Animal Companion Level [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-29-05, 11:01 AM If there is a situation where a companion has battled something by itself and won, does it get the XP and nobody else?? Also, does this allow it to level up earlier than the druid or ranger its associated with??

I know in the PHB it says that the companion is the same level as the druid or ranger, but the DMG says that if the druid or ranger goes adventuring outside of the companions home range the companion will probably stay behind and not accompany the character. Does this mean that the companion can get XP away from the character??

09-29-05, 01:40 PM An animal companion neither gains experience or drains experience away from the rest of the party. An animal companion progresses only at the rate provided for by it's master's advancement. Remember that a new animal companion instantly gains the appropriate powers for it's master's level.

It is an animal companion... a class feature. It does not gain levels, skill points, experience points, feats or anything else, except those abilities and advancements explicitly listed in the class description.
