I've used several of them, and I think they are great. My personal favorite campaign starter is The Burning Plague.

I ran an entire campaign using the Free Online Adventures, Cliffhangers, and the AEG mini-adventure series. It went great!

That's how I started my current campaign.

These modules are great if you have no free time but need to come up with something for a session in a hurry.

Most can easily be dropped into existing campaign locations with little effort and usually provide several satisfying gaming sessions.

They're generally pretty good, but pay close attention because a few actually break a rule here and there; the authors aren't always careful. For example, there's one in which an afflicted lycanthrope recruits part of his group by biting them and making them lycanthrope outcasts as well, but as per the Curse of Lycanthropy description, only natural lycanthropes can infect others, and he's definitely not natural.

I looved these adventures. My favorite was called like shipwreck or ships ahoy or something, I soloed it with a rogue and just sniped everyone (Can you say Boom headshot?) It was wicked cool. These adventures are awesome. oh and I Love the Kelzone golem.

I incorporated a handful into a long-running campaign I was DMing a few years back. I took Environmental Impact, Treasure of the Black Veils (just the map), Fallen Angel, and The Alchemist's Eyre and incorporated them all into a series of mini-adventures strung around the main adventure (which was the PCs searching for this missing guy... long story). I added to and tweaked quite a bit of the adventures. I had to adjust the challenge ratings and I added some different bad guys and tied a couple of them into a long running storyline I had going. Here's the basic outline.

[SPOILERS BELOW]

During their search they ran into a small town where they learned about the nearby alchemist's tower. Checking it out, they faced and fought off the wererats. Unfortunately the alchemist was dead already and the PCs moved on. During their travels a planar rip lit up the night sky with light, giving them a clue that something strange was going on. They came upon a small town which had just been attacked by a band of ogres, who kidnapped the young angel that had fallen during the planar rip. The ogres were defeated at their swamp camp, but the ogre magi leader fled to a ruined abbey. It was here that the PCs encountered his employers [this was my tie-in to the main plotline], a group of evil druids who worshipped The Dragon, a powerful elemental god. The PCs overheard the druids vile plan, which included one of the druids, the half elf Drylle, "taking care of" a nearby village that stood in their way. The PCs were then found-out and a pitched battle took place, where the PCs slew the ogre magi and rescued the fallen angel.

However, the PCs now knew that the village mentioned by the druid cult was in danger, and they raced away to the village. After some discussion with the villagers, they decided to scout out the nearby wood, discovering that Drylle was gathering an army of animate plants to assault the village (I removed the thing that killed Drylle in the original adventure). To my surprise, the party decided to stand their ground with the villagers instead of sallying forth, setting up strong defenses and patrols of the village to await the oncoming army. I obliged the party and sent an army of shambling mounds, needlefolk, green warders (a FR monster, I think), and a tendriculous at the village. The ensuing battle was awesome, probably a highlight of the campaign.

Naturally Drylle escaped into the woods, and the party was forced to follow... (leading to the next phase of the campaign, which also involved one of the PCs succumbing to lycanthropy caught at the beginning of the adventure!)

So, bottom line, I've used them as inspiration and enjoyed them, but I think any sort of short adventure needs to be modified to be properly inserted into an ongoing campaign.
