Fox Lee 01-30-05, 08:53 PM	Let me just say, in general I'm very hapy with the art these days (at least Erol Otis is gone, eh? ;p). My favourite pic, though, is probably from pg 24 of the Book of Exalted Deeds, by "J. Jarvis" - the exalted wizard and his dragon cohort. See, I am a character-focused person, so any art of a person is ruined for me if the face isn't well drawn. And this wizard is just *******ed pretty! ^.^ Plus, the text confirms he is a boy, which means he's basically the only cute young male in any WotC artwork, ever (feel free to give me more examples if you've found some!). He also appears to be a very interesting character - I am intrigued to know if he has any background, what race he is, where he got his scar and metal arm (those are just exceedingly cool!). ...And damn, the dragon is just sublime. Its face in particular; so much intelligence and depth there. I love it! ^.^

Not if the shoulder guard is designed to slip towards the back when raised (which I believe most tend to). Armor that over-spiked is would generally be ceremonial only anyway. As for the spikes on her gauntlets, note that they are on the outside of her forearm, making stabbing herself with them an unlikely occurence. (Not that I think it looks terribly practical either, I'm just saying no armorsmith would make something like that in such a shoddy fashion as to kill its wearer.)

(Check sig??? some nice deviant art of mine in there...Ryld Argith and Dragons) That out of the way...Todd Lockwood's Dragons are sublime and perfect....all of them...er...all of the dragons he did..I like Sam Wood's...but Todd Lockwood is better. The Draconomicon has some of the best art out of all of the D&D books.

I would pick the '30 years of D&D' magazine spot by Todd Lockwood. I don't have a link anywhere to it, but let me just say that the picture is friggen' fantastic. I have it as my Desktop Wallpaper right now. I understand why they did it-- they wanted a little more evil mixed in with the mischief (that was may well have been a retro decision... who knows). I really love the character of the original, and it's such a nice, loose, expressive little painting. I think the art direction i got included some mention of "the kind of thing that would enjoy setting a cat on fire to watch it run around in flames". Wayne Reynolds is simply the best artist at WotC (Sam Woods is a very close second along with Horsely) Shining South has the best artwork of any of the FR books (which IMHO consistantly has the best artwork of any D&D line) in complete agreement.

WotC actually offers me more work than i'm able to take. I just had to turn down two books in a row, sadly. I hate turning down books. And i hate having to take only 4-5 pieces, when i'm being offered more. But my schedule is pretty full pretty much all the time, and i feel like just about *any* project is somehow being "worked in", ya know? It's good to have work, so i'm not complaining. It just sucks that i don't have more time to do more work-- because i really enjoy being involved. Particularly in D&D since it's so near and dear to me, and i've been playing it forever and ever, amen. interesting choices, btw. i don't know if anyone's every commented on the Alkilith before. I kinda went crazy on that one-- it's soooo detailed and super specific in each little weird section. The detail just doesn't show in the online version, nor in the fairly small printed version in the book. I kinda got lost in that thing. Too bad no one will ever see the detail, really. :) and the Spell Weaver-- you may have noticed the dedication to Victor. He was one of my gaming buddies, and he posed for some reference photos for me, before one of our gaming sessions. He died not too long after, and i so included the dedication. I inherited his dice bag, and i keep one of his ten-siders in a little velcro pouch attached to my boots. i guess i'm kind of just babbling-- but as you can imagine, that piece has some special importance to me, and i'm glad that others appreciate it for their own reasons. thanks again. --raven

Most of your Lord of the Rings works are very good as well. I wonder who drew the picture of the Blood War in the DMG, p.160. That has always been one of my favorites, though it is small and perhaps not as detailed as it could be. I don't know where it is to link to it, so I will leave you to check your books if you care. Oh... and I meant to say that my all-time favorite is the Epic Level Handbook Blackguard, not 3.5 Blackguard.

KismetRose 02-19-05, 04:01 AM	I think the best art in all the WOTC books I've seen is in the Book of Vile Darkness, although I can't decide between the drow-demon thing on page 23 or the marilith on page 47. Both pieces are intricate and amazing. I wish, wish, WISH they were in poster form - I would buy them. Quickly. The drow-demon woman (I'm sorry but I'm still not sure just what she is) just looks bizarre with her insectile bottom half. Her lower arms are bisected so that she has two hands on each arm; with her right hands she's caressing the face and pointed ear of this absolutely horrified elven man who is bound on what is probably an altar. She is smiling and has an alien beauty, but she also has this glow to her that can be explained by the rounding of her belly. It is that glow of motherhood that makes her all the more terrible. The marilith holds weapons in her arms, and she is using them on a human man wrapped in her coils. She has intricate jewelry hanging from her and she is beautiful; the best marilith rendering I've seen anywhere. I believe the artist is Arnie Swekel, as his initials are at the bottom of each page that begins a chapter; he did the artwork for all of them, apparently. The other pieces at the head of each chapter are also good, but the two I mentioned above just stand out.
