Hi Folks, Two situations to clear up.

#1

North

######
#...12
#.X3
######

X=Monster with reach of 5ft
1,2,3= PCs, 1 is NorthEast of monster monster, 3 is East of monster, 2 is east of 1
.= empty square
#=wall

on his turn, 2 wants to go through the square that 1 occupies to the empty square to the north of X. This draws an AoO. If the monster chooses to take the AoO while 1 and 2 are stacked, does 2 suffer any penalties. Another player and I thought that 2 would be treated as being flat-footed, but we couldn't find anything that confirmed it. If that is indeed the case, where is the rule stated?

##X####

1 is running directly past X. Since in one case he is entering the square to the north of x from cover, and in the next case he is leaving that square to cover, does X get an AoO? I think he does.

I would think that the monster would not get an AoO, as character 2 had cover in the first square and would count as moving into the threatened area of creature X from the second square, not moving through.

#2

The creature would recieve an AoO when number 1 left the square directly infront of him, though he provokes it as he moves to leave the square so he does not gain the benefits of cover.

PH pg 148 specifically mentions the possibility of suffering an AoO while in an ally's square, so it is certainly possible.

PH pg 151 (post errata) states that soft cover applies to ranged attacks. If you are adjacent then you are not granted soft cover from other creatures.

Thus, a creature attempting to leave another creature's square would provoke AoOs as normal from creatures who threatended that square.

Bumping this to see if anyone else remembers the ruling for this one. The PHB clearly states that the enemy gets an attack of opportunity, since niether character provides cover for one another. The question is whether the characters suffer any additional penalties for being stacked on top of one another. I could swear I remember reading that the character suffereing the AaO is treated as if he were flat-footed, but I can't remember where that came from, and I'm not sure if I even remember that correctly.

There is no general penalty for suffering an AoO while moving through another character's space. The only "penalty" associated with moving through a friendly character's space is the inability to charge.

Two characters attempting to occupy the same space may be treated under the "squeezing" rules, but that is an entirely different situation.

Flat-footed would be a very odd choice of conditions as it affects a lot more than just AC. Besides when you bull rush someone neither of you take any penalties to AC during the AoOs that may affect you. If bull rushing and moving together don't affect AoOs I doubt passing through the same square does.
