I came up with the idea of snowboarding in my game because i am also a snowboarder. I took a couple of skis from a sled and branded them together(weld or whatever it is in dnd. And used leather straps for the bindings. Also for my character(wizard), i bought some goggles.

[/sarcasm] is the appropriate tag.

We all want to insert our personal hobbies into D&D. I had a one-shot bard who had a deathlute.

Not snowboarding, but I've made wind-surfing be a very big thing in one of my homebrew worlds.

No snowboarding (that I know of), but we did encounter something of an abandoned Ski Lodge just recently in our game.

Having no real idea of what it was, we decided it was some sort of wacky way of moving objects up and down the mountain (Ski Lift). We couldn't quite figure what the wooden planks were for, but decided they were for sending containers back down.

We also spent some time looking for a nearby mine to no avail, but did uncover something of a ancient murder mystery in the Lodge itself. Eventually we did figure out that it was a recreational facility, and the purpose of the lift and skies.

It remains a place we wish to further investigate (there is a lingering curse at work as well), and often ponder why in the heck people would build such a place. :behold:

That actually could have some practical applications, especially if your DM uses Frostburn. Heh- Snowboard chase down a mountain... Definitely different.

I'm curious, though- how do you govern that? Perform doesn't quite work... Did you just make up an Athletics (snowboard) skill? That, I think, would be the most logical choice; otherwise, you may be forced to do a Dex check or a combination of Balance and something else.

Why this is a brilliant idea!! Why didn't I think of it before!! If only someone in the medevil ages had thought to create such a wondrous and practical thing!! They had so much free time to play with. Remarkable it never appeared until recently...

I'd say a straight out Balance check for standard everyday use....going into Tumble checks for the more acrobatic and dangerous moves.

Magic could take the place of industry in some D&D worlds, potentially leading to much more leisure time than there was available in real life. Something similar to skiing or snowboarding could also be devised as a method of swift transportation by mountain-dwelling tribes. Besides, there must be some degree of free time to spawn entire teams of adventurers like the PCs.

That said: It's a bloody game. Balshus can include whatever he wants in his game, with or without your approval. If you find the houseruling of snowboarding to be idiotic, then don't read a thread about the houseruling of snowboarding.

@HappyDragon: Yes, I suppose that would work better. It just seems to me that snowboarding would require a set of skills different from simply maintaining balance. Of course, I suppose the skill system is abstract enough to encompass snowboarding into Balance.

Well, there are pros and cons to this. If your character goes snowboarding for no reason, then it slows down the story. BUT if you snowboard down a montien to say, escape an army of orcs or to jump over the bad guys base and then blow-up the villian HQ with a fireball as you're flying over it on the snowboard, then that's really cool and your DM should give you bonus xp for that.

And just for the record, I think a shield would make a better snowboard than skis tied togetter.

Yeah, I had snowboarding in my games before. Granted, it was a Call of Cthulhu game set in modern time, and the snowboarders really just sat around on the train with the PC's jawjacking about who was going to outdo who once they hit the slopes. Not that the PC's were going snowboarding or anything, they were just on a train in New Mexico with some folks who were.

I use a balance check. That and i figured if you can hve ski's in DnD why not snowboards. And come one this is fantasy not medieval... Im sure some gnomes could conjuer up some ideas like this. And my campaign im playing in is mountainous and lots of friggin snow.

I am going to make it a new skill or a perform check now.. I think...

Problem with Perform is that it's Charisma based. While it could be used for a competition, the actual snowboarding would be governed by Strength or Dexterity- thus, my idea for an Athletics skill.

Its not a problem at all, if we are throwing houserules around like candy for this, which you have to do. All you need is a Profession (Snowboarding) Skill and make it Dex based instead of the standard Profession skill. You can use tumble checks for the tricks combined with a Perform (Flare) check for that added nosh that just makes the crowd go wild. Personally, I like this idea, I might toss it around on my homebrew. I have a city of Orcs that live in the snow capped mountains, and are considered the magical and cultural heads of the world. Wouldn't it be a blast to see them flying down the hills with professional snowboarding teams!? Yeah, gotta love fantasy, homebrews, and the ability to do whatever the hell I want with my game.

Wow, this seems to be a growing trend on the boards.

Someone posts an idea that is different or a little wacky, and what happens?

We get these sarcastic trolls that have nothing better to do then discourage the poster. He wants to bring something interesting and different into his game, all power to him.

Posting these lame 'sarcasm' posts does not make you look smart or witty.

You look like a jack ass.

Hey, it could be useful for a quick escape on a snowy mountain top. Grab a tower shield and go! Just make sure it isn't spiked, or you're in trouble as soon as the snow thins out. :D

That never actually happened. Really, not at all. Never ever. I certainly don’t remember it. There's no need to go back and check, just trust me- never happned. Let’s just not speak of it anymore, to be safe.

I'd go with Perform (Athletics) and perhaps give a Synergy bonus for Balance, Jump and Tumble ranks.

As with Perform (Dance) it just (sorta) seems to fit the mode, and Cha needs a few more useful and neat skills anyhow.

Perform (Dance) doesn't have any Synergy bonuses but can benefit from Masterwork instruments, so there may be some consideration there as well so as to not have too many available bonuses. :behold:

Snowboarding is fine. As long as everyone is having fun go with it.

You know, skiing didn't start out as a sport, but as a necessary form of locomotion in snowy hilly climes.

That said, I'd allow skiing in the game. Sounds very interesting and could even make for a James Bond moment or two.

Don't think I'd personally do snowboarding, since that requires that somebody know what a surfboard is first, and I don't think my game is ready for cowabunga.

The closest I've had to snowboarding in a game as a player was a cold-climate culture we encountered who utilized skis as a sort of quick transport for their security patrols.

As far as snowboarding in games I've DM'ed. Once I had a dwarf pc rocketing down a snowy mountain standing (rather awkwardly) on the back of a shield. I worked it into the encounter because of the player-in-question's love of X-games. It was a good lighthearted aside as the dwarf was comically hurtling towards the bottom, slinging insults and obscenities the whole way. Plus the player got a kick out of the nod to his hobby. Think of the scene in Willow and you get the idea.

Whenever I want to put in something modern in my homebrew world, I look to the gnomes.

On of the PCs in a game I DM is a gnome from a country in the mountains. She snowboards whenever she gets the chance.

But isn't snowboarding a modern invention? I mean it takes it root from another modern invention (wheeled skateboards) as well the traditional sledding and skiing.

I'm serious, thank you! Their gonna pee their pants.

Yes, snowboarding is a modern invention. So is equal rights for women. Anyway, as Lao said, when inserting anachronisms, go for the gnomes.

Anyway, the root of snowboarding was actually surfing, which the Hawaiians had for centuries (assuming that that's not an urban legend).

Skateboarding is also an offshoot of surfing.

D&D surf/skate/snow comps would be vicious. Kuo-toans dropping in on waves and eating surfies, winter wolves on the slalom course, and bulette-ridden skate parks with earth elementals posing as bowls.

X-games indeed.
