IF you say yes, the burden of proving you are not a munchkin is significant.
That or you play a whole lot and have legitimatly epic PCs

What if I say yes, but that the characters were created at a higher level in the epic ranges, even if there were munchkins who created rather munchkiny characters...would that count???

I have had the Tarrasque defeated within my campaign setting, not in actual game play but as background story on several occations. Sometime it was a set up for a plot I intended far down the line, or just simple history. Petrification was my favorite technique because it left a simple 'Break Enchantment' or 'Stone to Flesh' on a piece of stone that once was the Tarrasque to set it back to regenerating. Usually the majority of the remains of the Tarrasque was guarded in a deep vault under some temple, with spare piece scattered through the setting. For the campaigns I did this backstory there was always a cult of destruction as a main or secondary antagonist. Also I have had it in a gem under the effects of a 'Trap the Soul', in the custody of some evil power threatening to release it. On a single occation I simply had it killed by an avatar of an evil god of death. But my PCs have never had to deal with any potential plot I made because they were pro-active heroes and I mainly worked out the details of the Tarrasque because it makes good stories. I remember once a nieghboring nation had a tarrasque gated in from somewhere else. But that was far away from the PCs they just met refugies.

Yeah, I have! Fighting the tarrasque is all about location and tactics. The party was a human phoenix Shugenja 6/Elemental Savant 10, a gnome Cleric 11/Divine Disciple 5 of Ultiu (sp?), a human Sorcerer 16, a half-human/half-orc/half-eagle (don't ask) Hexblade 16.

We fought the tarrasque inside a huge underground cave complex. The hexblade won initiative and ran out into the complex looking for the tarrasque. The rest of us decided to let the tarrasque come to us. The sorcerer barricaded the exit of the center cave with a triple-strength prismatic wall, and cast stoneskin and improved invisibility on the cleric and another improved invisibility on the shugenja. The tarrasque ate the hexblade, then barged into the prismatic walls. Including SR and regeneration, we stalled the tarrasque for about a minute and dealt it about 100 damage. When it broke into the cavern, we used the 50% miss chance to stall for time while we tried to get through its SR with reach harms, acid admixtured fireballs, and fingers of death. Thanks to the cleric's Spell Penetration and the shugenja's Elemental Penetration, we managed to get it down to negatives, after which the cleric and shugenja coup-de-graced it with touch spells, taking it down to about -50. Finally, the sorcerer read his scroll of wish so it would stay dead.

In conclusion? Mages teh r0xxors. Oh, and never go on the offensive against the tarrasque. It critted the hexblade with its bite and killed her in the first turn; the fighters suffered likewise. But with ressurection spells, their deaths were not in vain.

The tarrasque doesn't exist in the edition I play... so, no. I haven't.

At high levels, beating the Tarrasque isn't so difficult (as long as you know what it takes to kill it, but by then that knowledge should be available to the characters). It has no magic of its own and can't fly. Those are serious weaknesses, fairly easy to exploit. The thing is, it's boring. With the truckload of hp, regeneration, immunities and whatnot the Tarrasque has, it might take forever to reduce it to negative hps, while the party can stay relatively safe all the time. Not much fun. The DM should at least throw in some extra issues for the party to handle (like preventing it from taking out a town, for instance).

Only in a video game. The Tarrasque is the final encounter in the Dark Sun: Wake fo the Ravager game. When I played it a bug popped up part way through that gave my Thri Kreen Ranger something like 25+ attacks per round. I took the Tarrasque out in a single round of combat.

omgg, a wish spell is enough to keep someone dead permanantly? Could someone please clarify this?
the artful dodger

06-17-05, 02:27 PM
omgg, a wish spell is enough to keep someone dead permanantly? There are actually several easier ways to accomplish that (or at least make bringing someone back to life extremely difficult) - turning the character into an undead, for instance.

However, the Tarrasque is a specific case. From the MM entry: "... The tarrasque can be slain only by raising its nonlethal damage total to its full normal hit points +10 (or 868 hit points) and using a wish or miracle spell to keep it dead. ..." This doesn't mean it can't be brought back to life afterwards though, just that it doesn't come back to life again on its own.

Saint Martha defeated the original Tarrasque. In fact you can buy little candles in the Latin foods section of your grocery store (at least in New Jersey) that show her fighting it.

My group defeated it via Dominate Monster.

They then marched it down into the South to fight the BBEG.

The campaign ended, and the last they heard of the Tarrasque was that it almost smiled as it looked at the two Great Shadow Wyrms that the wizard had summoned to fight the BBEG (since the Wizard wasn't around that area when the BBEG fell).

Killing it for good seems hard, but defeating it isn't too bad. It's not very smart, it doesn't fly, it also has no ranged capabilities, save perhaps using big rocks and stuff as improvised weapons.

