| Tyler908-29-05, 07:37 PM | I the players handbook they say to reroll scoresif it is low. My question is how low is "low". My DM asked me to ask people on the boards for what they think (this is to prevent people from saying "ask your DM"). |
| Seeker9508-29-05, 07:39 PM | If the sum of your Ability stat modifies is less than +3, I would say it is too low. The next DM may disagree. |
| Tyler908-29-05, 07:47 PM | so you saying if it is 14-15 it is to low? Um... I think that might be to tough. |
| Nagol08-29-05, 08:10 PM | PAge 8 of the Player's Handbook has your answer under the title "REROLLING". |
| Tyler908-29-05, 08:16 PM | So if I have a 9 I should throw it away? |
| StormCrow4208-29-05, 08:26 PM | Someone just posted the page to look, but since you seem to be unable to open the book and read, the PHB guidelines on rerolling are if you have no ability score above 13, or if the sum of the ability modifiers for ALL 6 of your scores is 0. |
| Tyler Do'Urden08-29-05, 08:26 PM | so you saying if it is 14-15 it is to low? Um... I think that might be to tough. Nonono... if you add up all your ability modifiers, and that number is less than +1, then your abilities are too low. Say you rolled two 13s, an 11, a 10, a 9 and a 6. 13 (+1) 13 (+1) 11 (+0) 10 (+0) 9 (-1) 6 (-2) -------- total modifier -1 This would warrant a reroll. One 9 doesn't mean your stats are too low, it just means you have one crappy stat. |
| Dragonsblood08-29-05, 09:54 PM | I suggest compairing your stats to the rest of the group's. Everyone should start at relatively the same power level IMO. If your stats are in line with the other group members, you should be good to go. The system that I think is the best, is to roll 6 full sets of stats, then choose the one you like the most. This prevents the 1 Superman, 2 Average Joe, 1 Mr Retardo syndrom most of the time, although it does allow for a higher powered campaign. It also makes stats a little less rigid than point buy (though I don't mind point buy either). I really despise the suggested stat rolling methods in the PHB/DMG. I don't have fun playing a character that's noticably weaker than the rest of the party, and I feel guilty having stats higher than everyone else. |

I did open the book up and read it, I just miss read it, I sorry if I offended you. |

Rather, he might have going on the assumption that you did not own a Player's Handbook, and were trying to get the information that is not available in the SRD. There are a few of us on the Boards who have seen too many people try playing without buying the only book you *need* to play. Making the assumption that you did not own a PHB, he was being rather short with you. That is, unfortunately, the danger of making assumptions. |
| anarco_rata08-30-05, 09:37 AM | My DM asked me to ask people on the boards for what they think (this is to prevent people from saying "ask your DM"). Ypur dm needs confidence. And reading the books once again. The only one that can tell you wen or when not rerroll is your DM. If he thinks 17 is to low, then go ahead and rerroll |

| VinylVillichi08-30-05, 07:01 PM | Personally, unless your DM is a real hard nose, I don't see why you couldn't reroll if you want to. It depends on the game dynamic. If you could think the character stats you just rolled with a net modifier of +2 are too low, reroll. Player- "Um, it seems I have rolled a suicidal character. He just hanged himself. I am rolling up someone else." :D But if everyone else in the group is sticking with their mediocre first chance stats...suck it up and keep them. It will avoid bad feelings. The official rule is 0 total modifier, as mentioned above. But the role playing police aren't going to take away your license if you go a different route. |

My DM asked me to ask people on the boards for what they think (this is to prevent people from saying "ask your DM"). I think Tyler Do'Urden is right, but anyway a character is a character and you have to play with the roles you take, but that depends on your DM. Every character got something to say even if its roles are low. of course that high roles are better but while you play with your character you'll find other ways to make it rule... the dices always decide your role... Once I was playing with an Ogre Irda Sorcerer/Bard (and only because my DM let me do it) and I died passing a Portal where i had 5% of things went wrong, and i take a 3%, and let me tell that my Ogre Irda was very, really very good with high rolls - and high modifiers... but s**t happens |
| fukachu08-31-05, 07:14 AM | generally felt if stats aggregate bonus is neg, eg all your modifiers added together str +2 con +2 dex +1 int -3 wis -1 cha -2=-1 aggregate then you should raise a stat. And for my money any mental stat with a -3 or greater modifier is unplayayble. Con and dex may really hurt you at low levels if -3 or greater, but in terms of your characters ability to be a 'character', your mental stats will really define them. Take -3 cha and your pc will have all the appeal of ozzy osbourne at a christian rock concert.....always. A -3 wis scenario for you: spot=fail spot=fail spot=fail, well as big bird said i've looked right, then left, then right again so I guess its okay to cross the road...SCREECCCH SPLAT, I feel like chicken tonight, you get the picture. While -3 int you have no skills, no clue and no personality....... your justin timberlake |
| AcidAngel08-31-05, 08:21 AM | The easiest way around this is to take point buy. Page 169-170 DMG 3.5 Before this thread degenerates into a point buy only gets you cookie cut out PC argument. Remember one thing, people will always surprise you how they use them. I say this because after three years of my players trying for mega epic characters with their rolls, I said that’s it (I had had enough). So after the last Christmas break we got around again, it was point buy only. One of the players said he liked the idea. One of the other players (the mega, mini, maxing, munchkin, powergamer. He is, honest. There is always one isn't there?), was a bit shocked, but he came around. 18 - I use for NPC class NPC’s 22 - I use for core class NPC’s 25 - gets you: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 28 - gets you: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10 32 - gets you: 15, 14, 14, 13, 12, 11 36 - gets you: 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 (I am testing this at the moment. The group wants to go epic.) Note: These are default spreads only P.S. you add racial modifiers in afterwards. that is my :twocents: |
| fukachu08-31-05, 09:05 AM | ACID ANGEL ahh in your signature not to be pedantic but isn't it semantic? Huh suffer the wrath of my Pedantic Paladin Spelling Smite special attack. |
| AcidAngel08-31-05, 09:10 AM | ACID ANGEL ahh in your signature not to be pedantic but isn't it semantic? Huh suffer the wrath of my Pedantic Paladin Spelling Smite special attack. See what I'm talking bout. :D Thanks, will change. By the way do you think you will win the Tri-Nations? |
| fukachu08-31-05, 09:42 AM | Uh my keeping up with current rugby events roll was pretty low, and my Dm wouldn't let me replace it. No I don't think we will win the tri nations; we are too error prone, don't control the play and tempo well enough. Put simply I think we'll get destroyed. But then I've been to all the soccer world cup qualifiers and always ended up raging |
| AcidAngel08-31-05, 09:53 AM | The Boka seem to be on their way to winning, if they keep there heads about them. It could be two years in a row. It was unfortunate losing against New Zealand. Jake White was the best thing to happen to the side. Don't get on to me about Bafana Bafana. They are useless, and we are hosting the World Cup in five years. I hope they can find better players by then. But I digress. Nice to see another southern hemisphere player on the boards. :D |
| Rake08-31-05, 10:04 AM | To get back on topic, I made Point Buy the default to keep everyone equal. My group fought it at first and now they won't do it any other way. I also made max hit points @ 1'st and average rolls @ 2'nd and beyond a rule. |

| fukachu09-03-05, 09:03 PM | Are you suggesting in some way that the worlds of Dnd and sport are not commonly associated, this turns my world upside down........ |
| jukar09-03-05, 10:02 PM | One 9 doesn't mean your stats are too low, it just means you have one crappy stat. Heck, it doesn't even mean that. It means you are just SLIGHTLY below average, and have an entirely reasonable weakness. |
