sigh

so many gains forsaken. so many old posters forgotten :(

Arturick was a sarcastic so en so, who invented the Shovel awards here on the WotC forums, the imfamous Wham! dig, dig, dig! phrase

He had a few chronicles up with tales from his gaming table, and i'm hoping one of the veteran posters who still remembers him has a link for them

Note that this isn't the copy chonjurer had on his site that you're probably thinking of. Its a link to a thread posted by Arty on the Nifty Messageboard.

For all of Artrurick's sarcastic qualities, however, I'd like to point out that he was more of an opinionated storyteller and not so much a troll. "Sarcastic" doesn't always mean mean-spirited toward other board members.

His "Chronicles" were his self-written and slightly biased narratives of his tabletop gaming experiences. They almost always focused on the errors of the DMs and/or other players he gamed with.

There was also the shovel. For more information, see *WHAM* *dig, dig, dig* at Trollbill's Dictionary of Terms (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46916)

Edit: Wow - I completely missed that someone got a link to the chronicles up. I'll have to read those now, instead of doing something useful.

Honestly, i never considered him a troll at all.

I just don't want anyone who didn't see him on these boards to get the wrong idea about the term "sarcastic." Some of it for Arturick's legacy. Most of it is so that people don't get the idea that shooting off at the mouth is what we remember people for.

Arturick was a storyteller, and a good one.

Just let the guy fade from memory, before his lap-dogs appear and start singing his praises. I never found him all that insightful, or much of a story-teller, anyway.

Expand this about a 100000 times and you got a very good reason for him to leave...

Who's Arturik?

I would tell you, but the CoC prevents me from using such language. And the very thought of his hootchie groupies is enough to make one vomit.

OK, guys, play nice. It's not the guy's fault the boards turned out the way it did during those times, and it's probably for the best that he left, seeing as his obvious charisma generated more than necessary turbulence on the boards. For my part, I can understand that he might have been disappointed in how everybody behaved regarding him and the cliques he unthinkingly formed, including the behavior of said cliques.

I don't think he would've left on so sad a note otherwise.

He was a passable enough poster, though rarely very informative, he was mildly interesting and usually had readable posts. The worse thing he did was unintentionally inspire a group of people to post such a lot of similarly uninformative and peripherally D&D related posts that at one time they could have been considered spam.

I'm thankful he kept above such things for the most part, and that he left after realizing the effect he had on the board community. For those who are interested, I think he still visits the Nifty boards every now and again. Those boards are not officially monitored by the WizOs, with both positive and negative effects from such absence. Much less crunch, overall, though, and the fluff is largely suited to a certain kind of taste.

Hey, don't dis Arturick.

I'm not one of his groupies. In fact, there's not a whole lot we agree on at all.

However, I have read a chronicle of his campaign, written by Medesha, who is the solo player in that particular campaign, and let me tell you, his writing style is a thing of beauty, when he doesn't let his personality get in the way. :smirk: (Note: That was a friendly jab, not an attack.)

For the record, he left because of constant harassment by people who were just irritated at his fan club, which I'm pretty sure he neither asked for nor appreciated, as I know the guy fairly well, at least, I'd like to think so.

In fact, some of the attitudes displayed on this thread is why an awful lot of people left this board, for the record. If you don't like someone, fine, there's a whole lot of people I don't like. But I don't go off everytime I hear someone mention them, I'm far too mature for that.

And when Arioch is too mature for something, that's speaks volumes. (Yes, I am aware of my reputation, don't bother pointing it out.)

This board was the first one i ever posted on. Everything i learnt about posting, i learnt watching Arturick, Jenny and Koga post

even if i never told them.

I have no idea what the three of them think of me, but like any decent person, i'm not going to diss the folks from who i learnt.

seeing as his obvious charisma

It is sad when that sort of attitude gets refered to as charisma. Let's just say we have a different definition of the term then.

Arturick made me laugh. His writing style was easy to read, and you could identify with some of the problem players he dealt with. I respect the guy, but I am definitely not a groupie. He helped develop the community here.:tiphat:

Silverthrone, there were times when the CoC was the only thing keeping me from making quite a few statements about you. But I still respect you.:twitch:

Arturick, like Gygax, is like a katana.

