| sinfang12-26-06, 12:44 PM | An untested system I thought up to be rid of the rather annoying "can only use X spells each day rule" I stress that this is untested, and I need some feedback on what I have so far. The basics In order to cast a spell, the spellcaster must make a Spellcraft check against a DC of (10 + level of spell) As spells are cast, however, the level of each spell is added to the DC for each additional check to cast a spell. For Example: First Cast (DC 10) for a magic missle: (+1) = DC 11 Second cast (DC 11) and a fireball (+3) = DC 14 And so on and so on. Details and balance issues Wizards still prepare a certain number of spells per day - these spells are counted as being one-half (round down) their level for considering how they add to the DC to cast a spell. Same for clerics Sorcerors and other spontainious casters, who have a limited number of spells to begin with, count ALL spells at one-half level for determining casting DC Also, I need a rule, something like once per day with an hour of rest or just depending on how active the wizard is, he may make a roll to reduce his current base cast DC The whole point Firstly, i hate the current system. Wizards spend eight hours resting to blow all their power in five rounds of combat. I want something more fluid, that will encourage wizards to know when to cast and when to pick up a light crossbow. The math in my head tells me it may make wizards overpowered at low levels and underpowered at higher levels, but I suck at math, so I need your help. (and maybe a dice-rolling program) Anyways, that's my idea. |
| CryoSilver12-26-06, 12:47 PM | Seems like a lot of bookkeeping. I say drop wizards and sorcerers, and just use spell-points |
| Izodor_Shadowcaster12-26-06, 01:35 PM | This looks like the Truenaming system. |
| Escef12-26-06, 02:04 PM | Human Wizard 5, Int 17, Spellcraft 8 ranks, Skill Focus(Spellcraft), Magical Aptitude (+2 Spellcraft/Use Magic Device: Total Spellcraft check bonus: +16 Round 1: Fox's Cunning, DC 12 to cast, automatic success, Spellcraft check now at +18 Round 2: Fireball, DC 14 (3rd level + 1st additional spell) to cast, automatic success Round 3: Lightning Bolt, DC 15 to cast, automatic success Round 4: Deep Slumnber, DC 16 to cast, automatic success Round 5: Displacement, DC 17 to cast, automatic success Round 6: Summon Monster III, DC 18 to cast, automatic success Round 7: Haste, DC 19 to cast, automatic success Round 8: Invisibilty, DC 19 to cast, automatic success Total Spells cast: 2nd level-2, 3rd level-6 Total spells castable per day by book wizard of same level and Int: 0 level-4, 1st level-4, 2nd level- 3, 3rd level-2 Sorry, but the system you propose makes wizards dominate the battlefeild, even at low level. It's bad enough what casters can do at high level, but this is nuts. And the sad part is you proposed this system to curtail a spell casting. Edit: The current system does tell casters when it's a bad idea to cast willy-nilly. If the players don't have the judgement to withhold their big guns for when they will most be needed that is their own error. Edit 2: You gain skill ranks faster than you gain access to new spell levels, plus stat bosts along the way will make this problem even worse by 18th level. |
| frasmage12-26-06, 02:26 PM | This looks like the Truenaming system. I thought the same thing |
| sinfang12-26-06, 03:59 PM | Escef: Eek...you're right...i forgot about the dozens of ways a wizard can buff thier stats, but YOU forgot that the half-level modifier would only apply to TWO third-level spells on your list. Izodor: Not familiar with truenaming rules. Cryosilver: Ahh, good ole' Mana Points... I havn't yet seen a magic system that i'm totally happy with. MP is like HP to me, you cast whatever you want up to a point, then you just stop. (or drop) I want a sorta...magic takes effort feel...magic is always there, but you get exhausted after repeated use. And I totally forgot about the dragon sorcerors with 40 charisma... Maybe if these rules only applied to a limited number of spells to begin with...a wizard can try to squeeze out a few more drops of magic after he'd exhausted his daily allotment of 'free' spells...crank up the DC...how about that? |
| Drucilla_Rocks_my_Socks12-26-06, 05:45 PM | What about that mixed with the spell points? Just my 2 cents. So every spell has a DC to cast. You can add a cartain amount of spell points make it easier to cast the spell. All spells would have a minimum number of spell points you would have to put in before you are considered to be out (see below) Get a natural one and you miscast, rolling on some nasty miscast table. The first time you have no spell points and want to cast, you must roll twice and choose the lower of the results. The next time you cast without enough spell points that day (or before you rest and restore your spell points) you roll 3 times and choose the lowest. |
| SKid412-27-06, 09:18 AM | How about a caster level check instead? |
| MagicDude6912-27-06, 09:43 AM | simply do 4 spells per day and 7 more on weekends. :) |
| Escef12-27-06, 09:45 AM | How about a caster level check instead? Much harder to buff than a skill. But caster level doesn't grow quickly enough to be able to make the rising check DCs as the caster gains levels. Not unless you add some sort of sliding scale. Honestly, one would probably be better with a spell point based system, like psionics. |
| sinfang12-27-06, 06:56 PM | 1/2 point for cantrips, and upon getting a new third-level slot, you instead get 3 more MP, maybe? Hmm... Course, then i'd just spam with maximized Magic Missile all day long.:) |
| Otto the Bugbear12-27-06, 08:15 PM | IIRC, Solik did something similar to this awhile back over on the Classes and Prestige Classes board. ***searching... Ahh, yes, here it is. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=654104) |
| Sleepwalker1366612-30-06, 03:16 AM | Why not just take a couple of reserve feats from Complete Mage? |
