| lordsaevus08-15-06, 12:39 AM | A few friends and I are rolling some new characters, and to keep things even (at least starting) and also to keep from becoming over powered we are playing with an idea. Essentially since the average score is 12-13 for an attribute we took 12.5 and multiblied it by 6 (number of attributes) which gives us 75 points to place where we want. This allows all of us to be balanced, noone is uber and noone is uber weak and you can customize your character a little more. Does anyone think this is a good idea or does anyone see a problem with this? If so what type of limitations should be put on this. |
| Darkuwa08-15-06, 12:48 AM | Its a little overpower, 25 point buy only spending 1-1's is 73, and you can get 3 18's with your system. |
| WackyOne08-15-06, 01:08 AM | Why don't you just use point buy, as you want no randomness and a balanced start for all players? The only difference would be that higher stats (16-18) cost more, and you start (before racial modifiers) with all 8s. An array of all 12.5s is a PB 27. Round that to 28 points and you have the "difficult campaign" standard point buy. |
| Araciel08-15-06, 01:12 AM | i use the 'elite array' in my games and it works wonderfully |
| lordsaevus08-15-06, 01:25 AM | Where can I go to learn more about options like "elite array" and "point buy? Is it somthing I missed or does anyone know where I can find this stuff. |
| Darkuwa08-15-06, 01:32 AM | page 169 of the DMG |
| GreatWyrm08-15-06, 01:42 AM | heh heh heh... 169 |
| Mitchell08-15-06, 02:33 AM | And the latest issue of Dragon has a method for character generation using Three-Dragon Ante or regular playing cards. Haven't looked at it, haven't tried, don't have any idea if it's any good. I claim no responsibility for any bad things arising from the use of this system. |
| PhaedrusXY08-15-06, 02:57 AM | I've played in and DM'd games that used exactly the same kind of system you're describing. We even used 80 points in some of the higher powered ones. the only "bad" thing about it is that everyone will protaly have at least one 18. If that doesn't bother you, then it is fine. |
