| weasel fierce04-19-05, 09:24 PM | For those that play campaigns, rather than one-shots, at what levels do you generally end the campaign or start over ? Over the years, anywhere from 8-15 have generally seemed the cut-off point in our games, with later years seeing lower levels. |
| Elven Doritos04-19-05, 09:27 PM | My last long-term campaign I ended at 20th level. Although I'm interested in epic gaming, it was an excellent place to stop. As always, The Elven Doritos |
| 11d704-19-05, 09:28 PM | Whenever the PCs character are done with their goals and dont want to do anything else. This is usually between 16-20 sessions, thats around 3 months. They can be any level depending on what level we start at, however the DM just has us level up when it would fit the story, so level has little to do with it. |
| Darkmeer04-19-05, 10:08 PM | Our games typically end at levels 18-27. Depending on inspiration and the campaign, we could go higher, but haven't had a reason to yet (NO one wants to be a god). And, depending on the campaign, we could go as far as 4 years real world time with the same campaign. :twocents: |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-19-05, 10:09 PM | Once the overall metaplot has run its course and the PCs have reached a suitable in game stopping point. Last campaign that was around 26th level or so and about 3 years ooc game time. |
| Charisto04-19-05, 10:10 PM | what has happened with us is weve been using the same characters for 3 years they are now all about 12-15... but sometimes whenever a player becomes bored of a character he/she will retire it and create a new one we have a group of 7 and two of us still have our original characters, a level 15 fighter, and a level 15 wizard. |
| Big Tom04-20-05, 12:51 AM | I find it usually just gets to be that time when both the Dm and the players seem to make an unspoken agreement that its time to stop. It depends entirely on what level the campaign started at, usually I see 10 to 12 levels pass before that time. I've never actually gone all the way from 2 to 20, (we usually start at level 2, it makes the characters a little better defined). |
| Ogre Mage04-20-05, 12:57 AM | Assuming we started at Level 1 or 2, I like to end the game at 12-15. Unfortunately, the game usually ends around 5-6. :tantrum: |
| Another Gnome04-20-05, 01:03 AM | Usually before level 10, but we go down fighting. :fight!: |
| Draco Strang04-20-05, 01:37 AM | Depends on how smart the players are. Every campaign I run (that isn't a specific one-shot) I pen a few notes regarding what should happen when they approach high levels. Whether they make it there or not is entirely up to them. |
| Kalanth04-20-05, 02:13 AM | The longest I ran, which lasted 2 years RL time, the characters were lvls 12 - 15 respectively. I try to end things when the campaigns overall story has run its course. Sometimes the players want to pick up the old characters and play them once more, and that can add a few more levels, but I would say the average stopping point is 12th lvl. I have yet to see 20th lvl as a DM, but as a player I was in a 2nd ed game up to 23rd lvl. |
| Eliza_Stormwhisper04-20-05, 03:38 AM | The highest-level character I ever played (where I actually earned all of her levels, right from 1st), was a 18th-level human mage. She got sent out of the campaign because she tried to blatantly abuse a wish spell, which got her sent to the lower planes (poor girl). The campaign had lasted seven months real time and 26 years game time. I introduced a 12-level half-elf fighter to the group who got up to 14 over the course of the next month, and then we got TPKed. The highest-level character was a 25th-level cleric, run by my boyfriend at the time. |
| Jonathan Strange04-20-05, 05:19 AM | Been 3 years. I'm DMIng these guys into 20th and look forward to Epic Level Play. |
| q'afuu04-20-05, 05:41 AM | We start at level 1 (sometimes, when I feel like allowing LA races without forcing my players to go through a number of monster class levels, that might be increased to level 4 or so) and we end between levels 18 and 20, when the ongoing campaign comes to an end. No epic play. |
| Nyferto04-20-05, 06:38 AM | Usually start at level 1 - ends when everyone dies or the plot is over. |
| Gnorish04-20-05, 07:53 AM | The end level is not as important as plot or player enjoyment. If the players get bored then try a side adventure with different characters then return to the campaign. |
| Seeker9504-20-05, 08:50 AM | My current campaign has three months left. At that time, the party will reach 20th level, likely learn the true nature of the BBEG (an NPC they are only now beginning to suspect is something other than what he claims to be), and engage in the "final battle". I have no interest in an Epic game, although a continuation of pre-epic rules into levels beyond 20 is fine. |
| CzarGarrett04-20-05, 09:09 AM | As a Player, I've run characters up to the mid teens (starting from level 1 or 2) before ending a campaign. As a DM, I've run games up to the mid twenties before ending the campaign, having the characters retire of sorts, then modifying the game world to reflect the actions of the previous PCs. |
| P33KAJ3W04-20-05, 02:30 PM | I plan on running them up to 76 and then killing them or making them gods. I think killing them sounds more fun... meh |
| Swiss61904-21-05, 02:52 AM | My last campaign took them to 15th level, but my current campaign should take them to 18th or 19th. I have no intention of running an epic game. |
| e-z0r04-21-05, 04:30 AM | If our players are below level five, with luck they'll end up at starting level +1. If they are over level five when starting, they'll be on the same level when the campaign ends. We don't _HAVE_ campaigns. |
| Dyrtt04-21-05, 04:42 AM | I've always had more fun at the pre-10 levels. ya, We aren't nearly as powerful, but it's the challenge that makes it more compelling. There is something to be said about being godlike though. |
