I'm cross-posting this thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=8849517#post8849517) here.

The challenge is essentially to build a combat-oriented 1st-level commoner for a big tournament I wanna run. No level adjustment. Core, psionics, Complete, and Races only, no campaign books, other books will be considered case by case, but chances are there's very little in other books that a 1st-level commoner could take. Use the elite array for stats and 1st-level fighter wealth for equipment, assume the character begins each fight with full resources.

Since you're a 1st level commoner, all you have is your ability bonuses, your racial abilities, and your feat. Skills aren't likely to figure very prominently. There's a finite number of possible combinations, so there's a finite number of characters that can be made here. I'd like to explore as many of them as possible. For example, is the extra damage from a martial weapon worth the -4?

Those char-op guys ain't got nothin' when it comes to 1st level or core only. Bring the pain.

This could be interesting, Do they start out at a distance from one another? Will there be oppertunities for cover? Are there any environmental dangers involved beyond there just being an empty field?

Here is my start (Using elite Array):
Sven (Half-Orc Commoner 1)
Str17 Dex14 Con13 Int8 Wis10 Cha6
Hp: 5
Ac: 14
Melee AttacK: Longspear +3 (1d8+4) 10ft reach
Ranged Attack: Heavy Crossbow +2 (1d10)
Feat: Simple Weapon Proficiency
Gear: Longspear, Crossbow, 10 bolts, Leather Armor
Skills: Craft (wood working) +3

The Amount of damage he can deal in melee basicly assures that if he hits, he wins, only a dwarf or gnome will have enough hit points (potentially) to beat the average damage from Sven.

At 3rd level I would give him light armor proficiency.
At 4th level I would increase his Strength
At 6th level Medium armor proficiency
At 8th level increase his Constitution
At 9th Martial Weapon Proficiancy either Glaive or Great Sword, or Weapon Focus (Longspear)

lol that has got to be the best lvl 1 commoner I've ever seen!

Are you taking into account this?

The commoner is proficient with one simple weapon. He is not proficient with any other weapons, nor is he proficient with any type of armor or shields.

There's very little chance you'd get a full +2 for the crossbow if you took Weapon Focus: Longspear. You need to be proficient to focus in it, so you'd have a -2 for the crossbow (-4 nonpreficient, +2 dex).

1) Commoners only get one simple weapon proficiency, they don't get the Simple Weapon Proficiency feat.
2) A 1st-level commoner doesn't meet the prerequisites for Weapon Focus 'cause he has no BAB.

It's tricky, isn't it?

You know I never bother to read the prerequsites for weapon focus, Isn't that funny. And yeah I gave the commoner the crossbow for free, just cause I wnated to.

Thanks power gamers for telling Sven why is is mechanicly unsound, I fixed it. :P

Here is an Elf for you too:

(Using elite Array)
Moony (Elf Commoner 1)
Str13 Dex17 Con12 Int10 Wis12 Cha8
Hp: 5
Ac: 17
Melee AttacK: Longsword +1 (1d8+1)
Ranged Attack: Longbow +3 (1d8)
Feat: Shield Proficiency
Gear: Longsword, Long bow, 10 Arrows, Leather Armor, Heavy Wooden Shield
Skills: Craft (wood working) +4

Depends on getting a lucky hit with his bow, but has an Ac that would stand up to ridiculous punishment.
3rd level Weapon Finese, and switch to a rapier
4th increase Dexterity
6th Light armor Proficiency, get a chain shirt
8th increase Strength
9th Either Dodge or Weapon Focus with the bow or the Rapier

Elf Commoners will rule the roost then. Longbow or Longsword all the way! Just take Toughness to offset the Con penalty.

Dwarf (Using elite Array)
Stoned (Dwarf Commoner 1)
Str14 Dex13 Con17 Int10 Wis12 Cha6
Hp: 10
Ac: 13
Melee AttacK: Longspear +1 (1d8+3)
Ranged Attack: Crossbow -3 (1d10)
Feat: Toughness
Gear: Longspear, Heavy Crossbow, 10 bolts, Leather Armor
Skills: Craft (Stone working) +6

Lots of hit ponits, so he may just get another turn if his opponent hits.
3rd level Light Armor Proficiency, get chain shirt
4th increase Constitution
6th simple weapon proficiency, so the crossbow does not suck
8th increase Dexterity
9th either weapon focus or medium armor proficiency

What is Elite Array? A set of ability stats? I can't remember where I've heard it, but if you tell me, I might have a good one for you.

It's in the DMG in the beginning of the character creation chapter.

The elite array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Place them whereever you like.

Level 1 Male Dwarf Commoner
Grubby
HP:7
AC:15 (+3 Armor, +2 Dex)
Initiative:+1

Str15 Con16 Dex13 Int10 Wis12 Cha6

Melee: Halfspear +1 attack, d6+2 (Crit x3)

Range: Halfspear +0 attack d6+1 (Crit x3), Thrown Item (Tanglefoot Bag, Alchemist's Fire, Acid Flask) +0 attack AF 1d6+1,(+1d6 next round); Acid 1d6+1; TB Entangles

Grubby throws his Tanglefoot Bag to slow his enemy. He also drops Caltrops in front of him, and chucks Alchemist's Fire and Acid at his enemy as well. He hurls Halfspears until he has 1 left, or until his enemy gets within melee range. Then he attacks with his Halfspear, occasionally stepping backwards or sideways to attack at a different angle. He assigns his Dodge to whoever he's fighting.

If he can, he puts his parchment into the pints of Oil. He lights the scrolls on fire, and chucks the Oil. Molitov Cocktails.