Big muscle-heads are easy to take care of.

Saint Martha was the sister of Mary and Lazarus of Bethany. When Jesus came to visit, Martha started cooking up a big dinner and complained because Mary was sitting there listening to Jesus teach instead of helping in the kitchen. Jesus said that Mary had made the better choice and that she should be allowed to learn. In the middle ages, Martha was considered the patron saint of working people and housewives, while Mary was the patron of monks and nuns.

In a popular medieval book called The Golden Legend, the various Christian saints travel around Europe having adventures and slaying monsters. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus all go to France, where a monster called the Tarrasque is ravaging the town of Tarascon (which it's named for). Since Martha represents physical action, she fights the beast and defeats it (I don't remember whether she kills it or tames it). I've seen candles in the Latin foods section of the grocery store with a picture of "Santa Marta" fighting a dragon, which I presume is the Tarrasque.

All this sounds way too much trouble.

I just gave it a Headband of Intellect +6, taught it common and then explained why it was a bad idea to go around randomly eating things.
So we struck a deal between the king and Tara (We called it Tara you see) where the king would feed it while it was awake and in return it would protect the nation from enemy invaders.
Currently Tara lives in a cave outside one of the smaller cities on the frontier, where it's studying by mail for a BSc in Astronomy.

Okay, maybe I didn't so much defeat it, but I still got the mad XPs for it.

The king of Tarascon had attacked the Tarasque with knights and catapults to no avail. But Saint Martha found the beast and charmed it with hymns and prayers, and led back the tamed Tarasque to the city. The people, terrified by the monster, attacked it when it drew nigh. The monster offered no resistance and died there. Martha then preached a sermon to the people and converted many of them to Christianity.

That actually sounds really cool. Well, except the Astronomy thing. Tara should go with a Paralegal degree.

One of the current campaigns I am playing in is ending at the end of the summer because most of the group is leaving for college. When the DM asked what we'd like to see in the last secessions I said Armageddon. My friend says Taarrasque and the DM just smiled. I think we'll see one by the edn of the summmer.

Rock on Man LOL good final blow off either way.

Never actually killed it...LOL Chopped it up once but had no wish avalible to the party. That was an awfull campaign.

Then once in a Spelljamming campaign we ran into it, a group of wizards worked together using elven group magic (2E) and teleported it into a star. Might not have killed it but it solved the general problem. (yeah the Party was invlolved, it was actually the dumb fighters idea. "throw'em in sun.. he burn")

Yeah, we beat the big guy. He had the pseudonatural template and we still beat him...

He had been awakened by a worm that walks, our epic BBEG, and had been twisted to get the psedonatural template. So we were wandering around in the desert..and what should come over the dune but, the Tarrasque. We freaked, but then kicked some butt. I was a Radiant Servant of Pelor at the time, and had my 10 lvls of that prestige class. They woudnt have lived without me.

As for Tarrasque attacks, our barb got screwed, because it had that template, it also had about 30 tentacle attacks. Even I winced at that, and the Barbarian LIVED!

It was good...

We beat but didn't kill him.

Hired some dwarves to craft the strongest cable they could. Then we braided that about six times. We drew straws. We lured the sucker out to the edge of a cliff (after stealing an entire herd of cattle to give him some incentive to follow us). The guy who drew the short straw provoked it into charging via missile fire (the rest of us hid in our positions). As it rushed him (and killed the poor schmuck), we stretch the cable taut. Ol' Tarry went over the edge of the cliff... but since we hadn't thought this through too well, so did we. Didn;t let go of the cable in time.

I say we beat him because my Alaghi barbarian survived the experience, and managed to crawl away before it got back up.

But you see...the maximum damage one can take from falling is 120 damage. (20d6 damage is the maximum damage a fall can cause)....about an 9th of the Tarrasque's full hp. In fact, my level 8 character could survive that fall with 22 hp left over...

Our DM usually rules in favor of physics over hit points. He ruled thst the big guylanded almost directly on his chain, rattling his brain pan.

It was really moot, since most of the party died, and I never ran that character again.

It's an epic spell, "Nailed to the Sky".
Out of sight, is out of my way.
I didnt say it would be possible at low levels, but it can be done.
If a tarrasque is in low orbit, will it still hibernate for 200 years, or will it die?
Bane

06-22-05, 07:11 PM
All you need is a few high level warlocks with the Dark Flight and Eldritch Spear invocations. Tarrasque can't reach you, and Eldritch Blasts aren't affected by damage reduction or energy resistance. He'll still regenerate 40 hp a round, but you should be able to keep ahead of that. As soon as he falls, have one of the warlocks UMD a scroll of wish at him.

i played a level 21 wizard who defeated it in 3 rounds i snuck up on it with greater invibility and gated it to the negative energy plane. that is the simplest way to defeat it.
