My friends and I hate the idea of losing a level when resurrected, so we altered the penalty as such: there is no actual level loss, but the character loses teh amount of xp that the level loss would result in, which can only be regained by the normal xp gaining methods. Also, until the character regains enough xp to reach what is needed for their current level, they suffer a -1 on all rolls as per level loss enervation style.

This way, dying still has a big drawback, but you character doesn't actually lose a level and somehow forget how to do that extra damage with that specific sword.

If any of you like this, i encourage its use.

I tend to find the majority of such alternatives to be abhorrent. But I like this one. Simple, really. With no mechanics issues like "Which class do I lose? Can I keep my spells? Can I change the Feat I took when I finally do level again? Do I lose my improved familiar? What about skill points?" :tiphat:

Do they also lose 1 spell slot of the highest level, as per negative level rules?

I agree, Seeker! I normally hate alternatives, just because death penalties should be severe. But DarkPrince's suggestions still culls XP, penalizes the character, but manages to deal with all the nasty mechanics ambiguity that can come with level loss. Well done, sir! Well done! I also tip my hat to you... :tiphat:

I give you a lighter in the crowd as well. :mage:

Eamon, i'm glad you brought that up about the loss of a highest spell slot, and yes, in this system that too would happen. i totally forgot about it.

it is pretty much like suffering a negative level but with actual xp loss. and, since that is the case, additional negative levels from enervation or things like it would stack with the negative level from resurrection.
