| Illion the Red02-09-06, 03:24 PM | I only have the three 'Core' Books (PHB, DMG, MM) and would like to know whether this gives me an over-all disadvantage? Heavens no. You are in no way disadvantaged. You have everything you need to play the game (assuming you have dice, a writing implement, and paper) for the rest of your life. |
| Elbethamore02-09-06, 03:35 PM | Disadvantaged compared to whom? Are you in a group where everyone else is using a variety of non-core material? As long as you're not playing with munchkins, you won't suffer using core-rulebooks only. And if the whole party is core only, then you're all set. The material in the PHB is no less powerful than what's in all those supplements, and you can be perfectly effective using that material alone. (Just look at the core druid for an example.) |
| Seeker9502-09-06, 03:55 PM | That you are asking such a question means you have two more books than you need. The Player's Handbook is sufficient. :D |
| Board_Rider02-09-06, 04:13 PM | I would say no unless you play in a group with a bunch of suplements that allow them to do things you want to do...but with rules text behind it. Beyond that I would say that getting more supplements is a good thing though. |
| autumnleaf02-10-06, 01:05 PM | You have a great start if you need some ideas you can find a lot online for free. I know a lot of players have a ton of books that they guard like dragons with treasures But its because were obsessed ( or maybe just me ) and just have to have them all . |
| DragonDeadite02-10-06, 03:52 PM | I have all of the core books and all of the races books (except for the RDragons book) and I'll tell you this much... my most powerful character is completely core. A Dwarf going Dwarven Defender, high AC, high HP, specializes is Disarming and Sundering. Some of the best character builds are completely Core. It doesn't hamper you at all, if anything it's better! Less confusion on rules, less complications on working feats together, stuff like that. |
