With that wide of a content relevance, I chose D&D General. Okay, some friends and I were discussing the differences between Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk. One of us pointed out that we liked one better than the other. Another noted that he plays in both, since he is an avid Spelljammer player, and can visit either world "at will". He plays a cleric. So we asked him what his deity thought of him entering a rival's world, and what the rival thought of a foreigner coming into his world. We also asked if he still gets his spells when in the foreign world. He said that in his campaign, it turns out the deities from across the multi-verse are really the same. They go by different names, but they are the same deities. So when he jumps from one world to the next, it does not matter whether he prays to Mask or to Olidamara. The same god answers to both names. We were intrigued by this idea, and I tried mapping some of the crossovers between Faerun and Greyhawk. Here is what I came up with. (At the bottom). I have a few that seemed to overlap. This would imply that within a single world, a deity answers to more than one name! What would you change? What would you add? What's missing? In addition, there are numerous FR books and stories on how the gods came to be and for example Azuth cannot possibly be Boccob if Mystra is also Boccob, since Azuth is definitely not Mystra according to FR books. Similar things can be said for most other deities, thats not to say you can't have it like that in your campaign, but you have to ignore a lot of stuff thats generally accepted. Especially since there is a connection between FR and Grayhawk, Gruumsh for example came partly to FR to aid his worshippers who had been kidnapped from Grayhawk, and Lloth is basically the same as Lolth. In the time of troubles, Mystra lost her powers and was eventually killed, passing the divine spark to a spellcaster named Midnight who later became a new Mystra, meanwhile Boccob was doing just fine in Grayhawk, you'd have to ignore this. Also, I fail to see why you would connect Tymora, the Goddess of luck, with Heironeus, the God of Valor. |
| Seeker9501-31-04, 10:56 AM | Originally posted by Addi83 In the FR, the pantheon is vastly bigger than the Greyhawk pantheon. You sure about that? I've already identified 71 Greyhawk deities (not counting race-specific deities), while Faiths and Pantheons have 58 deities listed (not counting "monster" deities"). As for Boccob not being able to be Mystra *and* Azuth, that's why I asked for change suggestions. Mystra is clearly the pre-eminent deity of magic in the Realms, as is Boccob on Oerth. So who would make the better Greyhawk parallel for Azuth? I equated Tymora (Good fortune, Skill, and Victory) with Heironeus (Chivalry, Justice, Honor, War, Daring, Valor) because of the Victory - Valor link. What would you suggest as more appropriate? I already admit that some of the matches don't quite fit. I want to make the mapping better. This can be accomplished with your suggestions for change. It cannot be accomplished with just criticism of the choices I have made. |

I'll admit that I'm a lot more knowledgeable in the FR pantheon, you might want to get someone who knows alot about both to help you. But a good match for Heironeus is probably Torm (god of duty, honor, chivalry), or Helm (god of guardians). you could go with Tyr (god of justice), byt he fits better as St. Cuthbert. Then you have the problem of Pelor, who is definitely a good match for both Chauntea(the earthmother), and Lathander(the morninglord). Who are definitely not the same. There is also another big difference, magic in faerun is worked through the Weave, which is controlled by Mystra (in a sense Mystra is the Weave) but I've never heard of a weave in Grayhawk. Azuth is basically a very powerful wizard who became a god of wizards, while Mystra is a Goddess of magic in general (and Azuths superior), then you have Shar(the Void), who fashioned a Shadow Weave through which magic can also be worked, independantly of Mystra. |
