we are trying something new, playing against each other (one character vs one character) with no DM, in a roman style arena / colliseum. each player gets X gp & can create an x level character.

this seemed like a good idea until a simple thing like flying basically "won" the combat when the opoonent couldnt reach the flyer, who has a ranged weapon, like a game ending /game stalling combo in a card game (good for the winner bad for the guy who spends a lot of time making a character to basically lose in the first round)

2 hours making a character for a game that lasts 1 minute = not good

other potential abuses like hold person or phase / plane shift (is that right) mat also just make the whole affair seem pointless.

we thought of maybe 2 vs 2 but i think the "game ending combos" may be even more "broken"

has anyone else tried this and did it work or are we wasting our time.

we tried 6th level characters at first but are looking to go higher with more base gp but this may exponentially increaase the inherant flaes.

thanks

It works just fine, since there is no storyline or NPC.

I tried that once, it's the only time I've ever seen a level 3 cleric take down a level 4 Lizardfolk barbarian. Hold person, 3+ rounds of coup de gras, 'nuff said.
