There are *far* too many spells we've banned strictly because they're too good. Gate, MDJ, Polymorph Any Object, and so on come immediately to mind, and those are just the simple ones.

However, in the spirit of your sig, I can say that I am no longer allowed to suck the villain up using a fireplace bellows. (True story, it happened.) I am now expected to defeat every villain using mundane equipment, but apparently I'm forbidden from using anything less than a lawn mower as a result of this "arms race".

Avasculate has been banned in our game. It's a bit too much for us. Also several psionic powers have been removed since they don't have the same checks that death effects from spells do.

Gate and MDJ are indeed only the tip of the iceberg. What about Shades and Effulgent Epuration? Or Affinity Field?

Something gives me the idea that there's a big 'STOP' sign at 16th level...

I recall Nahall's Reckless Dweomer being forbidden to me after the death of my last wild mage... For some reason, the DM didn't like rolling on the Wild Magic table every single time I cast a spell (since, unable to decide which to memorize, I just filled every single slot with the one that could be anything... five sessions in a row.)

Also several psionic powers have been removed since they don't have the same checks that death effects from spells do.Buh? Psionics-Magic Transparency

Though not explicitly called out in the spell descriptions or magic item descriptions, spells, spell-like abilities, and magic items that could potentially affect psionics do affect psionics.

When the rule about psionics-magic transparency is in effect, it has the following ramifications.

Spell resistance is effective against powers, using the same mechanics. Likewise, power resistance is effective against spells, using the same mechanics as spell resistance. If a creature has one kind of resistance, it is assumed to have the other. (The effects have similar ends despite having been brought about by different means.)

All spells that dispel magic have equal effect against powers of the same level using the same mechanics, and vice versa.

The spell detect magic detects powers, their number, and their strength and location within 3 rounds (though a Psicraft check is necessary to identify the discipline of the psionic aura).

Dead magic areas are also dead psionics areas. This is, I should mention, the *default*. The 'psionics are different' rule is a variant rule.

On top of being succeptible to every single thing that blocks magic, they also tend to be worse. Most are Mind-Affecting, and several have poor DCs or other mitigating defenses (compare Psychic Crush (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/psychicCrush.htm) to Slay Living (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/slayLiving.htm), for example -- both are 5th level).

So, what checks do they not have that spells do? Or were you just not reading the rules?

I did ban the pre-Spell Compendium version of quill blast (rightfully so!). Other than that, it's been a rare thing that I've banned. Our group doesn't tend to play full spellcasters, and even those that do don't usually use questionably balanced spells like polymorph. Likewise, no one has tried anything like synchronicity and affinity field in my games. Myself and the other optimizers in our group are usually of the mindset that, "I could do this.... but wouldn't it just annoy everyone else if I outclass them that much?"

Of course, optimizing yourself in a way that benefits the entire party is fair game. :)

Perhaps when we have some more experience with high-level magic these issues may come up more often. I'm just waiting for it to occur to someone the possibilities of seemingly innocuous spells like minor creation, wall of iron and fabricate, let alone completely broken spells like shapechange, astral projection and gate.

I am no longer allowed to suck the villain up using a fireplace bellows.I remember when you first shared this with us. It was ingenious. And your DM over-reacted.

In my current campaign, I've only had a single spell banned: Displacer Form.
You get Displacement and other goodies, while in the shape of a alien cat, and you can still cast spells as normal? Right. Sure. Not.

No, he didn't, actually. He just wasn't expecting it, and everything we've said since then about it was half-in-jest (the lawnmower prank, for instance).

After using explosive runes hundreds of times over the course of a month (game time) with my 10th-level wizard, my dm won't let me use it anymore.

:(

I know i was spamming it but it isn't THAT strong......

Divine Power- clerics have enough power as it is, no need for them to entirely replace fighters.
Orb of X- banned because it was infeasible.
Entangle- shortened duration and weakened effect.

Personally when I DM I ban Scorching Ray (or make it a 3rd level spell).

But when I play, I'm not allowed to use the Silent Image or Permanent Image spells, I've screwed up way too many chase scenes with them. :P
