okay, search is down and the errata and FAQ's don't cover this, so here is my question.

We know that the VoP disallows magic item use.

We know that the Apostle of Peace requires the VoP

yet, the Apostle of Peace says you can use magical defense pieces, like Bracers of Armor or the like.

Just an error or am I missing something. And please don't turn this into another argument about the Vow of Poverty and the various bits of interpretation. I want to go with the RAW or as close to it without erupting in another discussion.

I believe what it means is that once you get Apostle of Peace, you can give up your vow of poverty and not lose the prestige class abilities and gain the use of magic items. It doesn't - as best as I can figure out - give you a loophole into vow of poverty (or - I would imagine - let you keep your VoP abilities).

yet, that can't be the case since the basis of requirements for prestige classes, is, if you have the requirements you can get the class, if you don't (even if you lose after the fact) and you can't retain.

All very odd.

From what I heard it’s a copy past error. The AoP was supposedly created before the vow of poverty and later those 2 where combined and that little but confusing piece of text was left. I would just rule against it the AoP is pretty powerful as it is.
Not sure if it is true though, but that is what I heard.

I don't understand why this is so hard to understand and, I hope I don't violate CoC by doing this but, sheesh, here goes.

As part of their sared vows, apostles of peace forswear the use of armor, though they may wear magic items that protect them.

I don't understand how hard it is to understand that you STILL have your Vow of Poverty. However, by becoming an Apostle of Peace you have a modified Vow of Poverty in that you can own and wear magical defense items (bracers of armor, etc). However, you still cannot wear armor only items that add AC effects...

Sorry, I didn't mean to flame or anything but, honestly, it's written in black and white.

Well, actually, that is the point. It is written that the apostle can use magical AC devices, it does not say that it modifies the VoP in anyway to allow this use. So, it is an interpretation for the DM, which has been inherently the issue in discussing the VoP thusfar. So, I don't believe it is black and white. In the past, if a bit in one of the books contradicted one of the other bits it shows up in FAQ or Errata, or argued here.

I just wanted to know if it had been actually adjucated somewhere.

And I don't believe you were flaming. Being a trifle simplistic, but not flaming.

you know the saying read between the lines, well dont here, it says what it says, AoP changes the rules around, but does not through them out the door.

Not entirely sure where in these boards I saw it(hits head repeatedly on table for not copying it down) but it was ruled that VoP is truelly a pre-req for AoP, and the "though they may wear magic items that protect them" wasn't supposed to be in the AoP description, and was an error.

Right it looks like from previous threads, including one with a co-author of the BoED, that the AoP shouldn't have had the bit at all about the magical items for defense.

Well, I thank-you for your help. Unfortunately, it shall remain interpretation until the errata comes out. If it does.

Still an interesting class.

While I would normally err on the Player's side, VOP with defensive magic items is too unbalancing.

i wonder if the apostle was meant to have the vow of purity, not poverty. that is how i think they came up with the magic items allowable, but the pascifist cannot wear armor
