how many of you play in your dm's mom's basement, poorly lit and filled with fantasy memorabilia?

did anyone even do this back at the start?

how do you all play? where, how many players in your party, and how often do you meet?

and also, just for my own research, how many of you have a nearbye game store?

as for me, i sadly do not play in my mom's basement when i run the campaign for my players. we live near san francisco, and no one i know even owns a basement. you can be sure that i would if i could. or even cooler, an upstairs attic. maybe even the kind you have to pull down a ladder to get into. that would be cool.

i play in my family room, which is on the opposite side of the living room, so we don't disturb my family. there are four, soon to be five players in my party, and we meet once every other week.

i have a local gamestore named gamescape.

I am the DM "Masterminator" of my current main party. When we play at my home, we always do so at the basement. Sometimes we play at other homes, but not in their basements (one is in a strange, tower-looking fourth floor and in the other in a playroom located in the garden).

I am not very sure what do you mean by how do we play. When we play, we usually do for times between 4 and 8 hours, usually with at least one break for food (non-alcoholic beberages and concoctions of various types are ingested during the whole session). The players really get into their characters, and metagaming is practically none (which makes me very happy). Still, I like to make more relaxed sessions once in a while, depending on the current state of the campaign. Too keep morale high, it is good to have a bit of everything, in my opinion.

There are currently 6 players in the party, plus I (the DM). At first I thought it would be too many people (I was used to groups of 4), but we have been playing for almost 10 months already and everything has gone better than ever before (I would say that this has been one of the best groups I ever had the pleasure to play with).
How often we meet varies, but we try to do so at least two times per month. However, we have been able to coordinate well enough and meet once per week during the last two months, and we hope to keep this way from now on.

About nearby gaming stores, yes, I have several nearby ones. There is a gaming mall not more than two miles away from here that has about 20 or 21 stores dedicated to roleplaying games, so there is never a shortage of material.

umm...i neither have a basement that i could use for gaming...
i'm making my sessions in my room at the attic, but we sometimes play at a players house.

I don't have any gamestore near me .. i'm ordering most of the books per internet :(

i once organized a part of a campaign on a graveyard no one ever forgot this session (it was the best one ) .

I run my campaign in another guy's basement (which feels a little weird - the space heater, the cigarette smoke, even the Swedish Fish are all normal - but there's just something about DMing in someone else's house that seems to break some taboo). We are eight, pretty evenly divided between oldschool (I first played in 1986, aged six) and relative newbies (three players have only played with this current group, so whenever we switch game systems, they've all gotta learn all the rules).

We meet once a week, alternating between EarthDawn and D&D. We meet for between eight and ten hours, wasting at least three along the way. We used to meet in a gameshop, but when they started charging $3 per head ($21 or $24, depending on the week) we decided someone's house would be better.

I'm not sure if an attic would be cooler. A smoky basement with concrete walls seems to be the right ambience.

Where I grew up, we don't have a basement. We try to play whatever space is allowed: living rooms, kitchens, picnic tables, even FLGS.

One of my campaigns played in the youth center of a church (it was in the basement).

Started on Mom's dining room table.

At college, it was at the student union or at someone's apartment that had a decent table.

Now, it is at my table (8' x 3' dining room table) with a dragon poster on the wall and my "oversize" lead on a display shelf. In the corner are my 2 large drawer units for storing mins and a 2 drawer filing cabinet for books and adventures.

We usually play outdoors in the sunshine, 'cause we play at lunch break.
No one I know has a basement, but I do have an FLGS - they're really a cybercafe, but they stock some d20 stuff. I've only made a couple purchases there, though.
