Have you see the alltel wireless commercial with the other companies pulling the alltel guy in the van. In the end the Alltel guy says "What level Dungeon Master are you?" Then the other guys look and one says Dungeon masters dont get levels. I for one am offended of the protrayal of this image. I say we start an email campaign to have this commercial removed from TV. On a second note how ever. I have met a lot of people who work as sales people for kiosks in the mall for cell phone companies. usually standing next to the hot girl which will not give the time of day.

Yes we've seen it.
Yes we've talked about it.

Some people seem offended.
I laughed my ass off.

I would oppose such a petition.

The only thing that *****ing about it would do is prove that we're whiners. Let it be, we're the 'bigger man.'

Also, as with Seeker, I got a kick out of it too.

I second Seeker here. I thought the commercial was great. Seriously, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at.
Come Alder, join us in the camaraderie. :D

P.S. I do tend to fancy myself at least a 4th level DM.

We aren't talking about race, gender, religion. We're talking about a freakin' hobby. Sheesh, what's the damage? It's a commercial with a funny joke in it.

If you collect stamps, you're a stamp collector. If you watch birds, you're a bird watcher. If you play games, you're a gamer. Embrace your nerdiness.

C'mon everybody, let's go make a commercial where we make fun of phone companies!

alder, this is precisely why the world is starting to go downhill at an alarming rate.

People have no sense of humor. ANY joke, no matter what its about, insults someone. Thats actually the point. Give me one funny joke or statement that isn't offenseive to someone or something and you get a cookie.
Just get over it. It was funny, and altell probably got alot of gamer customers. Let the world go on and don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

I didn't think that the commercial was funny at all. However I wasn't offended either. D&D jokes are just lame to me and show a lack of creativity in general. The funny jokes are those created by the people who play IMO.

...Or just people who don't use gaming in their jokes.

Although I have seen many funny gamer jokes made by the gamers themselves.

I dunno. I think "Dungeon Masters don't have levels" shows the joke was created by someone who plays. Or at least is familiar with the game.

As opposed to the endless "I'll play you a game of D&D for it" or "Well, I beat you at D&D" jokes that I've seen on a dozen sitcoms, which clearly were written by people with no idea what the game is about.

To quote Eric Idle:

At least one way of measuring the freedom of any society is the amount of comedy that is permitted, and clearly a healthy society permits more satirical comment than a repressive, so that if comedy is to function in some way as a safety release then it must obviously deal with these taboo areas. This is part of the responsibility we accord our licensed jesters, that nothing be excused the searching light of comedy. If anything can survive the probe of humour it is clearly of value, and conversely all groups who claim immunity from laughter are claiming special privileges which should not be granted.

Or know enough to put the laughtrack on that and expect a laugh from gamers... While their ratings plummet because only gamers watch the show for its hilarity, and face it ppl, we ARE the minority!! [/run-on sentence]

I though it was hilarious and probably written by someone who must have played atleast once. It's funny, laugh, don't get offended. It was meant as a joke take it as such. It reminded me a lot of my friends, I didn't get offended in the least.

I also think its stupid some of you think only a gamer can make a good gamer joke. I suppose that means only black people can make black jokes, white people can only make white jokes, straight people straight jokes, and only gay people can make gay jokes. That is the only thing that bugs me, that and that because I'm white I can't say ****** without getting in trouble just because I'm white.

Well to each their own. Usually I like my jokes to be funny, not (intentionally or unintentionally) derogatory. Was the Alltel commercial funny? Not to me, but if it was for others...great. The commercial isn't anything to get hurt over..it just wasn't funny, to me.

Besides I don't think anyone stated that only a gamer can make good gamer jokes. They're usually just a bit funnier (because of some form of knowledge being used) than those jokes not created by a gamer. But thats just my opinion.

I make black jokes, I'm not black. I make gay jokes, I'm not gay. I make jew jokes, I'm not jewish. Why wouldn't I be able to?

As I stated the last time we all whined about this, I normally think this sort of thing is hilarious. However, this time it was so badly written as to contain no humor for me at all.

Nondescript van + non-sequitur (no prior references to RPG) + hitting the audience over the head with a nerd reference just to make Chad (who is a non-cool guy with a non-cool name) look good = the opposite of clever.

Somebody ought to get fired or at least sent to camp to learn how to write. I mean, if somebody is going to bag you for laughs, at least let them do it with style.

Otherwise, in context, I enjoy the offhand D&D nerd remark, here and there. As the man said, there is no such thing as bad exposure.

Ok, I'm going to close the thread because:

1) Although indirectly, it is touching on discussion of groups some feel offended to discuss. Really, this is a board for the discussion of D&D, so lets keep it that way and,

2) There is already a thread over on the Rec Room boards on this discussion.
