I was looking into picking up the appropriate Psionic books for 3.5... and I just want to make sure I'm looking at the right ones... The two I'd want to pick up (for 3.5 psionics) are: Expanded Psionics Handbook Complete Psionic Correct?
Tempest Stormwind 05-15-06, 07:44 PM	Actually, it'd probably be the Expanded Psionics handbook and Hyperconcious. The general consensus on the psi boards is that Complete Psionics was rushed to the extreme, and the average review is 4/10. It even incorporates 'errata' (completely unnecessary ones (Energy Missile), self-contradictory ones (Hostile Empathic Transfer), hyppocritical ones (Astral Construct), you name it), wastes lots of space (reprinted information, duplicate feats), and ignores both established mechanics (Anarchic Initiate) and flavor (Flayerspawn Psychic). Hyperconcious, although third-party, was written by Bruce Cordell, and has been incorporated in countless psionic games with hardly a hitch. (There's a few busted things in it, but *all* of them are obvious.) It's also nearly 100% Open Game. It's a better book in almost every regard. Head over to the Psionics board for more information. Or check some of the frequent links in my sig -- several are psi-related. In particular, the New DM/Player's Guide is a crash-course in psionics, designed for when a DM or player wants to learn enough about the system NOW that they can keep going with their game, without reading the whole book (It's like a For Dummies book in that regard, though. You should still read the real thing.)
Krug_the_smasher 05-15-06, 07:53 PM	Expanded Psionics Handbook The only book you need for psionics. Complete Psionic Correct? An OK book, but from what I have heard, it really really really really is a peice of work. And I dont mean that in a good way.
Amaril 05-16-06, 01:29 PM	Just get the Expanded Psionics Handbook and master the rules in there first. Then peruse any other books you are considering after mastering those rules. Complete Psionic isn't as bad as some would have you beleive, but it's by no means my favorite book either. There are enough parts of it that I like as a DM and that I'd use as a player, too. I don't think it warrants the price tag that it has though.
FnordBear 05-16-06, 04:55 PM	Ok, opinions on the 3 mentioned books Expanded Psionics: Yes, this a minimum must-have. Complete Psionic: This book is not needed however despite it's faults I do recomend it. It is really a mixed back of stuff you may take or leave, however when you really look at it most sourcebooks are that way. This one however I feel is a let-down to many because it was so hyped up before hand. (Again this is just my opinion) Hyperconcious: Basically ditto my comments on Complete Psionic except: I personally found more useful material in this book. The prestige classes are more numerous and applicable to the base psionic classes than the ones in Complete Psi. There is some broken material but as stated it is obviously so. The flavor text is fun and does not (to me) step too far from "vanilla" psionics. Conclusion I truely recomend all three but at minimum you just need Expanded Psionics (or a copy of the psionics SRD if you dont mind no art or flavor text) Just my two CP.
