I don't think there are any rules limiting the number of normal animals that a character can have as pets. So, for example, your Ranger could have a Wolf companion, a Light Warhorse, 17 trained War Dogs, and a pet cat.

Regional laws may apply, so if your Ranger lives in California, for example, he is not supposed to have any pet ferrets.
