My friends and I finally decided to start an Eberron D&D game a few weeks ago. Last night we had our first adventure, I felt it just unique enough to share. I should mention that our DM wanted our characters to be “extraordinary” so we could have some really hard fights right away, so he gave our level 6 characters 5000 extra starting gold and 3 extra stat points to do whatever we wanted with (two of the four characters had somewhat sucky rolls so it helped them. Here is a simple breakdown of our characters

Firninyr – Neutral Evil Elf wizard (who hates elves, long story)
Player – me
Most noteworthy stat – 20 int, 16 cha
Favorite skill – bluff

Crafall – Neutral Evil Shifter ninja (with a katana and monocle, again long story)
Player – A
Most noteworthy stat – 22 dex 16 wis
Favorite skill – turn invisible

Hiro – Neutral human fighter (with and elfin double scimitar and blue hair, need I say long story?)
Player – B
Most noteworthy stat – 16 str (he’s kind of sucky…)
Favorite skill – swinging his scimitar and losing his grip on it (two critical failures so far, both with failed grip checks)

Kenndel – chaotic evil dwarf cleric (omg a NORMAL character? Just wait)
Player – C
Most noteworthy stat – 5 cha (see, now THAT’s amazing)
Favorite skill – jump…with a -8 penalty…yeah

So Our first adventure was a quick cookie cutter while the DM builds a full campaign, the crypt of the crimson stars adventure. I’d also like to point out the DM did random rolls for EVERYthing not expressly defined in the adventure.

SO we find out selves in a nice office, apparently applying for a job. My character is searching the room for valuables, while the others just stand there acting…well suspicious (I’m NO less suspicious looking, possibly more so than even the ninja.) The female gnome secretary ushers us into the room where the old dude offers us the job of obtaining an extremely large dragonshard from a crypt. The entire party rolls a appraise check on an average sized dragonshard and…everyone fails miserably. Despite this, I try to haggle him into giving us more than 2k a pop, bluffing him that I knew exactly how dangerous the caves were, and that we deserved more money. 23 bluff check and…failed. I’d already searched for valuables in the office as well, so guess what’s coming next.

The next day we get on an airship, traveling forever and a day to get to the location. During the trip I invite the party into the office and tell them my plan. By this point player B is generally being a dumb arse and ******* the DM off, but IC I tell the others that I think we should obtain the dragon shard, get our payment, and then kill the old guy who hired us, steal his stuff, and sell the dragon shard later. In probably the only IC action of the night, player B decided Hiro is strongly opposed to it, but won’t stop the rest of us who are in agreement.

No sooner than we finish, than we hear screams coming from the deck. Crafall stealthy like goes up to see a small green colored dragon (at this point I’d like to point out none of use put dragon + green together…) and then reported back to us. We decide we would rather not die, so up to the deck we go. The party starts rushing forward with Crafall hiding behind Hiro and Hobgoblin guards firing their bows from a distance. It reaches my turn and, BOOM I use fireball on the dragon. While standing on the deck. Worst thing is that he saved and took only half damage. Well acid from some acidic breath the battle was fairly one sided, with a katana to the spine dropping him, and an arrow to the brain to finish him off.

After looting the corpse of valuable dragon parts, and filling a vial of its blood (another long story?) I manage to bluff the captain into letting the party down to seek out any more dragons and kill them. We arrive on the ground, and loot the dragons cave, stuffing everything into my nice bag of holding. During this time the DM is rolling the loot, and making horrified expressions as he realized how much treasure we were getting. One bit of loot was a nice headband of int +2 which I quickly dawned and a ceremonial dagger I put on my waist (note the blood in vial, and put two and two together. That and Firninyr mean Dark Ritual Bringer). We went back to the airship, were another successful bluff makes the captain believe we killed more dragons, and despite us not having a scratch on us (aside from acid damage form the first dragon).

Now we actually arrive at the Crypt a few days later. As we approach, 3 Halflings on velociraptor mounts. I talk to them and tell them we were sent to explore the crypt and they said “What, you dare defile the crypt!?” I jump back, and blow them up. I mean I REALLY blew them up, I DISITEGRATED the leader’s mount from under him, and burn the other two to 1 hp. Except for the leader hitting me with an arrow for 2 damage, this battle is a complete slaughter. Our DM is still amazed at what I did; he kept asking “Why did you have to blow them up?” So after the battle, the cleric makes one mount and it’s rider into skeletons, and we decide to rest. I’ve placed an alarm spell and we’re all hiding.

