I own all of the "Complete" series (except Complete Mage). Is there any reason to go back and get the 3rd edition class series (Sword and Fist, Defenders of the Faith, Tome and Blood, Song and Silence, and Masters of the Wild)?

Is there anything in these books that is not updated in the 3.5 Complete series? What is in the old books that is not in the new ones? Is there any reason to buy the old ones except for the sake of completeness?

There are some feats that weren't brought over to 3.5.

Knock-down, from Sword & Fist comes to mind.

Oh, I never realized how many 3.0 books there were.

They didn't port Knock Down because it's totally broken.

True. I suspect that will be the case with most of the 3.0 stuff that didn't make it into 3.5.

But there are those who long for the broken, the abusive, and the downright silly.

There are a few PrCs and feats that never got ported, but not many. Frankly, I always thought the Candle Caster from Tome and Blood was really neat, but it's not worth getting a whole book for. Same goes for the Instruments of the Bards, a neat set of magical musical instruments from Song and Silence.

Knock Down (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineAbilitiesFeats.htm#knockDown) is actually in the 3.5 SRD... and more to the point, everything published under 3.0 is still legal and useable... unless it has been reprinted (or your GM rules otherwise).

Candle Caster, Lasher, the entirety of Oriental Adventures, the Manual of the Planes, numerous adventure modules... there is a lot of great 3.0 product out there.

The Exorcism Domain from Defenders of the Faith never got converted to 3.5.

You'll also find that a number of the PrCs that did get converted to 3.5 got nerfed in the process (the Sacred Exorcist comes to mind), so if you want their more powerful versions, you'll want to get those old 3.0 books. Although, for the most part, the nerfs were a good thing.

There are things in those books that did not get converted. However, they're all the balance equivalent of a power drill to the groin, so you're fine with what you have.

Another reson might be money I got my 3.0 DMG off ebay for $0.99+ S&H. :)

Lasher, Master of Chains, and Deepwood Sniper are three very good reasons that come to mind.

I liked a lot of the equipment in song and silence. Also like others said a lot of the classes got nerfed. Thief acrobat went from a class about doing acrobatics and thieving. to a class based on being able to survive falls from great heights. Kind of a pain.

You can usually get those books much cheaper than a 3.5 one. Thus, if you are low on funds and still want a DnD book, 3.0 is a bargain.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I might still pick up these old books if I can find them in good condition at a low price.
