10-05-06, 09:27 PM She need not have seen one to acquire one, although your DM may dictate otherwise. As to whether there are any available, that is entirely up to your DM.

Without the books, you're probably not really playing in the Forgotten Realms, so it doesn't matter much what we say. If your DM thinks it is okay, it is okay. If your DM does not think it is okay, it doesn't matter what we say.

10-06-06, 01:57 AM Animal companions are very much up to the DM's choice of "flavor". The DM could decide the 24 hours is you looking for one (although some players would argue that they could take extra time and get one with superior stats).

Conversely, the DM could say you are just asking the forces of nature for a companion to help you fight the good fight, and nature says "Ok, you have proven yourself worthy of the following: an unenhanced super-predator (T-Rex), an enhanced good-predator (Tiger), or a super-enhanced regular predator (Wolf). Which do you choose?" and then you choose and the creature appears to serve you.

All really the DM's call. Which means the DM needs to decide, and decide carefully, because anything the PCs can do, the NPCs can do.

Just me two coppers.

10-06-06, 02:14 AM Well, I've never seen a duckbill platypus in person and they're much harder to believe in than dinosaurs...

Acording to the SRD:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid.htm
Your sister can get a Elasmosaurus (which will promptly die on land) or a Deinonychus (think velociraptor).
In two more levels she can pick up a megaraptor.
