I don't know why, but it seems like practically no one here wants to play a cleric. I prefer favored souls because I hate preparing spells, So am I weird this way or are there other people who like playing clerics too?

Ever asked them why?
In my experience people hate playing walking band-aids, and feel they're forced to do so whenever playing a cleric. OR, people dislike the concept of being a highly religious person, so shun clerics for that reason. Personally, I love clerics. Especially ones wielding scythes and long black robes. :D

I play LG clerics; sword-and-board militant types. I'm generally leading the party. :D

I usually play clerics dedicated to a cause, rather than a religion.

I love playing clerics because they are very useful. IMO they are the most powerful class. They make great necros or secondary fighters or both. They wear armor and cast spells withthout penalty. Take the trickery domain and you can make a sneaky con artist with skills such as bluff, diplomacy, disguise, hide, and sense motive. People dislike clerics because they fail to think outside the box. Not every cleric has to be like Jozan. Although it would be nice since he is a hot guy! :D

I like playing clerics aswell, and i also see them as being a better BBEG then an evil wizard, why? you may ask, becuase religion is alot scarier then magic. :D
they are also quite powerful, i also like the idea of being someone or something's Herald\frontman\face of the operation.
you can also take some of the supplemental divine feats and turn your lame 'turn undead' into something useful, it's a very nice class and i think it would take a certain mindset to enjoy playing it...if you need an example of a good(quality) evil cleric, check out the one in 'Carnival'.

so original poster, you're not the only one out there who enjoys this class.

I dont allow non-god clerics. But I do have 3 people in my group that play clerics. One of them is a cleric in every game, and not as the bandaid box either.

I play clerics on occasion. It's a nice class that lets me do a bit of anything depending what the mood of my character is.

And I can yell "Die in the name of <insert deity>!" while I beat people up with holy power. What's not to like about that? Or about blowing hordes of low-level undead into a fine power through the power of faith?

Unless I'm going for a strict character concept that requires another class, I'm usually playing a character that has some form of Cleric level to it, typically the primary level.

I always choose a god, though. I think the notion that clerics can simply pick up two domains and dedicate themselves to an ideal is bunk.

My last primary cleric was the second best melee fighter in our group, lagging only slightly behing the Psychic Warrior. He most definately was NOT a bandaid box or gauze pads, and I like capitalising on the ability to swap out spells for cure spells, it lets me not have to worry so much about having the healing spells.

I agree. The divine feats really add an extra kick, and are always helpful -- especially if you happen to have something like Extra Turning. More fuel for the fire of your righteous wrath. :D

I usualy play non-clerics or favord souls, but in a recent game I played a cleric of Ted (see the thread: D&D board gods) he was really good and definately not a walking band-aid. :coolcthul

I've actually never tried it before, but my first time playing one I find it entertaing to be the main healer of the group. I tend not to go into melee though; 10 str is not fun to melee with.

I never really found them that interesting to roleplay. This is just my opinion, but since they're based so heavily around alignment it seems like most of them are just reflections of their deity and end up being really really good or really really evil and from then on they just become flat characters.

Ultimately, they're useful, but I don't find their spells interesting. I find Spiderclimb, Suggestion, Creation and Disguise Self a lot more fun to work with as a caster than Bless, Cure Light Wounds, and Searing Light.

Cleric spells can usually be broken down into healing, damage, buffs and alignment based stuff basically. Arcane casters get the fun stuff to work with.

Clerics are my 2nd favorite class, right after Paladins. I just plain like playing religious characters (I can count the number of non-religious or semi-religious characters I've played on one finger), so they're a perfect fit for me. They're never "bandaid box" types either - I just pick up a wand of CLW or two for that (later upgraded to CSW) and occassionally toss a spontaneous cast cure spell into the mix if the battle merits it, and other than use my spells largely for buffing, damage-dealing, or miscellaneous non-combat uses (things like Divination, for example).

I also always choose a God, due to being of the opinion that the idea that being devoted to an ideal lets you call up magic out of thin air is utterly ridiculous (whether its a cleric devoted to justice or a Druid devoted to nature or whatever). Thats also one part of the reason I love the Forgotten Realms; if you don't worship a God there, you don't get divine magic or abilities, whether you're a Cleric, Druid, Paladin, Ranger, or whatever.

I like playing the religious types, they have a unique take on the world, and sharing that view with others is expected through roleplaying. And I like being able to preach at my fellow players, and they can't mouth off, or they get no positive energy. :P

Why all the hate toward playing a philosopher cleric? Is it really so alien a notion in DnD that you don't need a deity to do magic? A sorcerer gets by on nothing but his training and ability. A Wizard gets by on training alone. Why is it so difficult to imagine a 'holy man' who doesn't worship a god?

I hate clerics because they are butt-kissers. Blaackguards however, are powerful because they can kick your cleric's arse with higher hit points, easy requirements to get the class, better spells, fiendish servants, better class abilities, etc.

GO GO BLACKGUARD! GO GO BLACKGUARD! DOWN WITH CLERICS! OR AT LEAST GOOD ONES, AS EVIL CLERICS ARE OKAY... :evillaugh

Anyone who disagrees can meet me at the flagpole at three o'clock...
