AIM, if you don't mind not having any maps. It's free, and has a built-in dice rolling engine.

AIM is AOL Instant Messanger. Very useful.

You know that's what I thought it was until the "built-in dice roller" comment. Thanks for the clarity. :D

IRC. Pick up any IRC client (like mIRC (google it, or just IRC)); there are mountains of different reliable networks out there. A simple dice script and online miniatures program later, and you're good to go.

MSN Messenger is just dandy too.

There is a dice rolling plugin for it out there in the web, I found it once, but have since lost it. Also, you can use the built in whiteboard program for the map.

It should work great, of course, I have yet to put together a group to play online.

I've tried Kloogewerks, IRC, Aim, MSN, and fantasy grounds.
All of them worked relatively well for online gaming.

Then I found openRPG, and never looked back.

http://www.openrpg.com

It's a little fiddly at first, and it's not very user friendly, but once you've sorted it out it blows everything else out of the water - and it's free.

Edit: Fixed Link. Honestly, how hard is it just to copy/paste into a web browser?

OpenRPG was ****, is ****, and probably always will be **** judging by the status of OpenRPG 2, which has remained "vaporware" for at least the past year.

I use Fantasy Grounds.
It costs but I like it, and so do my many groups I participate in.

I have heard, but haven't yet tired, a Java app called Game Table that can be downloaded >>HERE<< (http://gametable.galactanet.com/) . It's basically an infinite-sized map (looks like the normal erasable combat map) that can be networked so players across the Internet can see it.

Combine this with a VoIP (Voice Over IP) service such as >>Skype<< (http://www.skype.com/) or >>Ventrilo<< (http://www.ventrilo.com/) so everyone can talk to each other and you're in business. (Skype is free and Ventrilo can be free but also has a paid version.)

Hope that helps.
