I'll just give you an example........

.....in combat with a Tua-Koa, a sword hit has a chance to stick to the enemy. You can avoid this with a reflex save (I believe - sorry, doing this from memory). Now, let's say you fail the save as you kill the kua-toa, and the sword is ripped from your hands. So, the sword is just sitting there stuck.

You need to do a DC 20 STR check to pull it off. Is this DC 20 STR check an action on it's own, or is it included as part the move action to pick up the sword, or does it turn picking up the sword from a move action into a standard action, or does the whole process take a full round action?

Where did you get the whole "weapon sticking" thing? I would rule it a move action to remove the sword.

I'm not sure why the weapons stick to the Kua-Toa's.....I thought it was a racial thing that they produce a sticky substance to hinder attackers that they apply to themselves or their shields. Or..perhaps the DM just added it in.

Irregardless.....the point is really about actions that have other prerequisite checks...and how to handle them.

So...picking up a rock off the floor....would normally be a move action to pick up an item on the floor. But, if (because of weight, glue or whatever) the pick up also requires a DC 20 STR check, is this check "built in" to the move action to pick up the rock, or does it add extra effort, in the form of extending the action to a standard action, full round action etc.

For the most part, the checks are part of the action. It wouldn't make sense to take a move action to pick up a rock, then to make a check to find out you didn't actually pick it up. Likewise, it doesn't make much sense to see if you can pick something up, then pick it up. Usually you would find out if it's too heavy or not while you're picking it up.

I'd make it a standard action to pull free a weapon stuck on kuo-toa adhesive, considering it's a standard action (see MM p. 289) to pull free of a monstrous spider web.

And since you're effectively picking up a weapon, it should provoke an AoO.

No I got it now..don't know what I was thinking.

Go with the "Draw a Weapon" from the PHB's table 8-2...a move action with no AoO. The move action includes the STR check.
