| JadawinParr06-01-07, 03:08 AM | I'm trying to find a good hook for the Boccob-worshipping cleric in my party. I was thinking of some plot to eliminate or severely curtail magic in the area, that he would be forced to try to prevent. Are there any races that hate magic enough to try such a thing? Any other suggestions on hooks for this kind of idea? Thanks for sharing  J.P. |

They hated and distrusted magic, and all of them had an inate 80% magic resistence. However, I don't know if they have been re-created in 3.5... and they were also pretty primitive, like Tarzan level... so I don't know if they would work right for what you have in mind. |
| rastlin_of_the_tomes06-01-07, 11:51 AM | in the tome of magic there is a race of people called karsites that are not cabable of magic, and it could be said that they hate very easly. |
| Salla06-01-07, 12:45 PM | Dwarves. Since when? There's a race in the Fiend Folio, the Sarkrith, that hates magic. It also bears nothing that racial stereotypes don't really matter for this ... any individual could hate magic for any logical reason that came up during its past. It wouldn't need to be a race, just an organization (akin to Eberron's Ashbound druids). Heck, make them mostly elves and gnomes. That'll throw the PC off. |
| SlanderPanic06-01-07, 01:10 PM | Dwarves' hatred of arcane magic died with second edition. I forget the name off-hand, but I know there's a monstrous race in one of the Forgotten Realms books (Magic of Faerun, Lost Empires of Faerun, or Races of Faerun, most likely) that is obsessed with destroying the Weave, the source of Faerun's magic. Their method of doing so is through wholesale slaughter of anyone with magical abilities or even the potential to learn magic, either arcane or divine. They sound like exactly what you're looking for. |
| SlanderPanic06-01-07, 01:25 PM | Another thought just occured to me. If you're using psionics in your campaign, the half-giant race would make interesting antagonists. On their world-of-origin, the use of arcane magic can (and, most often, does) have a direct and ruinous effect on the environment, sapping the life force from everything around the user. Upon arriving in your campaign world, it's possible the half-giants were shocked by the open use of arcane magic and, as a knee-jerk reaction, began a crusade to prevent its use in order to prevent Athas' fate from falling upon another world. Unaware that the standard use of arcane magic in your world is akin to the methods used by preservers (wizards who use magic carefully, so as not to defile the world further,) the good-intentioned Athasian refugees present an interesting moral gray area that your group can explore. They may even, inadvertently, open the door to further adventures by introducing the concept of defiling magic to your world. As unscrupulous, power-hungry wizards and sorcerers learn the quick path to power that defiling magic represents, your players could be faced with a huge challenge in trying to stamp out its spread. I'm loving this idea more by the minute. |
| Johnny_Angel06-01-07, 10:12 PM | I can't remember what book it is in, but there's a group of lizard-like people in one of the books that hate magic. |
| Rerecros06-01-07, 10:16 PM | Though not technecally a race, the ashbound of eberron are a magic hating sect mostly made up of humanoid druids, rangers and barbarians. they get some pretty decent feats/PrCs. |
| Malcaor06-01-07, 10:48 PM | You could easily make a faction of humans that absolutely hate magic. Although I do REALLY like SlanderPanic's idea. |
| JadawinParr06-02-07, 10:23 AM | Thanks for all the great ideas! I appreciate the input. |
| Verasana_33106-02-07, 10:58 AM | It's not a race, but I use a presitge class with dwarves and half-orc called Forsaker. I don't know if it survived to the complete books, but it's found in the "Masters of the Wild".:elf: Magic is Evil. Magic tempts. magic peverts. Magic corrupts. Anyone who cannot embrace these truths has no business considering the path of the forsaker. Not only do they hate magic and magic users, but they take great delight in destroying magical items and they gain self healing abliites. They hardest part to being a forsaker is that you must refuse all magic including healing. You also have to make savings throws more often to shrug off unwanted spells put on you. It's a great challenge to play, but you can get very creative. I hope this helped a little.:tiphat: |
| SlanderPanic06-02-07, 05:12 PM | I forget the name off-hand, but I know there's a monstrous race in one of the Forgotten Realms books (Magic of Faerun, Lost Empires of Faerun, or Races of Faerun, most likely) that is obsessed with destroying the Weave. The race in question is the kir-lanan, a gargoyle-like race from Races of Faerun. I was mistaken on their focus. They're bent on destroying the gods and any users of divine magic. They're just fine with using arcane magic. One could easily adapt them to hating magic of all sorts. If you use alternate forms of power (psionics, incarnum, pact magic, etc.) they could use one of those, rather than arcane magic. |
| Mystic Lemur06-02-07, 05:26 PM | While it is true the kir-lanan hate dieties, I think the poster was referring to the Phaerim (or maybe the Sharn, I always get them confused). |
| Yadot06-02-07, 10:11 PM | A race from the Tome of Magic, Karsites, dislike magic and can't use it. |
| The Livewire06-03-07, 11:52 AM | The Ki-Lannan I'd think would hate Incarnum even more. Karsites make good recurring villians, especially if you use ToB or psionics. Or Binders of course. Both have their origins in Faerun. |
| SlanderPanic06-03-07, 01:09 PM | While it is true the kir-lanan hate dieties, I think the poster was referring to the Phaerim. I'm pretty sure I know what SlanderPanic meant to say when I quoted him. I mean, I could be wrong. Obviously, I'm no mind reader. I think I've got a pretty good grasp of what he had in mind, though. |
