| Ulden Throatbane02-17-04, 09:47 AM | I need some suggestions for what to give my Ancestral Relic. Currently, My character is a 5th level human sorc. Eventually, I'm going to get Exalted Arcanist and perhaps even Thaumaturgist prestige class. The Ancestral Relic takes up no magic item slots. The only thing I know for certain is that I'll be giving it restoration 1/day (so I can use sanctified spells more frequently). |
| Ack'noth Necrom02-17-04, 09:19 PM | First off what exactly is your relic? A staff? a suit of leather armor? and what stuff do you have on it right now? If you can afford it, think about giving your relic use activated spells at will (probably of the ones you dont have but want). Itll be expensive but its well worth the cash Since your a sorcerer i would recomend getting Greater aspect of the diety (just for the nice bonuses and immunities), Or a high level summon spell a few times per day. |
| Ulden Throatbane02-17-04, 10:37 PM | It's actually a holy symbol of my deity. Its a wonderous item that takes up no slots. Right now, I don't have much in terms of magic items aside from a cloak of charisma +2 and a wand of magic missile (7th level) (I recently had to start a new character when my last one took 13 points of con damage from a single hit. |

Any chances of changing it to a slotted item? Ya know, enchanting an unslotted item costs more (dont know if was 1 1/2 or 2 times the standard cost). As good as ancestral relic is, at least on earlier lvls you are not allowed to "pump" enough money into it anyway, so my advice is to stay away from anything that increases enchanting costs (yes, cold iron weapons should be off the list as well :D ) |
| Ulden Throatbane02-18-04, 11:39 PM | Very good point, but the Ancestral Relic borrows some of its inspiration for the "Cool Thing" from Megatokyo.com (I don't know which episode its in, but I laughed my ass off when I saw it). I'll look into having it changed. |
| Tantalus91102-22-04, 05:32 PM | Can someone tell me what the ancestor relic is and the stuff about it, it sounds like it might be cool to use and i don't have any access whatso ever to a BoED, the nearest DnD store is like 2 hours away :b: |
| Nightwing_2202-23-04, 05:21 PM | The Ancestral Relic is a Feat that can be taken at third level(?). You can self-enchant this single item, which belonged to your ancestors or a very close friend. At each level your Ancestral Relic can have an enchantment(s) worth a greater amount than the level before. By the Time you reach 15th level, a Weapon relic can have a new +1 enchantment every level. I have a question about this feat however: Do you have to meet the prerequsites for an enchantment? Because, if you do it is a useless feat, cause you may as well take a craft feat. |

That is not true, because: A) Crafting items msut be paid for with Gc, meaning selling excess loot for half price while the AR feat counts them for full market price when you sacrifice them. B) AR does not cost Xp, crafting does. |
| Nightwing_2202-24-04, 01:29 PM | The question remains though: Do you have to meet prerequisites to enchant your Relic? I.e. No fighter class will every be able to enchant anything because they have no spells. No Flame, shock, holy, keen. Not even a +1 enchantment. No Ring or wondrous items can be enchanted without prerequsites. Or does a Relic get enchanted by force of will becoming that which the enchanter wants. |
| BalancedOne02-26-04, 01:22 PM | no spellcasting is required, all you spend is gold and time |
| Kaladin02-27-04, 02:29 AM | I think its obvious but I might as well ask. Does an Ancestral Relic have a value or is it worth 0 to everyone else? Next it counts as a magic item correct? meaning it can't be used with VoP or can it? |
| Ulden Throatbane02-27-04, 02:43 PM | The ancestral relic must be an item of masterwork quality and, as the feat's name suggests, it must have once belonged to a member of your family or to a person to whom you are somehow connected. For my character, the item is a family heirloom that has been passed down for generations. Surprisingly, it doesn't actually say if anyone else can use it or not. |

My current character didn't take it because of a few reasons: - I was raised by Fey, and don't know my parents - I was brought up being taught possessions weren't important - I wasn't sure how this feat would work with Vow of Poverty (Even though I could convince myself that it belongs to my family and not me. I just felt that was a stretch, but I like the idea of the feat.) I think I might use Ancesral Relic for my next character idea though, how well do you think this feat works for an Elven Moonblade game mechanic? |
| CompleteSatori03-02-04, 11:26 PM | Since the item you begin with has to be masterwork, and VoP specifically forbids masterwork items, thats pretty much a no. And if you are going for an Ancestral weapon, you should definately go Anointed Knight from BoED... Its an awesome class, and the Ghaele I am playing in this gestalt game has 10 levels... very cool |

Did you play from level 1, and how is that working for you? |
| necrosnoop11003-03-04, 06:08 PM | It seems clear to me how Ancestral Relic works for weapons and armor, dump in gold/items get pluses and such. But how does it work for non-weapon relics, say for instance a staff. Could you pump in more charges? Or only add more/different abilities? Seems lame if you couldn’t ever improve the relic in what it does. Like if you had a staff of Passage and all you could ever do was add +1 to hit bonuses to it but never improve its travel and mobility abilities. And it’s even worse if you could never add charges “oh yeah that staff that's been in my family for eons ran out of charges but it still has a +2 attack bonus.” Somebody explain this to me. Thanks, Necrosnoop |

Thanks, Necrosnoop The description says that the item can have a maximum value of X, and that you must spend time and money to enchant. Therefore, you could easily recharge the item(as long as the re-charged total value was below your maximum value). You could also have someone else do the recharging. |
| necrosnoop11003-03-04, 08:41 PM | I thought you could not "recharge" in 3rd edition? |
| Kaladin03-03-04, 10:39 PM | Originally posted by necrosnoop110 I thought you could not "recharge" in 3rd edition? You can't really, but I think I get what he means... Because of the way the relic is worded you have to pay the difference between the current cost and the cost of what it will become. So in theory if you had (lets make it easier) a stick that is a wand of Cure Light Wounds (750gp) and you drained 45 charges its value would be lessened to about 75gp. Now you could enchant it to become a wand of Cure Light Wounds again the difference would be 745gp. So it kind of recharges, but you'd have to make it fully charged again. You couldn't for example keep paying 15gp for each charge. This is another way to think of it, lets say you had a +1 Longsword (worth about 2000gp). It then gets disenchanted via Mage’s Disjunction; you could again enchant it to +1 for a cost of 2000gp. |
| Ulden Throatbane03-04-04, 02:32 AM | Also, its possible to improve the weapon as the gp cap goes up. Thus, as you get better, and you have gold to spare, it gets better too. |
