| Thumbtack07-29-05, 03:43 AM | If you don't yet know, I have a D&D satire webcomic located here... http://thunt.comicgenesis.com I'm planning on going colour very soon but I'm having a huge problem with what colour to make my goblins. I really like the idea of going some kind of green like so... Colour Goblin Titlepage (http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/9973/title3zx.jpg) but as every D&D player worth his/her salt knows, "goblins' skin colour ranges from yellow through any shade of orange to a deep red" as the MM says. Now I wouldn't care about it so much except for the fact that in a section where a party is attacked by a bunch of demons, I actually got two seperate emails telling me how those peticular demons wouldn't work together due to alignment differences. So can you imagine the emails I'd get for green goblins?? Sheesh! Ironically, my latest update, which contains almost no actual D&D humour was the one that got me a huge amount of angry (yes angry) emails from non D&D players. I've since discussed this latest strip with some D&D players on another board and they've made me feel alot better (thanks again, people!). Anyways, my question is... What colour do you people think I should make the goblins? And keep in mind, that you have the chance to shape a comic that, for better or for worse, will be around for a long time. Thanks for the input, Thumbtack/Thunt |
| Pfisiar07-29-05, 09:25 AM | Hell, you could have a lot of fun making them pink or some other odd color. Ignore emails about how things "should" be. If this is a satire comic, it has every right to ignore the nitpick rule lawyers and just be as irreverent as possible. |
| Azual07-29-05, 09:53 AM | they should be tie die. :) PHOTOSHOP! |
| Nurgan_the_drunked07-29-05, 10:12 AM | If you think, they should be green, they're green. You might wanna make them a different colour from other monster (say orcs), if you use them, especially if there's a notable clash. One other thing is to have a character comment on the colour in a sideway, but not dwell on it. |
| Ilium07-29-05, 10:35 AM | You could even make a gag out of it with most of them being green (or whatever you decide on) but having the occasional yellow/orange one that used to work for "that Wizard on the Coast". :) Besides, if green goblins are good enough for Rich Burlew (Order of the Stick, which seems to be down right now) they're good enough for me. |
| pres_man07-29-05, 10:36 AM | I like to think that since goblins breed so much that there is a lot of mutations going on. So I have red, orange, yellow, green, black, etc. colors of goblins. Go with what you want, see order of the sticks goblins, they are green and I doubt there is much outcry against that. Though I have to say, with your goblins being green they look more like gremlins (from the movies) to me. ;) but having the occasional yellow/orange one that used to work for "that Wizard on the Coast". Don't you mean "Mages on the Beach"? ;) |
| High Octane07-29-05, 11:03 AM | "Hey you're green!" "Yeah?" "But I heard that goblins are orange..." "Well we didnt get that memo. ROLL INITIATIVE!" |
| Zeigfreid07-29-05, 05:33 PM | Hi Good God your comic rocks! I am very much forced to agree that if it's good enough for Mr. B, then it's good enough for yee. I also agree that some wise cracks about their skin tone (although racist remarks about those damned red skins might not go over so well? Hmm... No one in the world has orange skin, so it's safe to get your hate on about that!) could be included. Also, don't you hate it when there is some massive (but entirely necessary) parenthetical remark in the middle of (an otherwise perfectly legible (if less than interesting)) a sentence, forcing you to go back and reread the whole thing (excluding the remark, of course) in order to get the gist of it? I do. z. |
| Tyler Do'Urden07-29-05, 05:42 PM | Well, what color are humans? Some are beige, some are ebony, and then there's albinos who are actually kinda pink. Goblins and orcs would probably have a range between a sickly yellow and a sickly green. |
| tharivol26607-29-05, 10:15 PM | i say have some be like neon green and others be violet |
| Wookie112007-29-05, 10:31 PM | PURPLE!!! Make them PURPLE!!! sorry. got caught up there for a moment. seriously, make them whatever color you want. "Hey you're green!" "Yeah?" "But I heard that goblins are orange..." "Well we didnt get that memo. ROLL INITIATIVE!" :heehee  |
| Fargren07-29-05, 10:55 PM | Maybe they painted in green just for disguise. After are, they are alrready wearing fake mustaches. |
| Archangel_James07-29-05, 11:10 PM | I think it all depends on what the goblin looks like. For goblins with jagged sides and pointy ears, go red. But your goblins are fluid and round. Go with green. |
| icedrake2002sr07-30-05, 02:11 AM | Ok, I perused the comic, it rocks, keep up the good work. As to the color of your goblins, basic green or yellow is always good. However, since you have many diverse (well, as diverse as goblins can be) characters, why not do different shades of green/yellow in order to identify the specific character? Have the Chief deeper green than, say, Fumbles, who should probably be pale yellow from inbreeding. It's just a thought. |
| Arrowhen07-30-05, 02:33 AM | Make them a different color in every panel. |
| Zeigfreid07-31-05, 03:00 PM | Hi I agree with the above! I agree with the above! Also, good job on the Fiend Folio comment, that was HI-larious. I wonder if it was inspired by some fan-boy complaining that they'd never seen that demon before? z. |
