| JH_man09-09-05, 10:43 AM | If so why? What do these books bring to the table? Will soon go on a amazon book shopping spree, so want to know what to get and not :D JH_man |
| DM_Jeff09-09-05, 11:25 AM | I don't think Heroes of Horror is out until October, so I can't help there. On other message boards, I've seen complaints that the editing in Heroes of Battle isn't very good. Well, that's hogwash, it's perfectly fine. My table was rather imporessed with it. Currently it gets grabbed by three players: the cleric and the wizard, both of whom took spells from this book as soon as it came out, and the "aquisiton player" whose job it is to find others neat magic items loves the book. In another game there's at least one player aiming toward a prestige class within (they were really flavorful and well written in my opinion). And as a DM I got lots of inspiration and ideas from reading it. And the kicker? I'm currently not even running a wartime scenerio in either of my campaigns. I hope this helps! -DM Jeff |
| Nyarlathotep09-09-05, 11:32 AM | I don't know about heroes of horror because it isn't out yet. I plan on getting it because my homebrew world is already kind of a horror setting anyway. As for Heroes of Battle, it depends. If you are a DM and would like to add a lot more warfare to your world, then by all means yes. If you are a player, not so much unless your DM is big on warfare since most of the stuff for players is really specialized for a battlefield environment. Though the Dread Commando PrC looks good in a regular game. |
| Bardicstorm09-09-05, 12:12 PM | Personally, I like Heroes of Battle, and because of it will likely buy Heroes of Horror. But, the caveat to that is while it has some good content in it, it is geared to a very specialized form of play. Specifically, if the campaign is not taking place in a war, small or large, then the book will lose much of it's usefullness. And to those DMs who think Heroes of Battle will help them run a war campaign... It will, but not in the, here's rules for mass combat, strategy, maneuvers, etc.. It's pretty strictly geared to running a normal PC campaign in a war environment. |
| JH_man09-09-05, 06:50 PM | Checked out some of the books in the local store, but gonna order them from amazon.com, ALOT cheaper then buy them in local store here in Norway. | prodigyxss09-09-05, 06:54 PM | In my opinion it is a good book full of ideas for a war campaign, but if your looking for mass combat rules look somewhere else. Heroes of Battle doesnt have any and advices special ops type stuff for the adventurers. I would personally go for monte cook's "Cry Havoc" it is better, has great ideas, actual mass combat rules, and hey its by monte cook. Editing in both is good. Dont worry its ok to not buy wizards products. And most third party is better in my opinion. Later |
| Kessalin Talira09-09-05, 07:25 PM | Depending on if you're a player or DM, there are some books on your list that I'd skip. Overall, I'd buy them in this order: Heroes of Battle Monster Manual III Weapons of Legacy Dungeon Master's Guide II Expanded Psionics Handbook Frostburn Sandstorm Fiend Folio Libris Mortis Planar Handbook Map Folio I Map Folio II Stormwrack DM Screen Heroes of Horror Map Folio 3D Those are pretty much in order of enjoyment for me, though I don't have the last two on the list, which is a part of why they rank where they do. Heroes of Battle is a great book, overall, in my opinion. Monster Manual III has some REALLY good monsters in it. Of the 3 climate books, Frostburn is the best of the set, but only barely over Sandstorm. I'm really not too impressed with Stormwrack, but maybe a thorough reading will change that. |

| mvincent09-09-05, 08:25 PM | And I wouldn't waste the money on these: <snip> Map Folio 3-DHuh. Well for me, it was one of the better values I've ever received (I liked it so much I bought a second one in fact). I realize I could've printed them out for free with my computer (like I do with worldworks (http://www.worldworksgames.com/) stuff), but this saved me the hassle, and it was nicely made... for a low cost. So I recommend it before all the others (but ymmv). The planar handbook is my second favorite. |
