Heya peeps, I don't usually post on this side of the boards. :D I have a question though. I just got the D & D basic set and played it with my kids. There isn't really a thriving community where I live. Does anyone know if WotC is going to be releasing any more Basic Adventures? My kids loved it! I thought the Basic Set was pretty well done. My kids are 13, 11, and 6 and had a ball. :D

I don't see anything on the schedule.
But if your kids liked it so much, why not just use regular adventures?
Or better yet, jump them into the "full game", but keep things simple.

That is, unfortunately, easier said than done. I usually don't have the time to set up a full game because of the way my shift work happens. Plus, the ages of my kids is almost preventative from them getting too far into the rules side. 13, 11, and 6. It is much easier for them to pick up a character and start playing rather than rolling up characters. Besides which, I am not a very good DM. :( I played for about 10 years or so but was never interested in the DM side of the house. These are great for me because I don't have to plan as much out. Either that or maybe you could give me some examples of good easy adventures that I could adapt maybe? One that has maps and so forth?

Some simple adventures which requires almost no preparation but lots of improvisation:

Rescue the Princess, someone, usually female, has been kidnapped and must be rescued from monsters or villains.

Find the McGuffin, the Heroes must find some specific thing somewhere dangerous.

Kill'Em All, some place needs some Monster fumigation.

Use your map tiles to set up the Dungeons and if you need more monsters or villains you could buy a couple of Aberrations booster packs which should be on sale next week.

I suggest checking out some low level mods at your game store. Most pre-printed mods come with pre-generated characters or your kids could just keep the characters from the basic game and transport them to the new game. Most low level adventures are pretty easy to run and usually come with everything you need. Also there is Dungeon magazine as well, usually comes with a mix of adventures (low to high level). I'm sorry I can't recommend any low level adventures as I rarely use them, the last pre-printed mod I ran with was "City of the Spider Queen" which is a high level game and the last I played in was "The House on Gryphon Hill" (very, old-school)

Additionally I wouldn’t doubt the understand-ability of the game. I was playing 1ed at 9 and DMing at 12. So don't be afraid to let your kids delve a little deeper into the game and develop their PCs more, if they're interested (although you’re definitely right in keeping your 6 yr old on the simple side for a few more years)

Certainly, a 6 year old couldn't grasp everything in the Player's Handbook. But ... if you don't have time to DM yourself, why not let your 13 year-old DM? If he or she would be interested, grab the PHB, DMG, and MM, and let him or her read up on all the rules, create the adventures, and DM games for you and your other children. You might need to give your 6 year old some help, especially with character creation. But an 11 year old won't have any trouble creating a character.

I started playing when I was 8 and regularly DMing for my friends when I was 10. Most of the games were basically hack & slash dungeon crawls. But we had fun. A 13 year old will be able to DM no problem. There might even be some 13 year old DMs who occasionally post to these boards.

Something to think about...

Well, I'm 13 and I can dm and grasp the rules fairly well other than some of those damned combat rules. I've ran games with my friends and one of there younger brothers who was 5 and it ran ok. We .just assigned him a secondary character, didn't make him roll at all, just tell us what his char wanted to do.

Unfortunately my 13 year old has the least amount of interest in the game. :( She likes playing it and the Mini's game but is the least enthusiastic.

Good on you. I'm 26, and even I can't grasp some of the damned combat rules. ;-P