| NinjaE07-31-05, 03:46 PM | Well, you could just say they've got skin conditions or something(Hey, it worked in Penultima!). But if you do decide to make it a running gag, do me a favour and have them meet a Blue. |
| Pfisiar07-31-05, 03:51 PM | Or, perhaps you could have that one rebellious or "that way" goblin who refuses to be like the other goblins. Make him pink or purple or rainbow polka dot. One of the best ways to make good humor is to take a fairly standard situation and turn it upsidedown. :P |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast07-31-05, 05:34 PM | I'll put my vote in for green. While technically (I hate that word...long story) goblins are orange/yellow/read, I think green would look better for the comic. I agree with the idea of making the different goblins different shades though, to help differentiate. I expect Dies Horribly will be pretty pale :) |
| Joni-san07-31-05, 11:11 PM | Make them a different color in every panel. Quoted for Awesome-ness . But seriously, go with what amuses you While I don't have the FF the Demon's comments were hillarious :) |
| Elvintry08-01-05, 01:42 AM | Hmm well I would say...various colors for each...you should have a goblin named for his odd color...like Purple Polka Dotted With Lime green and Hot Pink with Green Ears And One Blue Eye And One Red Eye...or just have one that was not colored...you should make it a point in the comic that the types of demons would not normally work together...oh yeah can I borrow the idea of the mustaches? |
| Luminosity08-01-05, 11:30 AM | So all I have to do to advertise here is pretend I have some kind of problem? |
| Phrennzy08-01-05, 12:25 PM | So all I have to do to advertise here is pretend I have some kind of problem? Do you have a funny web comic to advertise? As far as the colors go - I would do each in a different color, if only to help differentiate them even more. Or go green. I never really thought of the red/yellow/orange goblins. |
| Bruunwald08-01-05, 12:36 PM | You have to ignore that stuff. Don't answer those emails. Ignore those people. Let me tell you, I was in several bands in my younger years, and I still make music now. There was always some hanger-on around, who liked this part of the song, but didn't think it went with this part, and liked this part, but not that, blah, blah, blah. Everyone's a critic and everyone's an expert. I also have a good amount of experience with art and can completely relate in that way, as well. I remember in high school I was into anime and manga (this is just before Akira hit big and people began to realize that things like G-Force and Star Blazers were actually a thing called anime), and not alot of the other kids knew why I was drawing comics with the eyes so big. "Why are the eyes so big?" "The eyes are too big, dude." "Oh, uh... you made the eyes too big. You suck." You just have to roll with it. There's always going to be somebody complaining, and you have to draw the line. As far back as you possibly can. It might make you feel better to know that Rich Berlew, whose Order of the Stick is a real D&D parody comic, and who many on these boards revere, colors his goblins green and his hobgoblins yellow. http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript And anyway, there are plenty of green goblins in literature and popular culture to back up your decision. |
| Tigger06207708-01-05, 12:52 PM | I think you should make them whatever color tickles your fantasy. :) If you like green today, but fuchia tomorrow (leave it to a girl to say that color) then make them that color! Who cares if you change them every day? Maybe they're chameleon goblins or something! As for those who complain, tell 'em to stick it. It's your comic...if they think they can do better, go for it. I agree with the poster who said "everyone thinks they're an expert". That's always going to be true - and you just have to ignore them. No one is forcing them to read your comic - if they don't like it, they don't have to! Looks like there's plenty of people here who will! :) |
| demonpunk08-01-05, 02:13 PM | Green or yellow. Or in between. I love your comics. The names are hilarious. I also really liked the discussion about the poorly locked treasure chest in the middle of the village. |
| Thumbtack08-01-05, 03:30 PM | So all I have to do to advertise here is pretend I have some kind of problem? And suppose, just for a moment, that I really DO want the input of the D&D community on what kinds of colours to use in my comic? The suggestions have been incredibly helpful and have given me dozens of combinations to try in Photoshop. As a result, I'm certain that the colour version of the comic will end up looking much better than if I'd not asked anything. |
| wordserpent08-01-05, 03:43 PM | Make the Goblins of each different tribe a different color. Then give them stupid human prejudices. |
| Luminosity08-02-05, 05:50 AM | And suppose, just for a moment, that I really DO want the input of the D&D community on what kinds of colours to use in my comic? Don't particularly care. I'd just rather not see people advertising their crap here. |
| demonpunk08-02-05, 10:08 AM | Don't particularly care. I'd just rather not see people advertising their crap here. Yeah, heaven forbid someone mention their free D&D webcomic on a free D&D messageboard. The nerve. Again, love the comic. |
| Luminosity08-02-05, 10:34 AM | It's "free" to visit Amazon.com, and they sell D&D products. Should I start a "GET GREAT DEALS ON AMAZON!!!!111" thread? I think not. |
