| LTNuk3m01-20-04, 12:28 PM | Where can I find it other than the BoED? My friend (who happens to be the party's bard IG), seems pretty sure it's in one of the class expansion books. (Sword and Fist or Defending the Faith). Also; what's it do, just in general? (My rogue was recently killed by falling drider web, so I decided to build a monk. VoP seems to fit in quite nicely) |
| Mercurius01-20-04, 12:46 PM | It only appears in BoED. It was not in any prior splat books that I know of, and I do own Defenders of the Faith. More or less, it provides in-game benefits to those who forsake material goods. You get a host of supernatural and extraordinary abilities to compensate you for giving up EVERY piece of equipment aside from a simple weapon and some crappy clothes. You have to donate all your wealth to needy charities (so it doesn't just increase the wealth of the rest of the party). Theoretically, it keeps the character on par with a fully equipped individual, but only provides specific abilities, rather than the variety that a character with access to magic items would have. |
| LTNuk3m01-20-04, 12:49 PM | Hmm. Time to go to the bookstore with a notepad.... |
| paolung01-20-04, 12:54 PM | how about going to the bookstore with some money and buying it? seriously, you'll need quite some time if you're gonna try to 'notepad' it. it's of considerable length. |
| Mercurius01-20-04, 12:55 PM | And kinda illegal. |
| LTNuk3m01-20-04, 12:59 PM | I am not going to pay $35 that I don't have for a book that I'm only going to use one thing out of. That's just stupid. Besides, I don't need EVERYTHING. I just need the prereqs, requirements to keep it, and the benefits. Oh, wait.... |
| Mercurius01-20-04, 01:53 PM | Actually, since it grants bonus exalted feats, you'd pretty much require the entire feats chapter to make it work the way it's built. I'm not going to argue about the legality, though. I know how you feel, but that's why you either don't use the rule, or you get the book for less from some other distributer (assuming you don't want to support your FLGS). I got mine for ~$26 new, so I'd say it shouldn't be too hard to find it cheaper than full cover price. |
| paolung01-20-04, 01:53 PM | i'm not kidding. you're looking at several pages of material here. it's not a simple feat at all, and requires at least one more feat to even qualify. buy the book. don't be cheap. anyhow, you can always check ebay for folks who didnt like it. you already get the core of the game for free (srd), you want the expansion books too? and how do you know what you'll 'use' out of it unless you have thorougly examined it? |
| LTNuk3m01-20-04, 02:04 PM | b/c I pretty much have already (good thing Barnes & Noble doesn't mind people browsing). I know that my monk isn't going to really care for material goods (he's currently wondering what the rest of the party is on, since they want lots and lots of gold, like the unenlightened fools they are.), so that won't have much to do with it, but he's a DM-created species (Fast healin 2, DR 2/-, 1/3 food, air, sleep, water as everyone else, never ages [750 years old, don't look a day over 26], and some other nasty stuff. Mix in a cooking pan, and place in preheated oven @ 450 degrees for 10 minutes. The end result? Nothin' but whup-ass. Basically, I wish to break the monk... at L6 |

I'm a high-school senior with no job. Explain how I can cough up $40 that I don't have. DO NOT SAY "GET A JOB." I've been trying for a while now. |
| paolung01-20-04, 02:18 PM | pawn shop/ebay/sell stuff you DO have that you no longer need. donate plasma, have a garage sale, take up a "too poor to buy my D&D books" collection on the side of the interstate. you may actually make some money :) i know someone who did that and made $80 in two hours! (drivers were amused at his honesty and donated) mow lawns? (though this time of year probably not much help) VoP DOES work quite well with monks, but seriously... there is a fair amount of material devoted to it in the BoED already, and that's not even close to enough (hence the various VoP questions on here). like Mercurius said, you basically need the book to use the feat. no kidding. |
| LTNuk3m01-21-04, 11:01 AM | Well, I've got a crapload of cans in the garage not doing anything... BAKA!! why didn't I think of it before? I can give my non-reloadable brass to the metalworks! |

I'm seriously doubting that you'll have a level 6 monk before about level 10 or higher with those racial advantages. Nothin' but munchkin you mean? |
| Crazy Monkey01-21-04, 04:20 PM | I doubt said race would have a LA higher than 1 or two, unless its got some pretty nice other stuff. Fast healing and the damage reduction are the two valuable things - and they are not worth much more than a level, maybe two. |

Paolung had some good ideas, but I'd just like to point out that you might want to check with the same source that's giving you your internet access... :D Remember, kids - being poor is no excuse for stealing! -- Pauper |

My DM built that race. to make it easier for him to deal with, I had to start out two levels below the standard start point (at L5 instead of L7). Fortunately, he threw in option points. Oh, and I remembered what the other thigs were. +2 to two physical stats and +2 to one mental stat (truly sick in the right person's hands). |

| Antedeus01-22-04, 12:27 PM | Just FYI, folks, the VoP does happen to be in another book: "The Book of Hallowed Might," a S&S expansion by Monte Cook. It's not quite as over-the-top powergamerish as the version found in the BoED, but it's there. |
