I always like assassins who are invisible, with True Strike and poisoned arrows. I favor Purple Worm poison. Of course, this may be inappropriate for your group. What level are your PCs?

Give us some more info. We need to know their levels, how well they're built, and how good of players they are.

Almost all of the characters I play have at least some sort of rogue aspect to them, so I'd love to help.

Well im playing AD&D...Well, that's going to limit things. I'll have to go gather up my old books, re-read them, and figure out what to do if you need edition-specific advice.

If you're just looking for story-based information, then advice will be much easier. But then, if you're looking for story-based tips, then you'll need to give us more than just the game system and a couple minor facts about the characters.

What's the world like? The town?

Is assassination a normal thing? If so, how does the population deal with that kind of nagging threat? If not, then someone (other than the characters) is going to take notice, especially if it's not flawlessly executed.

Have the characters done something to someone to "deserve" being hunted in this way? What was it? Who is sending the assassins and why?

What I would recommend is a slow buildup where the PCs build a friendship with their would be killers.

If that is not possible then the whole "pick the locks, move in quietly and kill them" route could work.

If they're sent just to kill them, then why bother making friendships with the PCs?

Here's my standard assassin attack, assuming that the PCs are in a somewhat public resting place (such as an Inn):

Have the assassins find out through various social skills which rooms the PCs are staying in. Find a way to get in there before the PCs do, without notice. Their tactics from here on can go different ways depending on how much time alone they had in the room before the PCs show up.

Plenty of time (30 minutes+) gives the assassin the opportunity to actually carve some of the bed out so he can hide inside it without making a big bump. When the PC inhabiting that room decides to lay down and sleep for the night, he finds that the bed isn't as safe as it used to be.

A bit of time (approx. 10 minutes) gives the assasin somewhat of a time limit, so he'll probably just look for the best hiding place in the room, most likely an armoire or something of that type... a closet, if nothing else is handy.

Almost no time (< 5 minutes) means that he's forced to work quickly, which will probably result in something simple like hiding under the bed.

Either way, the PCs wind up somewhat lacking in the defence department. The only real difference is the varying degrees of just how easy it is for the assassins.

Make them female..and attractive...and interested in the PCs. When they are "vulnerable" go in for the kill.
