The Apostle of Peace requires the Vow of Poverty as a prerequisite... however, in the Armor and Weapon proficiency paragraphs for Apostle of Peace, it says taht they may wear magical items that protect them... but that goes against Vow of Povery!!

Any ideas? Is this a specific exception, and you don't lose out on the Vow effects?

Apostle of Peace is a PrC right? Since the text explicitly says they MAY wear defensive items, and it requires VoP to take, I would say its a special trait of that class, and wearing defensive items does NOT break the vow (using any other magic item does, however).

This came up a few weeks ago if I remember correctly, and there was no consensus. Seen as the mention of them being able to use magic rings for defence came up under proficiencies, and not as some people thought in the flavour text of the class, it really is a class feature. However, it's not described at all and it's quite likely that it's simply a mistake. For instance, if they really intended it to be this way, I'd imagine they would have gone to more effort to clarify what sort of rings you could use, i.e. only those with defensive properties, or some such.

The Vow of Poverty doesn't make sense with an exception like this. I'd rule that it's a mistake.

I have a player who just asked me the same thing. I think this is a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing. The vow or PrC was built before the other factor was finished.

The problem is it is so ill defined that it will open the door to "well, if I can use this item, why can't I use this one?"

Remember also, that once you are an apostle of peace, you don't necessarily have to keep the vow of poverty...

If you break your vow, you immediatly and irrevocable lose the benefit of this feat. You may not take another feat to replace it.

This doesn't say that you lose the feat, just the benefits, so you still have all the requirements of the class.