Two hours in I wake up, and alert the others. We see another Halfling scout riding up. I approach him with the others hidden, and…naturally, bluff him into believing I am a lost traveler, but I’ve seen his companions (he was with the other 3 apparently) and some weird travelers heading off away from both us, and the crispy corpses. He runs off at full speed, and we rest up.

Next morning Crafall goes scouting. He finds the Halflings camp, which has 6 Halfling warriors, and a female Halfling leader…and a Very large creature I later identify as…a T-Rex. We decide to go around, go figure. As we’re traveling down a safe route Crafall found, and arrow lands in front of Hiro. I lookup and see the female and two warriors. Instantly I blow them up. At this point I’m really happy with myself because I disintegrated BOTH warriors in one shot, and charred the leader. No sooner do my flames fade than Crafall warps behind her (invisible + move and grapple) and takes her hostage. She makes a loud call and we hear a loud roar in the distance. At this point we RUN LIKE HELL into the cave.
Now we have a T-rex trying to fit its head inside to grab us. Crafall is all the while holding her hostage. At this point I do a diplomacy check, and with a 22 (I had really good dice rolls all night…) I managed to make her at least cooperate with her. She asks why I blew them up, and I apologize and say we’re traveling monks, and I’m a sorcerer monk and that we attacked because our god teaches us to be extremely paranoid (bluff check rolls…and SUCCESS! Hell I’m wearing leather belts and have a spiked chocker on, I love my bluff checks). We told her to call off the T-rex or we’d kill her. She said that it didn’t matter, since she had an entire camp if something happened to her that would attack us. I, again, bluffed. With yet another successful roll, I convince her we are merely a tenth of the monk troupe we’re in, and that if she calls off the T-rex they wouldn’t kill her people. Now with the T-rex gone I ask her if she can lead us through the crypt. She says no, and after a BARELY successful sense motive I determine she is speaking the truth. I say to Crafall “You know what to do.”

After looting and hiding her corpse, we head deeper into the crypt. We run into a trio of Gricks. After another slaughter (they didn’t hit us once) we decide to rest. Next day we continue on and fight a Manticore. The Cleric crits and gives it a DAMN good (max damage roll) whack across the side of the head, and then is quickly finished off with a sneak attack from Crafall. We continue on, and Hiro steps on a electricity trap. The cleric heals him, and from then on we all rolls lots of search and spot checks.

Next room we enter is filled with traps, and Crafall manages to disable all of them. We then see more at the door, and Crafall fails and takes 5 spears to the face. The cleric heals him, and he successfully disables the other spear trap. In the next hallway, I see an obvious trap, giant falling rock thing, and Crafall disables it. FINALLY at this point we’ve reached the end, and of course a mummy wearing the dragonshard rises from its tomb.

Crafall goes invisible, and steals the necklace from the mummy. The mummy chases after him, but Crafall Shifts into his longstrider form and runs like hell. Once he gets out of range, yup you guessed it BOOM. After a somewhat easy battle, we win and poor Hiro is infected with mummy rot. Kenndel manages to cure him, but Hiro is now mostly comatose. We get more 1337 loot, and head out. We safely make it to the airship, and back to the city. First we sell all out spoils no one wanted, making some good money. We then go to the old guy, dragging Hiro (2000g is 2000g) and after obtaining the money, slaughter him, his two guards (level 2) and the gnome. We then stuff all the valuables we can into my bag of holding and glove of storing (did I mention I had that?) and leave, with Crafall holding unto the dragonshard.

No sooner than we start leaving the building than city guards rush up to us (because they apparently have magical sense murder abilities now) and ask us what happened. At this point, you guessed it (unless you guessed BOOM) I bluffed them. I explained that we had been contracted to obtain the dragonshard, which I have Crafall hold up, and explained it couldn’t have been us because all the valuables were missing. We were, of course, depressed because we were out our money. They believed us, barely, when I said it was probably the Halflings we had to fight, and that it was at least a day since they killed our employer. We then returned to the inn and ended the game, with a bag of stolen items and a town of guards mildly suspicious of us.

All in all we got a FULL level of exp and after selling just the non stolen loot, we made 38,000g, 100+platinum, and 2000 silver. Our DM was SO mad at us; he just did not expect ANYTHING we did that day. Quite an interesting first adventure wouldn’t you say? To bad our DM made us promise not to kill every quest giver from now on…
