| GreatWyrm06-28-06, 03:50 AM | I'm considering buying some crystal dice (link (http://dicepool.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=106) if you don't know what I'm talking about) just because they feel more fantasy-ish, but I'm not sure if they're really fair, and they honestly look like they might be a bit of a PITA. So..anyone use these and can give me some advice? |
| FloppyLlama06-28-06, 04:09 AM | I bought a set. The more sides they have, the less satisfying the roll (wobbling about, doing other weird things, rolling too far etc...). I mean, they'll give you the numbers fine they just don't roll well. |
| Surgo06-28-06, 04:16 AM | Major PITA, I'd recommend against it. |
| green_yawgmoth06-28-06, 11:38 AM | What does PITA mean? I hate those kinds of dice, myself. They either roll across the table or don't roll at all, and they just feel weird in my hands. I do have some pretty amethyst dice from crystalcaste, which is what I originally thought this thread would be about. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Thelandrach06-28-06, 02:43 PM | What does PITA mean? People for Incarcerating Tasty Animals. Or, Pain In The Ass. Let's see if that gets past the prudery sensors here... I'm of mixed opinions. I have, and like, the 4-siders, because they roll, compared to the pyrimadical variety. A 20-sider, however, has the potential to roll across the table and mow down several miniatures, so no thanks. ETA: I'm just ****** that that didn't get asterisked out... |
| thaylok06-28-06, 03:57 PM | I have a set. I love most of them, however, the d20.... Let me say it Rolls.... and rolls... and rolls... and when it finally quits rolling, you have a difficult time deciding which side is truly up. Then someone opens a door across the house, and it rolls again......... Reminds me of the old D100, which was a ball w/ 100 tiny facets on it. |
| Hochiu06-28-06, 04:03 PM | I have a set of jade dice and a set of obsidian dice that my girlfriend bought me for my birthday last year. I've never used them in a game because they're A) very tiny and B) I'm worried they may break, especially the Jade ones. They're very pretty though, I like them. It's really hit or miss with non-synthetic material. Edit: Rolling my obsidian dice right now, they're all giving me really high numbers. This is good, but they're really oily...I think it's because I specifically asked for them to use when I'm playing a tainted creature. It's kind of creepy. My jade dice are the same way, withuot the whole oily aspect. The problem with the two sets of dice is that they're so small and they're so heavy that I'm afraid I'm just gonna shatter them. Also, the jade dice especially would be good for people who just drop it, as the d20 dropped on 6 five times in a row without really rolling. First Picture: Jade and Obsidian d20s http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/thelettuceman/DICE.jpg Second Picture: Obsidian d20 vs. Synthetic obsidian d20! (size comparison) http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/thelettuceman/DICE2.jpg Pardon the poor picture quality. |
| green_yawgmoth06-28-06, 07:46 PM | Preeety obsidian dice.... *Pets* Erm. <.<;; I have the opal dice, which I love using the %ile dice for. I have rolled below a 50% once with them, and in a game where you only use %ile dice, that's a good thing. :D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Aeolus9106-28-06, 10:18 PM | a Dragon magazine from about 2 years ago had a Purple Otherworld crystal d6 that came with it... i can't remember which one though. Mine had a hole in it... Rawr! :dragon: |
| Deacon Liadon06-28-06, 10:36 PM | I've got five sets but none like those ones. I've used them before at a con once but I didn't like the feel of them. Oh, and *Drools at obsidian and jade dice* |
| Sikyanakotik06-28-06, 11:15 PM | I don't have any dice actually made from crystal, but I do have a few crystal dice. I'm a bit of a dice collector, so I just had to have a few. The d8 is especially nice, but I'll echo the comment about the d20 -- it's mostly just a novelty. I don't have a crystal d4, but it looks a lot nicer to use than the standard tetrahedron. For the record, these are what the OP is refering to. http://www.crystalcaste.com/miva/graphics/00000001/011xxF.gif |
| Hochiu06-29-06, 01:57 AM | Yeah, I realized that after I was browsing again to see if I cold get any more dice more regular size in Jade or other materials. I'm an idiot. I don't like Crystal dice, they just..are weird to me. :P But my comments still stand for anyone interested in getting dice made out of non-standard, non-synthetic materials! |
| Sikyanakotik06-29-06, 02:47 AM | Yeah, I realized that after I was browsing again to see if I cold get any more dice more regular size in Jade or other materials. I'm an idiot. Don't be hard on yourself. To be honest, I'm quite envious that you have those things. I've always loved jade, after all. I don't like Crystal dice, they just..are weird to me. :P Heh, that's not an uncommon reaction. I hardly ever actually use mine, though that's probably mostly because I have so many other regular dice. I'd still love some more of those d4s though. But my comments still stand for anyone interested in getting dice made out of non-standard, non-synthetic materials! Noted. Though to be fair, a set of dice made from precious stones (http://crystalcaste.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CC&Category_Code=DS) would probably make a wonderful gift for a gamer girlfriend. |
| The_Unfan06-29-06, 03:43 AM | I have 2 sets of those. The d4 is nice, but I prefer more standardised dice for the most part. |
| xlivid06-29-06, 04:30 AM | I've got one set (scattered around my room). The higher the dice the further they roll and lower the outcome is. They are nice as party gifts, but worthless for play IMHO. |
| StygianWolf06-29-06, 05:09 AM | I bought a few of them (d6s, d8s, and d10s) several years ago, gave them a few test rolls, and never used them again. It's difficult to get used to their "uniqueness," especially when you're accustomed to tossing around plain old dice. The Dwarven Stones are nice, though. I'll probably end up snagging a set or two at GenCon. |
| DragonDeadite06-29-06, 12:17 PM | I love the D4s and used to steal a buddy's D4 all the time, but he had to move away and I haven't been able to find a single D4 since then (like a month) but I do agree, using the D20 in that set sucks! |
