Hi

Have been searching the forum for a list but have not been able to find what I was looking for, so I was hoping that someone have made a list.

What miniatures do one need if one wanted to have all the monster encounters with correct miniatures?

Thanks

Gerry, the chronicler of all threads Red Hand of Doom may have an answer for you. I used miniatures throughout the entire adventure and made a 3/4 list at some point. It's in here somewhere ...

Scroll about a third of the way down, and you'll see pictures and a write up of the army I've assembled thus far. Further down are discussions of minis that can be used for different parts of the module, such as Stormcaller, and the High Wyrmlord himself.

And speaking of my minis... I just got the main lady herself. That's right! Aspect of Tiamat! Worship.

I've been looking into buying a bunch more minis to have more accurate representations. I've been trying to figure out how to do it w/out going broke. I stumbled across the following:
http://www.trollandtoad.com/images/products/pictures/144820.jpg
at http://www.trollandtoad.com/Clix,-MK-&-Other-Miniatures/2115-1285p4n10.html It's a "DreamBlade" mini which are supposedly at the 40mm scale. If I used it for a Large creature, I assume that shouldn't be a problem. I was thinking that I could use some of these for things like the devils.

Do you guys know of any good sellers?

Some of the minis looks ok :)
I have also been thinking of not trying to use all my money on the adventure, but what don't we do for the players :)

The advantage of the Dreamblade minis is that some of them I've seen at .10 each. Obviously, not all of them, but I'm not a collector, I just want minis to use in my gaming.

I've vaguely thought a few times of asking my players to chip in for some of the minis, but considering that a bunch of them have been DM's for me over the last decade or two at no cost, I feel like it's all equalling out. If I was the only DM, I might think differently especially considering how crazy expensive some of the minis are. Part of my problem was I last bought many miniatures back in the early 80's. In my mind, minis should cost 50 cents at most unless it's really big, and then MAYBE 2 bucks. Warhammer just makes me twitch:D

The problem with the minis back in the 80's was they where not prepainted and that is something I realy realy like since I always end up painting one or two of the miniatures and then have around 200 ugly tin figures.

But I hope I can get a collection that is good enough to support my campaign :)
But I'm a long way yet to begin my campaign since I'm missing all the miniatures and my prepared battlefields :)

Weird! It shows up as a warning that has "been taken without permission" from trollandtoad. You think they'd not mind having their product on display.

Anyhow, there was an article on the wizards board about using dreamblade minis, and how useable they were. I'll edit in the url later. I find that many of them are good for aberrations, outsiders, and chaos beasties. Here's a few of the Common and Uncommon's I've bought (cheap! :) ) that seem useful (click for high detail originals):
http://cfrq.net/albums/Monsters/IMG_1937_Dreamblade_in_DnD.jpg (http://cfrq.net/albums/Monsters/IMG_1937_dreamblade.jpg)
The Nine I've bought because they either looked DnDish, or the article suggested them.

Close up on the non-goblinoids:
- back-row: various aberations or demonic/devilish critters
- Front Row: "Ooze proxy", Celestial something, Gnogre? (gnoll-ogre crossbreed?) aka big-bad brick of a monster

My RED HAND of DOOM additions:
Left-to-Right, Back-Row: "Red Hand" from not-Dreamblade, Ogre or Half-ogre; Bugbear;
Front Row: Snig with Monkey Grip on Large Axe.

I suspect they have some automatic feature that detected a commercial site referencing their picture repeatedly and inserted that black warning image.
Thanks for the pics, it was nice to see their bases on a 1" grid. It verifies what I'd been thinking, that they'd work okay for a Large creature, but guessing from what I see, if you could somehow pop them off the colored base, the black base is larger than a standard medium creature's base. For the things I've been thinking of using them for, devils, demons, and the like, that's not necessarily a problem, they either are Large or I can simply make them Large.

I hadn't realized the grid was there, glad it helped.

And modifying $.10 and $.25 minis is NOT a problem, not here anyway. As you say pop them off the base, and then , if/as necessary, cut the black base with an exacto knife. I picked these ones up because they were NOT expensive rares. Other recommended minis were, but forget that! But when they're that cheap, chopping into them is easy. I've actually modified a few of the commons and uncommons, just so that I could have "unique" figures within a crowd of the same type. I've cut the scythe off of the Commoner mini, he looks perfect for brawling! Or I cut the sword or shield off of a fighter type, and he becomes the unit leader (corporal or sergeant). Kinda warhammer-ish, in that it's the same theme, but a slightly different pose. It's how I made Koth. I cut the weapons off of the uncommon bugbears, and used the one that looked most sorcererish after that.

I can see I'll have to shoot and post photos of all of these.

Also, I picked up a huge hydra this past week. There's a 40mm kids toy collection of Knights, castles, etc from Europe (Pago or some such company name). The hydra is great, though only four headed. I'll stick-tack in 5 more "Fiendish Snakes" and/or "Displacer Snakes" in amongst the heads, and go with that. (I need a nine-headed hydra cause my party is ECL 10). Up until last week, I was going with four copies of the monster manual photo taped onto the four sides of a 3" x 3" transparent box (card collector box, 500 cards), with 9 of the above snakes inside. The theory being as heads get cleaved, I'd remove them..... If I can't convincingly mount the extra heads, I'll just put them to the side for an easy/visible count. And I'll be bringing extra in case more grow back. That all said, I suspect Maximized Fireball is going to make this one short combat.

The same company had a large red half-dragon that, other than color, is PERFECT for Azarr Kul. More photos of him to come as well. He's a tiny bit toyish, and I will seriously consider color-printing the Azarr Kul (and side-kick babes) portrait, and mounting, double sided, onto card-stock, and using that (AS per ?Snakeheadfish?'s ?Caligula's? Asibishi devil things).

More photos as time permits. I've gotta get Vraath Keep ready for tomorrow night.

Them be mine.

Cardstock minis work fine in a pinch but boy, do I wish there was a mini for everything. Found a site with a few links to places to buy plastic bases for those of you with the means to make paper minis. Scroll down to the bottom:

Good, credit where it's due! I've actually got a few of the plastic bases from various board games that my son has trashed over the past decade. Used for exactly the same purpose, there were cardstock characters/pictures whatever that mounted on the plastic bases, and get moved around. I'll be using those to hold up the abishis for sure.

As far as the minis go, I agree. For a while there I thought we were gonna get them all. DDM was pumping out the spawn, and various Red Hand characters. Year of the Dragon had a lot of cross-selling products. Sons of Gruumsh very deliberatly listed a "suggested mini" for each character in the adventure, and I thought for sure that would continue in RHoD. If not in the publication, at least in fact or eventuality. Instead of Kharn or Kul, we got Meepo! (sigh, although I still love the little guy). Ah well, it lets threads like this get air time I guess.

Gerry

ps. Really, I WILL get photos of my minis and or proxies up sometime in the next month. Really. Meanwhile, I'm building a 3-d Vraath Keep. ghs2
