I was thinking about starting to play by post but a few things set me back about this style of game play in the past. First it seems DM's are very picky about who they let into their adventure. 30 people could respond but A Dm will only choose 6 of them. So it seems very hard to get into one of those games. Second the games seem to take to long. Not much is accomplished in a week of play. Third many of these games seem to fizzle out or some people end up abandoning the game all together leaving a 6 party group with 2 players at the end. The game may not be playable then.

If I can't find a Dm to select me for a any PbP games then maybe I should become a DM. It seems there is an overabundance of players who are eager to join a game, but not enough DM's. At least from my own obeservation, I don't think I would have a problem finding players to join my game.

The Real Adventures forum seems to do very well, in my opinion. In order to keep things running smoothly, you need to have a handful of players on call to jump in if people drop out, and the DM needs to be willing to push the game when it needs to be pushed. I've found that if you apply to every game that gets run, and spend a good four or five paragraphs on character backstory with all sorts of juicy plot hooks, you'll get picked in most games you'll apply for. Just remember, you're competing when you apply for a game.

You also need to be a good DM. In a market like this, players can afford to be choosy. ;)

Oh, and one thing I've toyed with the idea of but never got around to doing was PBIM. Get all your friends together on an AIM chatroom at a set time each day or week and just run a game that way. And if you (or just some of you) have microphones, you can do IC chatting on the chatroom and OoC vocally.

I'm pretty sure you're asking about people interested in "playing by post", in which case I'd be interested. How often would we be "posting" (or how much time would we have in between posts)?

I play-by-post over on rpol.net

And when the DM and other players post more frequently than of late, it is a lot of fun.

I used to PbP on the Halls of Levistus (http://z8.invisionfree.com/Hallsoflevistus/index.php) and that wasn't an uncommon problem, but there's a small dedicated group there that'll at least be friendly and open.

PbP was a good thing to have in the background, and was great for roleplaying, but combats got weird.

I play in Land of the Mystic Feys. Try the link in my sig, there's some openings! :P

Now about your questions:
1) It depends on the game. In the site where I play, there's a policy to always let 1-2 openings for new players.
2) True. It takes long. A fight against an high armored foe can last a week. PbP games are very different from tabletop or IIRC games. You don't sit in front of your computer for the night to play a PbP. But you can (and must) pop-up every day of the week to make the game moving. When you have time to kill, the best is usually to have a PC in more than one game, so you can follow many stories at once.
3) Also true. We usually attempt to replace missing players one by one, so the game continue. But it happened once that all the player in one game were so new none of them knew what was the whole plot, so that game ended. But it's rare.
