First of all, I'd just like to say that I'm a big fan of the Japanese version of One Piece, (The one without 30 episodes worth of content edited out... silly Fox... always with the doing of things wrong) Anyway, with that tangent taken care of... I've been working on my own system for a "One Piece" d20 system game. I've been working on it for a while, and have a pretty interesting system that allows for all the awesome that is the crazy martial arts and special moves of the TV show and manga. I've used a few pictures from the show, but mostly I'm doing a lot of my own illustrations, (thankfully, I'm an ex-art major and the style of the artist is pretty simple). But... one I finish this, I wonder... What am I gonna do with it? I'm rather unfamiliar with how these things work I'm afraid, so I thought perhaps I could get some guidance here. Am I allowed to share it? Can I put it online for free to fans of the show? Might I even be able to publish it? |

Well, first off, you're using someone else's trademark (Shonen Jump's One Piece). Unless you have permission, technically you cannot post it online. (Posting it online for downloading constitute distribution of material -- doesn't matter if you're offering it for free.) But there seems to be a gray area concerning fansites, so ... it's your call. Secondly, we need to know your source of the rules that you used in designing your own rules system. If you use your Player's Handbook or any of WotC's published print product that contains no Open Gaming License, then you're in shaky water. Actually, you're infringing on WotC's copyright. HOWEVER, if you use the System Reference Document, and you are willing to apply and strictly comply with the Open Gaming License, then you're in safe harbor. |
