in months, our GM is laid up with a back surgury and won't be able to play for 3 weeks...and then someone else is starting a new game instead of continuing the old one. :( So the original Log is languishing in roleplay limbo.

Of course, the point of this thread, riginally, was to tell others about the Log, get them to use it in their campaigns and then have them post their stories about it.

So far there's little evidence that anyone else has even tried it and nobody has posted any stories so perhaps bumping the thread is pointless?

I have forsaken my quest in search of the legendary marmot in order to devote myself full time to the service of the Log. Your humble servant Meep quietly thanks you for your consideration great wise High Priest of the Cult of the Log.

baneofkobolds:

I appreciate your extensive research in the Log Enhancement Project Exuding Royalty (LEPER) but I'm sure you were only planning to use your powerful and wondrous magic to promote lower logs to more prestigious avatars of the Great Log, right? I could not imagine the Log itself needing the help of mortals in any way.

I am also sure the Exalted Log will reward your efforts by shwacking kobolds throughout its earlthy reign. As a proud and powerful War Bunny I offer myself as your familiar for the second and occasional fifth weeks of the month, should the High Priest of the Cult of The Log permit such a duty.

As a familiar, I would gladly chant "Meep!" reverently while you researched, and offer very small spheres of my used and processed food in random locations for components in your powerful magic.

I shall devote the other weeks of the month to aiding the Lurkers in search of benefits to the Log. Thus, retaining my part time Lurker status.

My brethren, we must pull together now, in our eleventh hour.

if we cannot maintain stability within, we must splinterilysmite throughout until we reign supreme of all cults and place the Timberrogue above all others in the pantheon of D&D. We must modify our campaigns, to include his Splinteryness. We shall lurk, and lurk hard, and instead of <bump> we must post as such <splintery smite!> to further confound our enemies, all those who would have our memories of the LOG banished into the forgotten days of our mortal existences. The time has come, my brethren, to strike out at other forums, other boards, and turn all of our members into lurkers who post <splintery smite!> and promote our beloved LOG above all other deities, for who else can display the benevolence our patron has, in imparting to us knowledge of it's simple existence, a blessing many normal mortals do not possess. This knowledge makes us elite, and by spreading our splintery smites, we shall spread our faith, and build up a foundation around our existing members, and shall grow to be the strongest following these boards have ever seen. So to you, my brethren, i now beseech...

I humbly request to join the cult of the mighty Log, and have no problem filling in lower positions. But I would like to assasinate any enemies of Log, cuz I'm good at that kind of thing.

An arrow is just a feathered log with a metal(or ironwood) tip.

I have an idea, I shall become a Bard of Log! I will devote myself to spreading tales of his greatness across the land! I will also gather information of our enemies in my travels. What says the Almighty Log to this idea?

Sorery I've been a bit remiss in posting, lately.
But with no game for months, np game in the immediate future and other stuff there just hasn't een much to post, you know?

Welcome aboard, Trent and Sinner. I hope you have fun using the Log in your games. Please post how it turns out.

baneofkobolds...I don't know about D&D elvish, but I found some Sindarin. The n or v are mean Noun or Verb, of course.

[Hiswelókë's Sindarin dictionary (Edition 1.5, Lexicon 0.99)]
Flame: lach n., lacha- v., lacho v. imp., naur n.

I couldn;t find oil or fuel, but I found lamp
[Hiswelókë's Sindarin dictionary (Edition 1.5, Lexicon 0.99)]
Lamp: calar n.

I also found a few other words you might find interesting
[Hiswelókë's Sindarin dictionary (Edition 1.5, Lexicon 0.99)]
Ent: onod n.

Wood: tawar n.

Wooden: tawaren adj.

Best I could do, sorry.

I think there were some brief lexicons in the early 3.5 Dragon issues that dealt with the player races.
I have a dragon lexicon in the anneversary issue. I haven't seen the others though.

If you look hard enough you can find rtools and onhline dictionary for tolkienic elvish (sindarin) and dwarvish (forgot the name)

That's what i used.

Actually, we had a similar method of trap detection- barrels full of water (for floor traps) and a Orc Double axe of throwing/returning for head height tripwires and what have you. ^^;;;;;;
[Never mind that was are group that was made of a rogue/aristocrat, a rogue/fighter, a rogue/cleric and a bard! between us we had more ranks in search and disable device than three normal parties- and we still used the barrels as the first line of defense.]

i dont know if the awaken spell would work on a no longer living tree (or piece of one) but if it did and you could lend the druid a rod of metamagic maximize seeing as TECHNICALLY the int wis and cha are variable amounts (3d6) your log would end up with a INT WIS and CHA of 18 each! and hey if the druid knows the empower spell feat Log would have a 27 each. :) Log the Epic Sorceror!

Anyone interested in publishing a small booklet on the LOG?

E.N.Publishing (http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/news/enpublishing/) is starting a series of 2000-7000 word PDFs called "E.N.Arsenal", focusing on individual weapons. They already have one planned on the spiked chain, daggers, and "sticks and stones". Contents can include historical information, new rules, magic weapon, advice and techniques, special feats, prestige classes etc. Seems like the LOG would fit right in.

