| I_Strahd09-06-06, 05:53 AM | the bard. just to make sure you all know. i like the concept of the bard. but there are alot of things i dont like about them. please consider the following. i like the idea of a character being a fighter/wizard/thief. that sounds cool. but how does the crappy singing come to play. (i know what the singing does. but cant understand why the bard must sing. its stupid.) o.k. you cant inspire alot of courage from a mime justure. but the whole singing thing is stupid. any player who becomes a bard is going to waist there turn singing. or doing some crap ass spell or fighting manuver. as you can tell, this is going to be a rant. one thing i want too get off my chest is the fact that alot of players think that a bard can talk a solder out of his armor. or that he can charm a fare maiden out of her... but guess what. any character can do that. its not just for bards. bards (the class) have away with some skills. but not all with diplomacy. if you know what i mean. just for example. a large army is going to converge on a small town. the people are scared. does the bard speak to the commander to stop him. or does the long time worrior and fighter speake to the chief. charisma goes along ways, but i think that the connection is deeper then that. if you need a device that will give you a bonus on attacks, then invest in a magical item. with a magic item you dont have to share exp. ha and (if i need more.) think about the fact that some players hog the spot light just because they are "bards". the bard is not the spokes person just beacuse he is a bard. the original role of a bard is to tell the tale of the hero. not to suck up the spotlight. the bard sucks. and i have my own version of the "bard". its more cut-throut then the happy go lucky bum they do now days. just a broken rant by me. i will not defend myself for the sake of defending. but i will address what i must. thank you. |
| swallowyersoul09-07-06, 02:07 AM | bards are fluffy, not crunchy. but they can be fun. in a hardcore, combat-heavy campaign, the sucker who got stuck with the bard feels only slightly worse than the guy who drew cleric duty. in a role-playing campaign, or an urban-based campaign, or one with lots of problem-solving, a bard can be pretty cool. but yeah, if you're playing a classic 'go into the dungeon, kill things, take their stuff' campaign the bard kinda sucks. you could go over to www.malhavoc.com and check out monte cook's variant bard. he's got a little more gusto to him. |

Are you going to post a link to your version of the bard? Or must we suffer through your hideously large sig for nothing? |
