| Archangel_James04-17-07, 08:13 PM | Well it's not always 5%. Arcane spell failure could be one of several numbers, so they just keep them all in % to be consistent. Besides, 5% doesn't mean you have to roll a d%. Anything that gives random chance to at least 1/20 specificity will work, a d20 included. |
| Mister_Sinister04-17-07, 08:54 PM | Plus, there are a million ways to dodge it, so you never have to roll anything! :P But seriously, if simpler dice work better, do so. Simplicity is, after all, best. |

Because it is a generally fixed percentage. Attacks/skills/saves etc are all scaled based on variables, Arcane Spell Failure is fixed without special rules involved (usually from later books). |
| Tempest Stormwind04-18-07, 12:15 AM | I've been working on-again, off-again on a solution where it doesn't actually induce spell failure, but rather applies its check penalty (or a value based on it) as a penalty on the wearer's arcane caster level. Certain classes (like bard, hexblade, and warlock) can ignore the drawbacks for certain kinds of armor as usual. Similarly, metal armor would penalize druid spellcasting in this same way (although I'd probably double the check penalty) instead of cutting them off from it, but they'd still need to "go clean" for a while to atone. It's showing promise, but I haven't exactly been diligent on it. |