Check this thread over of ENWorld (http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64520) for more info.

PS: For a sense of perspective... this thread alone contains about 12-15,000 words, by my own estimate (excluding sig files etc.) We definitely have enough material...

I don't have the time to take the lead on this, and obviously Galahad_Knight and others would have dibs on that anyway. But I don't mind contributing and/or proofreading...

I think it's safe to say the cult is dead.

The entire point of this thread was to show people what my party did, share my stories and get people to use the log on their games and share their stories.

My game ended abruptly so I have no stories, and none of our "Loyal Followers" have seen fit to actually use the log in their games.

And if they have, they haven't bothered sharing stories with us.

So, the thread becomes a pointless bump fest.

I say post some stories or let it die.

OML=oh-my-Log

I've only just found this thread and upon doing so take my first level in contemplative of the Log. And though it seems the cult is in recess I'm hoping that my :bump: could be the one to set the proverbial log rolling again.

I've seen the error of my logless way and vow that forever henceforth, as the log rolls, so too will I.

Galahad_Knight, I beseech you for the honor that I may call myself your first contemplative of the cult of the Log.

I'll not see this thread die. By some (surely) divine happenstance we start a new campaign tomorrow and where I've had a character ready for nearly a week, I'm scrapping the infidel to play a patron of the Log.

What are the names of the noble adventurers who first weilded the glorious Log? For those, the original disciples of Log, will be to me as Jesus unto God, and their stories through me will reach all corners of the realms (my DM is really going to hate this character).

I'll record the exploits of this, my cleric of Log, and post them here.

Starting tomorrow at lv. 3-

Recently the Log was used by The Sinner to P*ss off an evil god. The party necromancer's soul is bound to this god(unwillingly), so when we were both killed by a phantasmal killer, we both appeared in the underworld at the same place(cosmology is different in our campaign), but he had a big chain wrapped around his neck. whipping out my trusty log I smashed that chain, and we jumped through a doorway back to the material plane. so now this evil god is after me.

I will admit I was a skeptic, an unbeliever, an infidel. I opened this sacred and hoary thread full of ignorance and cynicism. And then I read each and every entry. Well, OK, so I read almost all of them. Well, OK, I skipped around. A lot. Basically I read about fifty of them. Or between 9-26. Perhaps less.

But I have read enough.

I have beheld the light, the wisdom, the wonder that is the LOG. The Spirit of the Timberrogue has moved within my unworthy soul. And I shall walk in paths of darkness no more. Well, at least I won't set off any traps as I do so.

All hail the LOG.

Recent exploits in the campaign I am DMing saw the use of many sons of Log in the crushing of an Orcish camp. Evil was smote most mightily on this day.

Alas, for noone in my group wishes to play as a rogue, for one player is too content to play a half-dragon monk and another wishes to play a barbarian. We are too bogged down with combatants and my lowly druidic self cannot seach for nor disable thy trappeths! But then I remembered a glimmer of light from my past. A shred of lore of LOG emerged in my mind and after countless seconds of searching, I have found and bookmarked the Thread of LOG! Huzzah! Next game, I will endeavor to create a Timber-Rogue of my own, and my party shall be rogue-less, no more! Alack, but I know little of the uses, nor the methods of construction of such an awesome being, and have had to resort to using my brain! Tell me what mine half-assed guide lacketh!

How to make a Timber-rogue:

1. Find a good, sturdy tree, about two or three feet thick.
2. Go get your barbarian friend
3. Have him cut down said tree
4. Cut out a log about five feet in length
5. Cut some handholds in log
6. Go find an armorsmith
7. Have him reinforce your log with some spiked steel/adamantine/mithral plating

How to use a Timber-Rogue:
1. Roll it down suspicious hallways
2. Have your barbarian friend throw it at suspicious doors
3. Have your barbarian friend throw it at suspicious creatures
4. Have your barbarian friend throw it at people you owe money

Yeah, I'll join your cult, but we really should have a written doctrine of faith in LOG. Like the first half with the construction, uses, do's and don't's, and other utilities of the Timber-Rogue, and the second half with the exploits of such Timber-Rogues.

With this nifty trick, The Log will still be in use at epic levels!
Use a restorative spell, except one that works on plants. The tree that The Log came from is most likely dead by now.
Now you have a huge tree to throw at your enemies. Buff up the parties' strongest character, and at Epic Levels, I'm sure that he will be able to carry it around.
Now the last step is to find out how to calculate damage from a falling tree. ;)

Now I haven't actually checked to see if this was mentioned yet, but that log would be damn heavy.

Assuming 5 feet long and 1 foot radius (2 foot diamiter), like you mentioned in the first post.

If it was made out of
Balsa wood, it would weigh: 166.7 lbs.
Red Pine would weigh: 294.2 lbs.
Oak would weigh: 745.3 lbs.
If you got it turned into Ironwood, the weight would go up to: 7,721.4 lbs.

If you're using that as a ranged weapon you'd have to be a hulking hurler.

On the plus side, the Ironwood LOG would inflict 42d6 "sneak attack" damage.
