lukelightning 01-29-04, 09:17 AM	Has anyone here seen that PBS show "Antique Roadshow" where people bring in their junk and get it appraised by experts? Sometimes the stuff is worth a gazillion dollars, sometimes it's junk... Anyways, could you imagine what that would be like in a D&D world? Appraiser: "What did you bring us today?" Guest: "Well, I've got this sword, I picked it up in a shop for 12,000gp. I'm sure it's magical but don't know what it does." A: "Have you ever had it identified?" G: "Nope, but I think it's got an illusion aura." A: "Let me see... what you've got is a Sword of Subtlety. It will make sneak attacks much more powerful, and has a market value of 24,000!" G: "Oh my!" (Note: the guest always says "oh my." Especially if they are an old lady with a $35,000 painting they found in the trash). It's even more fun when the object turns out to be worthless. "I'm sorry to say that your object is not a holy avenger sword. In fact, it's not even magical. And it's not even a sword; it's a cucumber." "Oh my!" And then there are some really big surprises: "That simple gold ring you inherited from your uncle is the One Ring of Power. It's very precious. We wants it! Tricksy hobbitses! Give it back!" "Oh my!"

lukelightning 01-29-04, 04:35 PM	I'd once thought of having a rogue character do this as a scam...set up a great big tent and have appraisers there and rich folks bring their treasures there to get appraised.... and he'd slink around, keeping track of who owns what and figuring out who to steal from later on... "ah, I see Baron Tulster owns quite a nice necklace of sapphires...."
