| Azual10-10-05, 07:02 PM | I was thinking. In addition to bonus feats, character concapts, and roleplaying, what makes the famous character int he television shows and movies unique? I decided that one of the big elements is Signature Moves. These moves are integral to the uniqueness of a character and i thought that it would be an interesting system to implement into D&D. Im going to start makignt he hard and crunchy rules to it, and also start playtesting it, but for right now i just want to see how well the concept is recived. The Technique system will be similar to the Ki points system used by the ninja class. Techniques cost points, usually one or two, to play, and usually cost a standard action. Ninja automatically can learn ninja techniques, becuase those techniques use Ki points particularly. For other classes, the taking of a certain feat will give that character the Points neccesary for the techniques and allow him to learn techniques. Also, you can only know a numbe rof techniques equal to your character level. Techniques require a one time payment of exp, which is not miniscule, have skill rank, feat, and level prerequitsite, and a learning time equal to 1 day / 100 XP paid Each is tailored to the tecnique itself. An example technique is something like Replacement Jutsu (yes, im stealing from naruto) You would pay 500 XP (havent gotten the numbers down) you would need to know the ghost step ability of the ninja, and have the dodge feat. For two Ki points, you could switch yourself with an object of equal size within thirty feet as a standard action. For three ki points, this could be done as a swift action. Once you get to the level for the more advanced Ki ability, you only pay two points to to play as a swift action, and one as a standard action. Whaddya think? for a high XP cost, prerequisites, a training time, and the spending of a feat, i need to know if it is balenced. :) |

| Azual10-11-05, 04:49 PM | oh! that is so cool... but what doyu think of the system itself |
| CzarGarrett10-12-05, 09:11 AM | Interesting, but it seems almost too video-gameish. Like <--,<--,A for Scorpion's spear throw. Or too WWE like. |
| Azual10-12-05, 06:20 PM | i would have said too Anime, but i just think it would be kinda cool... still, how else would Rurouni Kenshin know the Hitan Mitsurugi style |
| rkr197010-12-05, 08:06 PM | Couldn't a player just decide to make up a signature move? Just call a power attack a Full Body Thrust!! Or maybe combat reflexes becomes Strik of the Threatened Viper. It's better than some artificial rule to try and get people to be anime heroes. Now for individual flavor, you can't beat a good catch-phrase. I have a Halfling Wiz/Rog with several (many of them borrowed from Dragon). Things like: I’m just a beard and a feeble mind spell away from being a dwarf. I love being surrounded by humans; they provide excellent cover. Half-orcs are like sheep; both should be fleeced often. Gnomes are just like halflings, only less so. I like half elves; they’re only half as dumb as humans and half as annoying as elves. That’s almost dumb enough to be philosophy. It might be dumb, but it’s the plan. That’s almost as meaningful as an elven birthday. Don’t change your mind now; you lack the required equipment. I always try to forgive those who wrong me… usually at their funerals. I’m sad to leave, but at least I have their purses to remember them by. Never join a thieves’ guild: whether to pay your dues is a choice between death and taxes. Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy more targets. Feel free to use them in your game. Just don't use them in mine. My 'fling gets stabby. |
| Azual10-13-05, 06:53 AM | i understand completely what your saying, but there are the truly exotic moves that cant really be feats. Listen, you are probably a creative, dynamic player who does this kind of stuff for fun. Alot of people find it easier (my players!) if they already have a premade signature move to use rather than going to allt he trouble to roleplay. :) |
| Vaalingrade Ashland10-13-05, 11:14 PM | I rename all my spells and feats and make up my own verbal components. It just adds some flare to the character. For Example, My bard, Trace, loves Summon Swarm. So when he casts, it goes like this. "It is said that at the end of days, the sky will be darkened by the wings of many bats! Come forth, Wings of Malice!" |

Listen, you are probably a creative, dynamic player who does this kind of stuff for fun. Alot of people find it easier (my players!) if they already have a premade signature move to use rather than going to allt he trouble to roleplay. :) Actually, making a character a signature move to flesh him out IS role-playing. But honestly, feats are the basis for signature moves. By the time a fighter get to 10th level, he could have a feat set that allows him to tackle enemies in a way that few, if any, other fighters do. IRL, very few martial artists or weapon masters have a "dynamic" signature move. It's considered showboating and that gets you killed in a real fight. The best way to do this signature move you want is to start combining feats that work together or compliment each other and call the combination something new. You can even make the name get fancier as you add feats and improve its power. For example, a fighter who comes from an area where people choose an element to act as a focus might have feats named like this... Whistling Strike - Cleave or Great Cleave Whistling Strike of Doom - Cleave or Great Cleave used with Maximum Power Attack Smiting Gale - Using an Improved Shield Bash with a charge, overrun, or bull rush Tornado Strike - Whirlwind Attack Impeding Wind - Max Combat Expertise while using Dodge These are just some VERY simple ideas to show you what other people are using as signature moves. Noone should ever expect use some Naruto-style attack on a Great Wyrm and hope to do much more than give the dragon a tasty snack. BTW. Yes, I know where you got the ideas. No, I don't think they're a good idea. You'll throw balance out the window with that system. If you really want to have someone with powers like Kagashi, then you are better off making it a prestige class with some HELLA requirements. Or even better... Don't mix D&D and anime. Go get BESM so you can play out these okaku fantasies. |
