How about Waterdeep? What others are available? What's in them that makes them so great (or bad)?

This probably belongs on the FR forums, but besides Waterdeep there's

Shining South
Unnaproachable East
Underdark
Silver Marches

The UE provides info on Thay, Rashemen, etc...
And SS provides info on Luirien, Halruaa, Great Rift, etc...
UD gives you info on the underdark
SM gives info for the Silver Marches and the surrounding area

I have SS, UD and UE but not Waterdeep, and personally I love SS, UD and UE, they're great books assuming your campaign will be in that location.
I've used these two books more than any other FR book I own aside from the Campaign Setting of course.

Basicly in each book there's feats that go with the location, along with equipment and prestige classes pretty much limited to those places.

If your DMing FR these would be the first things I would get. But it's up to you to make the decision for yourself , flip through it, check it out a little then decide. Caus'e it might not be what you're looking for.

Also if you're a player these might also help, but only if your character is from that specific location. It'll especially help with backstory.

The Silver Marches is also a regional sourcebook, although it's one of the older softcover ones. That makes it quite a bit smaller, so you won't get as much coverage out of it, but it does give a decent framework for campaigns in the north.

Curiously, some of the non-regional books actually do give information on mini-regions, such as the Holy Realm in Champions of Valor. You'd still have to detail the places yourself, but they at least give you a basic idea to work.

Actually, Silver Marches was 160 pages. You'll probably get more, seeing as it's both typeset smaller, and contains far less rules than the others in the series.

Silver Marches is the greatest of the FR books, after the FR Campaign Setting itself.
Most of the FR books are quite good. The Players Guide (update to 3.5 basically) has the most errors and overal poorest quality, in my oppinion.
All books contain quite a bit of lore, even the non locale ones, like Races of Faerun and Dragons of Faerun. Lost Empires is also a book I liked a lot.