He had some degree of spiffiness (though I never figured out what it was -- I prefer arcanaloths), which some people got too in to, which caused people to roll their eyes and hurl them at the Shoveler, ironically just causing his fans to become more devoted, and exaggerating him all the more.

Exactly like with katanas.

Spiffy keen and all that, but hardly perfect.

And the two sides will never let the other simply keep their feelings as is.

The Count: However, I have read a chronicle of his campaign, written by Medesha, who is the solo player in that particular campaign, and let me tell you, his writing style is a thing of beauty, when he doesn't let his personality get in the way.

Truer words were never spoken.

I've known Arturick as a true and personal friend for two years now. It never ceases to amuse me how his detractors on message boards always think they know him so well that they're qualified to sneer at him.

Anyone capable of arousing so much discussion about their personality, skills, etc... long after they have left a place is a clear indication that the person in question was charismatic. Charisma is not just a smile and friendly attitude. ;)

That's quite true.

If someone inspires any emotion in you, that means they have high charisma, according to D&D rules.

That means if you're inspired, enraged, irritated, firghtened or any sort of emotion, then that indicates high charisma.

So, the fact that Silverthrone hates Arturick so much that he insists upon displays in a public forum, where he knows he can't be opposed by anyone, indicates Arturick has high charisma.

Quick question there, Silver: Why won't you post any of this stuff on Nifty? I know for a fact you'fve been there. Why not bring your grudges to him where he can see it, instead of sneaking around where he doesn't post? Because that's what you're doing: Sneaking around, spreading rumors behind his back.

<I wonder why a mod hasn't closed this yet, on account that there's a lot of flagrant CoC violations in this thread.>

Sheesh, now I'm sorry I didn't PM the link to Godeskin.

This thread has served its purpose, now everyone bail out before a WizO has to send nasty emails.

Arturick wasn't one of my favorite people. We had two things you could call run-ins --- in retrospect, I think he behaved poorly once and I behaved poorly once. So AFAIC that makes him an ordinary human being.

The first of the two run-ins WAS sort of inspired by my distaste for the shovel imagery. I sort of bit his head off, and apologized shortly thereafter. He had made up his mind to complain about me, then (I think) decided not to after reading my apology, which was nice of him I guess. Our second encounter was a lot more bitter, and I feel it would be counterproductive to describe it in detail.

I'm modest enough to doubt that he remembers me, or cares much what I think of him. I'm also mature enough to see that it doesn't make him a bad guy just because he and I didn't hit it off.

I never wanted to throw him down a flight of stairs or anything like that. I am honestly happy to hear that so many people had positive experiences with him. (He DID, undoubtedly, have "charisma".)

Believe it or not, this wasn't the first time I had difficulty getting along with a decent person. Hey, it happens.

What? D&D charisma is a direct representation of physical beauty, right? :smirk:

On topic: I never saw arturick post here, but he sure left a wake, judging from this thread...

arturick post a few things.
basically write ups of game sessions which show the problems he had dealing with bad gamers, bad dms, and bad people.
He also came up with the shovel awards. Which you listed things which ticked you off as a gamer which made you want to commit murder.
Ex.
I am the Dm.
Dm. Ok that it for tonight. Next session which do you want to explore. Rescue Billy's sister from the wedding to noble, check out the gold rush in happy valley, check out the lock door under the wizards tower.
Players. Billy's sister.
Next week.
Dm. Ok Billy mom arrives on the noon stagecoach. She enters the inn.
Player 1, I drink my beer and turn my back to her.
Player 2. I slip out and steal her luggage
Player 3 (billy) "Mom what are you doing here. You didn't send me a birthday present."
I draw my sword and attack.
Dm blink blink.

Which was followed by Jasper pulling out the golden shovel. Wham wham wham
Dig dig dig.

Now I did not always agree with what he posted or his arguements to support his postition but he did cause me to have flashbacks to some bad game sessions.

Okay, those were pretty damn funny. I love Tales of Bad Gaming. I do recall this cat, but I think I missed his heyday.

The thread has served its purpose. Usually the WizOs don't like guests as the subject of the thread since it usually acts as a lightning rod for popularity/unpopularity. Also, its not helping that the guest doesn't post regularly on the boards any longer so I really don't want to leave it up long enough for someone to drag it through the mud. So, on that note, ...
